OTIS MASKING ASSIGNMENTS

As you are aware, masking (understanding it, and being able to do it) is a very important area of
audiology. To help you gain more practice in masking , the OTIS Cases machine contains simulated
hearing losses, which require masking. There are FIVE programs, which you are required to do.
Please submit the audiograms (showing masked and unmasked thresholds) and your masking tables
on the answer sheet available in LMS.

1. Masking is calibrated in 'effective masking level'.

2. You should include 3000 and 6000 Hz for air conduction testing, and 250 Hz for bone
conduction testing.
3. The 'patient' is a little inconsistent (more life-like).
4. Use the correct method to obtain a threshold (eg. present the tone for 1-2 secs and give an
adequate inter-stimulus interval).
5. Remember to turn the masking off when not needed.
6. In order to demonstrate your understanding of masking we would like you to perform
masking by headphones in the first instance (therefore interaural attenuation might be as
little as 40dB). If you have then demonstrated that you may be overmasking, you may then
use insertphones to mask. You may then continue using inserts for the remainder of your
testing.
7. You also need to interpret results (eg. overmasking, insufficient masking, no response at
audiometer limits) if you don't obtain a masked threshold. Remember you may still be
overmasking even with insertphones.
Please submit the completed audiogram (complete with masking tables) into the Turnitin Assignment
link on the LMS, using the answer sheet available on the LMS. Note that if it is incorrect, you may be
asked to re-submit it.
The following dates show the final date for each audiogram to be handed in.

Audiogram Submission Due Date

OTIS Cases 1,2,3,4,5 April 11th 5.00pm

The answers will be made available once all students have submitted.

We are using the Turnitin PeerMark system. Each student who submits an assignment
will be assigned another students work to assess. Please do not put your name
anywhere, so that assessment remains anonymous. Use the answers provided to
complete your assessment, and please try to be constructive in your feedback to fellow
students.

Audiogram Peer Review Due Date

OTIS Cases 1,3,5 April 28th 11.59pm

Completing the review, as well as completing your own assignment, is a hurdle

requirement.

If you have any queries, please ask.
