A Critical Edition
with a synopsis of strophic design and metrics
Rip Cohen
The Johns Hopkins University
This edition presents a text with critical apparatus of the 22 cantigas damigo which display aaBB
forms along with an analysis of strophic form and rhyme systems. The numbering is taken from Rip
Cohen, 500 Cantigas dAmigo, Porto 2003 (whose notes the reader should consult for text-critical
questions), but both the text and the apparatus have been revised and the strophic design of several
compositions has been reanalyzed. It should be stressed that there are far fewer aaBB songs here than in
that edition, since many texts presented there as aaBB have subsequently been reinterpreted as aaB
(letters in bold indicate verses with internal rhyme).
Angle brackets are used for additions (e.g., <ai>) as well as for those parts of refrains which are
regularly truncated in the manuscripts after the first strophe. Words enclosed in square brackets, e.g., [de
Rea], are suspect and should probably be deleted. Tils (indicating nasalized vowels) which are missing in
the codices have been added where historical phonology expects them and 13th-century manuscripts of
the lyric regularly present them. When word-final and word-initial vowels cannot metrically occupy a
single syllable an underline marks the elision of a final vowel (madre,_as = madr as; comigo,_e = comig e;
triste_and = trist and ), the absorption of an initial vowel (na_ermida = na rmida; se_al = se l; verria_aqui =
verria qui) and diphthongization (l_ir) of the two vowels in contact. All inter-verbal vocalic encounters
which are not marked in this way should be taken as cases of hiatus. Inner cola (or, in some cases, regular
word-breaks) are shown by a vertical bar | in the text.1
Each cantiga is preceded by an analysis of strophic design, metrics, and rhyme systems. For this
analysis, the strophe is divided into two periods (the body of strophe and the refrain) separated by the
symbol . In Johan Servando 9, the symbol marks the fiinda. In notating metrics, a number such as 5
means the verse or colon has five syllables with a masculine cadence, while a number such as 5 means
the verse or colon has six syllables with the final accent on the fifth syllable and a feminine cadence. A
single slash indicates that the scansion of that verse or colon varies in different strophes: 9/10 (see Cohen
2003: 44-47; Fassanelli 2005). Cola are indicated by square brackets following the overall syllable count of
the period, e.g., 11 [5+5]. For assonant rhymes, a hyphen is used, e.g., e-o.
The 22 texts are followed by a synopsis of strophic design and metrics. English verse translations
of the poems are provided in the Appendix.
1The editorial criteria and the symbols and conventions used in the critical apparatus are essentially the
same described in detail in Cohen 2003: 37-43. By colon is meant here a metrical segment which occurs
within a verse but which is long enough to stand alone by itself. The longest cola in aaBB cantigas damigo
consist of eight syllables (8 or 7), while the shortest, with one exception, have five syllables (5 or 4). In
that exception (in Charinho 6), there is a colon of four syllables in the first verse of the second period
which is marked by internal rhyme.
