but two. First, remove the term flushable from all wipes and products with
the potential of being put down the drain. Having owned a septic pump-
ing business for several years, we have been able to experience firsthand the
damage and problems these products can create.
Second, I dont think it would be a specific regulation because regs are
in constant flux as technologies and equipment change and we are con-
stantly playing catch-up, but I would find a way for the regulatory groups
to be adequately staffed, trained and financed so that the level of active
enforcement increases throughout the industry. It seems to be a common
problem nationally that even when regulations are implemented with-
out an adequate enforcement effort, the new regs are ignored. They end up
putting the compliance operators at a competitive disadvantage; customers
are being misled, and environmental problems are continuing. I think you
see the results in jurisdictions that have well-established, effective enforce-
ment involvement where there is a mutual respect for the regulatory group
and the on-site professional. ARMAL Inc.

n Chuck Lang Jr.s area of central Ohio, competition has become fierce
for septic tank pumping over the past 10 years. Yet his company
Chucks Septic Tank, Sewer & Drain Cleaning in Grove City has
roughly tripled in size since 2014.
While that may sound counterintuitive, the name of the company ex-
plains how it happened. The business established by Langs father, Chuck
Lang Sr., in 1970 as Chucks Septic Tank does more than just pump septic
tanks. It also pumps grease traps, recycles oil and grease, inspects pipelines
and cleans sewers and drainlines throughout Ohio.
It was hard for us to branch out (into more septic tank pumping),
says Lang, 48. Its certainly not the easy choice to enter new markets be-
cause it comes with expenses. You take a gamble that a machine like a

PLANNING AHEAD
In short, when a windfall comes your way, youve got two tasks: to get a
clear picture of how long it will really last, and to sort out a realistic plan to
spend wisely and help it grow.
Better still, though, is being prepared.
At the very least, consider short-term preparation, Kent says. Plenty of
his clients come to him after the sale, but he advocates enlisting a wealth
management professional sooner than that when youre putting your
business on the block, if not before. That way, he points out, you can manage
your own expectations for the transaction.
Knowing how much you really need to recoup could motivate you to
price your business more aggressively. At the very least, if you know upfront
the limits of your prospective proceeds, you can start thinking about other
resources to tap to help pay for your postretirement life.
Planning ahead doesnt have to start there, however. If youre still mid-
career, or even just starting out, its not too soon to adopt simple strategies
that will improve your endgame position:
If youre not saving for retirement but consider the business equity to
be your pension, chuck that idea pronto. Consult with your financial advisor,
and establish a retirement account. As a business owner, you have several
options. The tax advantages alone should be enough to motivate you.
Consider your business spending patterns. Often, people with small
businesses in lean years scrimp and they save, and in great years splurge to
reward themselves for the tough years, Kent says. If thats you, work with
your management team and your outside accountants to put more dis-
cipline in your business budget. Saving for a rainy day can also yield extra
money for retirement, for example.
Enlist professional help whether through a specialized wealth man-
agement firm, like Bernstein, or going to a fee-based financial planner. Fee-
based is important: You want someone whose income doesnt include
incentives for you to purchase investment products, insurance policies or
other such instruments from the planners business. And dont be shy about
asking direct questions so you know exactly what youre getting.
Whether youve just sold your business, youre getting ready to sell it,
or youre simply dreaming of that day years or even decades from now, its
important to know that when it comes to how that act will change your fi-
nancial life, you dont have to go it alone.
Find a good advisor who can help you make sense of it now and for
the rest of your life. If for no other reason, just think how much more relaxing
that kind of help can make your golf game.

CASE STUDY:
GREASE INTERCEPTOR REPLACED
IN HOTEL BASEMENT
Problem: A new Austin, Texas, hotel used a large freestanding grease interceptor located
in its basement. The citys grease ordinance is similar to requirements around the country
for kitchen wastewater sewer effluent. Unlike a buried concrete grease interceptor that is
subject to compressive forces, the freestanding interceptor is subject to tensile (bending and
stretching) forces, requiring steel construction. Due to the harsh environment and punishing
pumping services, scratches in the coating quickly lead to deterioration and ultimate failure.
Solution: ParkUSA provided and installed the new GreaseTrooper GTS Grease Intercep-
tor. Stainless steel construction offers superior corrosion-resistant performance and durabil-
ity, according to the manufacturer. It is UPC listed.
Result: Service interruptions and capital expenses were nearly eliminated with proper rou-
tine maintenance. 888/611-7275; www.parkusa.com.
