Othello School District has very high rates of Hispanic ethnicity compared to the others
shown on this graph. As you can see the special programs that are presented in the graph
correlate to the race aspect that is shown. These programs were founded to benefit the students as
well as provide assistance to the families. I attended Lutacaga Elementary in Othello, WA so I
witnessed these statistics first hand. As this graph shows, free or reduced-price meals has a very
high percentage because families that come to or that live in Othello work in agriculture. They
come to work in the fields or other opportunities to provide for their family but sometimes are
lower income families. Each one of these students has a completely different upbringing. As it
states in Chapter 1 of our textbook, ELL students vary widely in all aspects. Some of these
students have lived in the United States their whole life while others have never been to the US
before. A small percent of the students are migrant students but a huge percent of them are
transitional bilingual. In the text it states that most ELLs are born in the US, but the level of
English spoken varies significantly. Also ELLs vary widely by race, ethnicity, level of schooling,
parents proficiency in English and many others (Wright, p.2).
