Investigations in Science 7 November 3, 2017

Announcements:
Next Friday is the last day of quarter 1. My gradebook will be closing on
Wednesday, November 8th. Please have your child take care of any Z work over the
weekend.
Next Thursday we will having optional parent conferences. Please see the
attachment for more information.
We are seeing work completion as an area of improvement that is needed for
some students. Here is a list of assignments that were graded this week:

What we did this week:

Monday we continued with cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is a way

that cells produce energy. We got the colored beads back out that we used last
week and first created the same reactants and products for photosynthesis. We
had beads that represented carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. We put them together
in groupings to create molecules. Then, using 5 clues listed on the worksheet,
students were trying to guess what the chemical formula is for cellular respiration.
Students are not marked incorrect if they didn't guess correctly.
Tuesday we watched our first Bill Nye on Respiration. We also watched an
Amoeba Sisters video explained how cells undergo cellular respiration in order to
extract energy from food and that there are two types of respiration, anaerobic,
and aerobic. It also showed the cycle between photosynthesis and respiration.
Wednesday, to help understand cellular respiration, we completed a lab with
yeast, sugar, water, and balloons. 1 spoonful of yeast and 2 of sugar were added to
a bottle/flask. The bottle was filled of the way full with warm water and then a
balloon was immediately placed on top. The other bottle had yeast, water, and no
sugar. Groups measured the diameter of their balloon every 5 minutes. They
should have seen that the balloon with sugar inflated with carbon dioxide. We saw
some very mixed results and talked about all the errors that could have
occurred. Luckily, every class had several groups (or at least 1) that worked and
we were able to use that data. Pictures are on my blog.
Thursday we finished the lab and took a look at a simulation on cellular
respiration on our Chromebooks.
Today we are heading to Medieval Times!!! Hopefully we have a jousting good
time. I will put pictures on my blog later today.

Have a great weekend!
