Paper 1 uses numerical modeling to analyze the effect of lateral soil movements on a single square pile. It finds that the ratio of maximum soil pressure to undrained shear strength is around 8 times higher at the ground surface for both stiff and flexible piles. Flexible piles allow larger deflections.
Paper 2 presents a nonlinear analysis method for laterally loaded rigid piles in cohesionless soil. It assumes the ultimate soil resistance and modulus of subgrade reaction vary linearly with depth. Results agree with 3D finite element analyses and field tests.
Paper 3 uses 3D finite element modeling to investigate load-transfer curves for steel and drilled shafts under lateral loading based on field test data. Parametric studies show pile diameter

Paper 1: Three-dimensional analysis of single pile response to lateral soil movements
This research focused on the effect of lateral soil movements on a single square pile by using numerical tool ABAQUS. The pile was restrained against displacement and rotation in all direction at head and tip. Induced Soil pressure on pile shaft due to lateral movement was calculated from output of finite element program. A 1m 1m square pile having length of 15m is used to run the model and the soil behavior was predicted by an elasticperfectly plastic von Mises model. The normalized py curves at different depths were generated for the stiff and flexible piles. The ratio of maximum ultimate soil pressure to undrained shear strength have been found 10.0 for stiff pile and 10.8 for flexible pile, at the ground surface which is around 8 times. In this research, pile deflection in the early stage of soil movement is also an important point, which results a stiffer p- y curve at smaller displacement. Finally the flexible pile allowed larger deflection than that of the stiff pile. Paper 2: Nonlinear analysis of laterally loaded rigid piles in cohesionless soil A method for the nonlinear analysis of laterally loaded rigid piles in cohesionless soil is represented in this paper. In this purpose, it is assumed that the ultimate soil resistance and the modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction vary linearly with depth. Also the pile is rigid and p-y relation is nonlinear. Three different cases were considered to analyze the loaddisplacement behavior of the pile and corresponding system equations were also developed based on force and moment equilibrium. The results of this method is finally compared with those of centrifugal tests and 3D finite element analysis for its validation. The output of this method agreed with previous research like 3D finite element analysis as well as field tests. Paper 3: Analysis of soil resistance on laterally loaded piles based on 3D soilpile interaction P-Y curve is mostly used to find the load distribution and deflection of large diameter piles in clay, loaded laterally. This paper presents the appropriate parametric studies needed for verifying the p- y characteristic. In parametric study, a series of Finite element analysis on drilled shafts in clay soil were performed to investigate the governing factors of lateral load transfer which are unidentified during field tests. All data of the field load tests were adopted to construct a 3D finite- element model. The main aim of this research is to investigate lateral load-transfer curve with respect to steel pile and drilled shaft, which are constructed on soil profiles encountered in Korean offshore deposits. The nonlinear 3D finite element modeling has been presented and explained considering the soilpile continuity. Compared to the results of the field load tests, it is shown that the py curve from the 3D FE analysis is capable of predicting the behavior of a large diameter pile under lateral loading. The Parametric studies represents that pile diameter have a linear variation with the modulus of subgrade reaction and the ultimate soil resistance. On the other hand, pile elastic modulus, interface property and pile-toe condition have no noticeable effect on the p- y characteristics.
