Their Eyes Were Watching God: Summative Assessment

Pick 1 of these options for your final project for the Their Eyes Were Watching God. Notice that
some of these must be done in a group while others are individual. By next class period you
need to come with a choice and a plan for how you are going to execute your project. If you are
doing a group project, then you need to include the people who will be in your group. Each
student will give a brief presentation of their projects.

Note: For those of you who choose an option that is not an essay, you must include a minimum 1
page reflection on the process including:

Your final assessment of the novel, a description of your assignment, and something new or
interesting you learned as a result of the assignment.

Here are your options:

1. Give a speech: Imagine yourself as Phoeby or one of the characters in Eatonville who
might tell Janies story. Write and prepare a speech that describes some of the major
events of Janies life and includes some of the life lessons she has learned. Think about
the individual bias you might have and the lens through which you view Janies life.
This must be 7 to 10 minutes.
2. Stage an interview with Janie as an old woman. Come up with a minimum of 10
interview questions you would ask her about her life in the book and after the book. This
is a partner project (one person as the interviewer and one as Janie).
3. Create a wall hanging representing a life lesson that you learned from the book. This may
take the form of a plaque, a poster, or a work of fabric art that conveys some lessons from
the book in both words and pictures.
4. Find some important symbols that are present or might be significant to the book and
create a photo exhibit to share with the class. Take your own photos and either print
them or create a digital presentation.
5. Write a selection of 3 poems that represent some of the images and your personal
reflections from reading the book. These poems can be in any form or style that you
would like. You will choose at least one to share with the class.
6. Essay: Throughout her life Janie has to fight what is expected of her by other people. In
2 to 4 pages, follow her life in the novel and comment on how she battles these
perceptions. Must use a minimum of 3 quotes from the book.
7. Essay: Analyze some of the historical influences on the book. In 2 to 4 pages examine
how Hurston was influenced by Harlem Renaissance culture (including, but not limited
to, music, art, and poetry). Must use a minimum of 3 quotes from the book.
