Unit Title: Me, Myself, and I Name: Shaye Uyematsu

Content Area: Science Biology Grade Level: High School
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

CA Content Standards
HS-LS1-1. Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the
essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells.
HS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within
multicellular organisms.
HS-LS1-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis.

CA Common Core Standards

RST.11-12.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to important distinctions the
author makes and to any gaps or inconsistencies in the account. (HS-LS1-1)
WHST.912.2.ae Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or
technical processes. (HS-LS1-1)
WHST.912.7 Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or
solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject,
demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. (HS-LS1-3)
WHST.11-12.8 Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively;
assess the strengths and limitations of each source in terms of the specific task, purpose, and audience; integrate
information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and overreliance on any one source
and following a standard format for citation. (HS-LS1-3)
WHST.912.9 Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. (HS-LS1-1)
SL.11-12.5 Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to
enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. (HS-LS1-2)

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will learn the processes of transcription and translation.

Differences between DNA and RNA
The functions of mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA
How DNA relates to amino acid sequence
Students will learn about the main bodily systems.
Cardiovascular, circulatory, digestive, excretory, endocrine, immune, nervous, respiratory, and reproductive
Functions of each component of the systems
How the systems work hand-in-hand to maintain homeostasis
Students will learn how the protein made from DNA is essential to the body.
What proteins make
Hormones, enzymes, etc.
Build and renew every type of cell

Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will engage in multiple activities to understand the importance of proteins, how transcription and translation work, and the processes of the different
body systems. Before starting any of the lessons, students will take a survey so that I can see how much they already know. Once their prior knowledge has been assessed,
we will move into Lesson 1. In Lesson 1, students will listen to the lecture will filling in their Body System Notes. After the lecture is finished, they will get into groups and
discuss any questions they had about the lecture. They will be given a crossword puzzle worksheet to advance their knowledge about the body systems. A quiz will be
admitted to make sure they dont forget the material. Lesson 2 will be focused on the digestive system and its enzymes. I will rehash how the digestive system works and go
over the enzymes that are involved. The students will individually make a comic strip of 3D animated video of a foods journey through the digestive system. Their stories
will be presented to the class. In Lesson 3, I will lecture on how DNA is turned into proteins. Another group discussion will take place. Students will then individually create
flow chart to organize the steps of transcription and translation. I will also be giving them an AP Biology exam short answer question, in which they will have to write an
essay to answer the big question: how do our bodies maintain homeostasis? An exam covering the topics in each lesson will then be administered.
