Project Brief and Guideline

Course Name: Design of Steel and Timber Structures

Code: SKAA 3233
Lecturer: Prof. Ir. Dr. Mahmood Md Tahir & Dr. Shek Poi Ngian
Project: Structural Steel Design of a Building

Introduction
A design project for year 3 Civil Engineering students is a partial fulfillment for the SKAA 3233 course. This
project is carried out in groups and each group can have a maximum of 4 persons.
All the works pertaining to this project must be carried out and shared by each member of the group. The
bound report for this project must be submitted no later than week 16.

Design of a Building
The architectural drawings of a portal frame in a school at Kangkar Pulai, Johor are as attached. The
drawings include the plan view of the ground floor, attic floor, roof and the sectional views of the building.

Loading
Roof Level: Gk = 1kN/m2; Qk = 1.5kN/m2
Other Floor Level: Gk = 4kN/m2 (selfweight of the slab included); Qk = 2kN/m2
All slabs are made of hollow core precast concrete slab and thickness of all brick walls can be taken as 125
mm.

Your tasks
a) Calculation sheet of main roof truss and purlin design.
a. Show the analysis of truss and internal forces of each member of truss
b. The design of truss members and purlin using angle section
b) Calculation sheet of beam design (using universal beam section) at attic floor level.
c) Calculation sheet of column design (using universal column section).
d) Calculation sheet of connection design (welded or bolted connection). (Eg. beam to column
connection, beam to beam connection, connection between truss member)
e) Prepare layout plan for roof truss and purlins. (Eg. Distance between trusses, span, detail sizing,
height of the truss and connection detail)
f) Prepare layout plan for attic floor level. (Eg. Beam number, beam size, dimension and load
distribution)
g) Sketch the building using software and prepare drawings from different view.
Assessment
The full mark of this project that is graded based on the submitted report is 100. This total mark will then
be converted to an equivalent percentage as indicated in the course outline. As for the generic skill, the
Teamwork Skill (PO7) will be assessed during the process of doing this project. A sample of the assessment
in the form of Peer Review is attached in Appendix A.
