THE POST

The United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC) supports citizens’ efforts to hold
their governments to account for the achievement of the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs). Raising awareness on the MDGs among citizens is one of the main
tasks of the UNMC. To ensure that the UNMC message reaches the widest possible
public, the Internet is of paramount importance.

This post is an exciting opportunity to contribute to UNMC’s online mobilization


through innovative and creative engagement online and across mobile platforms.
The post will take responsibility for developing digital strategies for campaign
projects that recruit and engage people in our campaign and contribute to achieving
the MDGs. The post also includes originating copy, editing submissions, networking
with supporters and the blogging community, researching and implementing digital
services for campaigning and project management of multimedia content and
engagement tools.

Reporting to the Head of Communications, the web campaigner will also take a lead
role to further develop the Millennium Campaign’s presence on social networks and
mobilize these supporters to join the Stand Up, Take Action and make noise for the
Millennium Development Goals Event from September 17-19 2010.

MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Content development across UNMC digital portfolio


a) Develop digital communications plans for campaigns that inspire and engage
audiences through the website, emails, social media and mobile communications.
b) Research and produce original content based on interviews, investigations,
reports and external sources for the website, emails and social media.
c) Manage the production of multimedia content such as video, animation, audio
slideshows and interactive content.
d) Commission and manage external agencies to develop applications, designs and
multimedia content where necessary.
e) Regularly monitor Stand Up, Take Action events and impact stories and
showcase them on the different UNMC digital channels.

2. Online campaigning
a) Take a lead role developing and implementing digital strategies for online
campaigning, social media and communications for campaign projects.
b) Provide research based strategic advice on the development and use of new
tools for online campaigning.
c) Keep up to date with innovations in digital technology and techniques and identify
opportunities to test and implement new tools that will help increase our online
campaigning impact.
d) Monitor and analyze recruitment and engagement response rates and impact and
adapt tools and techniques to increase audience conversion rates.

3. Social media
a) Keep up to date on new social media tools, best practice and how other
organizations and companies are using them in order to identify new campaigning
opportunities.
b) Manage UNMC’s global presence on social media including regular updates and
personal communications with fans and followers.
c) Develop and implement strategies and new tools for recruiting and engaging
supporters through social media.
d) Monitor and respond to supporter comments and emails regarding online content
and campaigning.

3. Support the overall communications strategy of UNMC


a) Ensure consistency in the implementation of the Communications Strategy in all
digital content
b) Play an active role as a member of the Communications Team including
attendance at team meetings
d) Keep up to date with UNMC’s campaign plans and activities.

1. Technical skills
• At least 2 years experience in online organizing, campaigning or communications
experience
• Experience of producing website applications, multimedia content, or mobile
applications
• Excellent Drupal knowledge and experience with other CMS
• Excellent web publishing skills including XHTML and CSS
• Experience of briefing and managing external consultants such as web developers
and designers
• Solid project management experience
• Previous experience using Content Management Systems
• Experience using online services to campaign for change, for example, email
service providers and email advocacy tools
• Ability to develop and analyze email and online metrics based on benchmarks and
best practices for non-profits
• Ideally, knowledge or experience of information architecture, user interface design
and usability issues and techniques

2. Editorial skills
• Exceptional writing and editing skills
• Experience writing or participating in blogs, community sites and social media
• An understanding of internet communications strategies, blogging best practice,
social media trends, techniques and information architecture
• Skills to build and maintain relationships with bloggers and key online outlets
• Experience editing images or preparing graphics for the web and email
communications

3. Online Campaigning and social media skills


• Strong capacity to think strategically and formulate long-term communications
and engagement plans
• Experience developing and implementing online campaigns and/or marketing
strategies
• Up-to-date experience in social media and innovative digital storytelling tools
• Experience engaging and building communities on social networks, particularly
Twitter and Facebook
• An interest in and understanding of online campaign methods and the contribution
campaign work can make to achieving change.
• Ideally, experience with the use of mobile messaging tools to engage supporters

4. Team work
• Ability to work collaboratively in project teams drawn from wide range of
disciplines, both as a team member and a team leader
• Ability to develop good working relationships internally, across the global
organization and with external consultants and strategic partners
• Ability to make and maintain effective contacts and relationships with individuals,
networks of individuals and groups both online and offline
• A genuine interest in motivating, supporting and developing volunteers online
