INSTRUCTIONS:
1. This take home exercise should be done INDIVIDUALLY.
2. Solutions and answers should be written on ruled papers (8.5 x 13). You can use both sides of a sheet. Multiple pages should
be stapled together before submitting.
3. Do not forget to write your CLASS NUMBER/S on the UPPER LEFT corner of every answer sheet.
4. Deadline of submissions is on 6PM of the THURSDAY before the scheduled date of the exam.
5. Write the following on the first page of your answer sheets before the starting your solutions:
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY PLEDGE: On my honor, I will not give nor receive inappropriate aid in this
examination. (your signature here)

CombinedLoading-1. A load of P = 1,800 N acts on the structure shown in Fig. CL-Ia. The machine part has
a uniform thickness of 6 mm (i.e., 6-mm thickness in the z direction). With reference to Fig. CL-Ib, determine:
A. The state of stress at point H.
B. The state of stress at point K.

CombinedLoading-2. Figure CL-II shows a

steel pipe, with an outside diameter of 95 mm
and an inside diameter of 85 mm, which
transports a fluid that has an internal pressure
of 1500 kPa. In addition to the fluid pressure,
it also supports the loadings shown.
Determine:
A. The state of stress at point K.
B. The state of stress at point H.

StressTrans-1.
A. Draw the Mohrs circle for the state of stress
shown. Label all pertinent points.

Determine the following:

N
B. Principal stresses
C. Maximum in-plane shear stress
D. Stress on the horizontal and vertical planes
E. Shear stress on stress element N and M.

StressTrans&TheoFail-1. Consider a point in a bronze structural

member that is subjected to plane stress. Normal and shear stresses
acting on horizontal and vertical planes at the point are shown. The
yield strength of the bronze is Y = 345 MPa.

A. Draw Mohrs circle for this state of stress.

B. Determine the principal stresses and the maximum in-plane shear
stress acting at the point using Mohrs circle.
C. Show the stresses obtained in A and B on an appropriate sketch
D. What is the factor of safety predicted by the maximum-shear-
stress theory of failure for the stress state shown? Does the
component fail according to this theory?
E. What is the value of the von Mises equivalent stress for the given state of plane stress?
F. What is the factor of safety predicted by the failure criterion of the maximum-distortion-energy theory of
failure? Does the component fail according to this theory?

failure.
B. Determine the Mises equivalent stresses at points H and K.
C. Determine the factors of safety at points H and K predicted by the maximum-distortion-energy
theory.
