Language
In language the children are working hard in their groups. The Blue reading group has been focusing
on short vowel sounds and the h brothers, (th, sh, ch). They are also working on antonyms and the
parts of speech. Our green group has worked with short and long vowel sounds, consonant blends,
the subject and predicate of a sentence, synonyms and types of sentences. Our purple group has
been working with vowel teams, blends, plural endings and inflected endings. All reading groups read
from the Reading Street Anthology, while being supplemented with our wonderful Montessori
materials. The stories have a range in genres from animal fantasy to expository and historical fiction. All
children continue to work on their sight words and vocabulary automaticity (automatic recognition).

Writing
Our classroom runs a Writers Workshop model of writing. This
means that the children receive a mini-lesson based on writing
needs, and then are encouraged to practice that skill in their
writing that day. We have completed our 1st pieces of writing! We
heard about some wonderful trips and adventures! Next, we are
moving onto Informational text and will be writing a class book.
The kids have chosen rocks and gems as their topic and each
child or pair of children will research, take notes and write about
their specific one. Keep an eye out for information about our class
book!

Science & Social Studies

Our 1st years have completed their unit on sound. We ended our unit with a demonstration on a
bass violin and a performance by our 1st year musicians& engineers (with homemade instruments)
, 2nd years are continuing their work with matter and 3rd years with force and motion. In social
studies our first years have worked with maps, different characteristics of a community and the
seasons and months. 2nd years are working with maps and creating maps of rural, urban and
suburban. 3rd years are focused on the fundamental needs of man, and how those needs were
met during early settlements in Michigan.
