Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan

READINESS:
I. GOALS: Students will be able to solve simple word problems on their own and in groups

B. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the lesson, students should be able to solve simple word
problems using pictures, symbols, or numbers to illustrate their understanding of the word
problem

C. STANDARDS:
ISTE: Global Collaborator: use collaborative technologies to work with others, including
peers, experts, or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple
viewpoints
IAS: 1.CA.2: Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction within 20 in
situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with
unknowns in all parts of the addition or subtraction problem (e.g., by using objects,
drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the
problem)
II. HOME BASED STUDY DAY 1
Students will watch the video that introduces simple word problems. Teacher gives
instructions on how to access the assigned video on the blog page
Explain that once the student has watched the video, they are to complete the
questions below the video on a sheet of paper and bring that to class the next day. This
will serve as their entry ticket to get into class tomorrow morning
III. IN-CLASS LESSON STUDY DAY 2
-Anticipatory Set
Teacher collects the entry tickets at the door as students come into class
Teacher asks class if they have any questions on the video they watched last night
Teacher begins a short introduction about word problems, and asks the students to talk
at their tables about what they learned from the video overall
Have one student from each table share something their table learned as a whole from
the video.
IV. PURPOSE
The purpose of this lesson is to inform students about word problems so they can solve
problems in the real world
V. LESSON PRESENATION
Teacher will go to white board and read a word problem to the class
Then, teacher will illustrate the word problem on the board and solve it with the students,
explaining the steps along the way (Provide examples using numbers and symbols, like
the video)
Give word problems until students are comfortable with concept, then move to
worksheet exercise game
Students will separate into teams
Teacher will display a word problem on the smart board that the students have to solve
within their teams (45 seconds-1 minute)
Have students display their answers on a small white board that is provided with their
team
Whichever team answers correctly first, gets a point. The first team to 5 points wins!

VII. CLOSURE/CONCLUSION/REVIEW LEARNING OUTCOMES

Formative: Ask questions throughout lesson presentation/game to make sure students are
comprehending the subject matter
Summative: End of unit test/exam of word problems
