Supersedes T.B. Group 17 number 0301 dated Sept. 17, 2003 due to added Model and
Model years.
Condition
The TDI PD (Pumpe-Dse) engine requires
and must always use engine oil that expressly
conforms to Volkswagen oil quality standard
VW 505 01.
Service
WARNING
Failure to use engine oil for your engine
that expressly conforms to Volkswagen
oil quality standard VW 505 01 can cause
engine failure on the highway that can
cause a crash and serious personal
injury.

Whether using a synthetic based or

petroleum-based* engine oil, the oil must
conform to Volkswagen oil quality standard -
VW 505 01 in order to keep the vehicles
engine running smoothly and help prevent the
formation of harmful sludge and deposits that
can lead to expensive repairs.
*) At the time of this printing, all of the engine oils
Volkswagen is aware of that meet the exacting
Volkswagen oil quality standard are synthetic-based.
Some engine oils which currently meet
Volkswagen oil quality standard VW 505 01
are:
D Castrol 505 01, SAE 5W-40 synthetic motor
oil (available through Castrol distributors).
D ELF Excellium DID, SAE 5W-40 (available
through ELF distributors).
D Motul Motul Specific 505 01, SAE 5W-40
(available through Motul independent
distributors).

(available through Quaker State distributors).
D Total Quartz 505.01, SAE 5W-40 (available
through Total distributors).
D Volkswagen Part No: G 052 167 A2, a special
5W-40 synthetic motor oil (only available at
authorized Volkswagen and Audi Dealers).
Engine oil, servicing
All scheduled Volkswagen services and
topping off of engine oil between services
require oil which meets Volkswagen oil quality
standard VW 505 01.
No other engine oil may be used in this
engine unless it conforms to the Volkswagen
oil quality standard - VW 505 01.
Engine oil, topping off
z It is recommended that the customer always
carry a spare quart / liter oil which meets
Volkswagen oil quality standard VW 505 01
in case the engine oil needs topping off while
on the road. The spare quart of oil should
always be stored in its original container that
is securely closed in the luggage
compartment. Make sure the container is
securely stowed.
z Engine damage caused by using the wrong
engine oil will not be covered by the
applicable Vehicle Warranties.
