Communication can be defined as the act of transferring information from one place to

another. It takes into account Verbal and Non-Verbal, written and oral. Technology has a

significant impact on social behaviour in Contemporary Caribbean. Through the use of

communicating, social media is the most popular form of socializing. According to Nasser&

Mustapha socialization is the process where individuals learn about the culture of their society

and what is acceptable and unacceptable.

Social media has connected billions of individuals all over the world. It still has a positive

and negative impact on the social behaviour of others. Positive impact would be as follows:

It allows for Networking

This allows individuals to be able to build relationship whether personal or business

orientated. Mechanical Solidarity according to Emile Durkheim is referred to as the

social interaction of members of a society who have common values and beliefs. The

common value and beliefs constitute a collective conscience that works internally.

Organic solidarity on the other hand is the social integration that arises out of the need of

individuals for a service. In our Caribbean social media sites are commonly used to

network by millions of people. Businesses use networking to achieve both internal and

external growth.

It enhances or facilitates Social Identity

Erving Goffman looks at Presentation of Self this is where in early life individuals learn

about his or her presentation of self in order to create distinctive appearances and satisfy

particular audiences. Goffman looks at altering the presentation of the self as an

impression. Charles Horton Cooley Looking Glass Self is relatable as it gives us an

overview that children gain an impression on how others perceive them to be through

interaction. We imagine how we appear and how others judge our appearance. In our

modern Caribbean persons use social media as a platform to develop their identity. They

exemplify the lifestyle of others as to them its means of fitting in. Facebook and

Instagram portrays an image to the public based on what is being thus some people try to

emilite what they see on these sites even though they fail to understand the concept of

themselves.

Negative impact would be:

Change in Behavioural Pattern

Behavioural Pattern comes into play when there is a change in how we behave. This can

be a result of internal and external factors. Mass media platform can result in a person

becoming addicted to using them. This will end up causing that individual to become

dysfunctional. George Herbert Mead coined Symbolic Interaction this assumes that

individuals place meaning on objects in the environment and it is these meanings that

determine their behaviour in society. It looks takes into account the Self, Symbol and

Interaction. Symbol assumes that individuals place meaning on objects. The word is

made up of symbols that are created by humans to give meaning in society. Such symbols

are facilitated through communication. The Self refers to the individuals in society as

Actors Mead believes that the mind and the self are socially constructed and out of

this interaction each person internalizes how he or she is perceived by others. (I) refers to

self, (Me) refers to what others perceive and (generalized other) influences interaction in

society. Interaction looks at how people share common understanding of the symbols for

example language.
Isolation

Individuals begin to isolate themselves from friends, peer group and family as a result of

the impact of social media on their behaviour. When an individual isolates himself from

interacting with others around him or her he becomes dysfunctional and will develop

disorder such as Bipolar and Attentive Disorder Deficit (ADD). Face to face

communication is very important for the social development of any wellbeing. Social

media or any technological platform should therefore be given a limit it which it is used

by the public therefore not allowing it to consume the lives of individuals.
