Numerical Idioms

• greater than is appropriate when describing numbers alone but more than
should be used when describing the numbers of objects or when making
comparisons.
• greater than one hundred and more than one hundred fish

• Fewer should be used to describe countable objects but less than when the
objects are not quantifiable (fewer hotels and less real estate)

• number should describe quantities that can be counted and amount should
describe those that cannot (number of people and amount of congestion)..

less legislation …lower numbers

fewer hotels …. less real estate
number of people….amount of congestion

69. as much as a hundred is incorrect; the idiom as many as should be used to describe
a number of objects (as many as ten speakers but as much as the debt of...).

70. The only time that the plural numbers should be used is when one wants to discuss
actual numbers, as in the numbers 4 and 12.
Subjunctive

65. The recently reelected president of Cyprus has asked that the United States would
encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now controls their northern
regions, to withdraw from his country.
(A) that the United States would encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and
now controls their

and now controls their
(C) that the United States would encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and

(D) that the United States encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now

(E) the United States to encourage Turkey, which invaded the island in 1974 and now

The verb usage in E isn't incorrect; you can use the verb "to ask" without it
being in the subjunctive form.
However, the pronoun in D absolutely is wrong. The use of a plural pronoun to refer to a country
is definitely incorrect, and is the kind of pronoun error that's tested fairly regularly.

67. State legislators fear that traffic accidents would be more frequent and severe if the
speed limit was increased to 75 mph on rural highways.
(A) would be more frequent and severe if the speed limit was increased
(B) would be more frequent and severe were the speed limit to be increased up
(C) would be more frequent and severe were the speed limit increased
(D) would become more frequent and severe with the speed limit increased
(E) would become more frequent and severe after the speed limit has increased
