CITY /COUNTY NORFOLK, VA BASIN (HRT LOT # 39) formerly the Old VEPCO
plant (the site) that impacts Ghent, Youngs Terrace, Tidewater Gardens, and Calvert Square.
Boulevard and Monticello Avenue on the east, south and west, respectfully, and by Princess
Anne Road and Salter Street on the north and east, respectively (the Site) adjacent to and
directly south and east, respectively the housing project and downtown Norfolk.
TYPE OF POLLUTION: hazardous substances, buried throughout the toxic site including
coal tar, coal ash, iron and constituents associated with these hazardous wastes which include
hydrocarbons (PAHs) cyanide and phenolics, inorganic nitrogen compounds, metals and
gases such as methane vapor pollution which are acutely toxic, chronically toxic, and
chrysene, indeno[1,2,3-cd] pyrene, benzo [a] pyrene, benzo [b] fluoranthene, benezo [ghi]
perylene and benz[a] anthracene, migrating off-site through the air, soils, surface water and
contaminated groundwater beneath (the Site) onto the housing property and surrounding
areas referenced above of downtown Norfolk, facilitated by seasonal rain, wind and flooding.
