ABSTRACT: Since the early 1960s, the study of translation has begun
to conquer a more defined space within academic institutions and
publications. Since then, all the basically essentialist attempts at
widening and consolidating such a space have declared their interest
in making that study as rational and as systematic as possible, so
that it would be recognized as a legitimate research area which
should also legislate over all translation practices, no matter which
languages, goals or circumstances were involved. This paper intends
to present a critical account of the main attempts at occupying the
academic terrain claimed by "translation studies," arguing that what
has motivated them, above all, is a certain imperialistic thrust in
which what is actually at stake is the prestige and the power of the
trends in the name of which they intend to discipline the translators
task.
Num ensaio publicado alguns anos mais tarde, Holmes amplia ainda
mais os poderes que idealmente atribui ao "especialista que deseja
descrever a relao entre o texto traduzido e seu original": "ele deve
tentar determinar as caractersticas dos dois mapas do tradutor [,
referentes s lnguas e culturas envolvidas,] e descobrir seu sistema
de regras, aquelas que indicam os desvios, a projeo e, sobretudo, a
correspondncia em outras palavras, a potica do tradutor"
(Holmes 1978: 77). Alm disso, caberia a esse especialista "a tarefa
de elaborar [um] repertrio" que mapeasse toda a evoluo de uma
determinada literatura para que pudesse relacionar originais e suas
tradues em termos de sua essncia estvel", tarefa essa que
Holmes considera "enorme" e que lhe sugere o sistema de
classificao lineano, tambm imaginado por Steiner como um
modelo ideal para os estudos da traduo:
