of sexual harassment and assault are
speaking out and nally people are
listening. The latest restorm exploded
Oct. 29, as out actor Anthony Rapp told
the world that Oscar-winning actor Kevin
Spacey had tried to seduce him when
Rapp was 14 years old. The Star Trek:
Discovery actor, now 46, told Buzzfeed
that he had been inspired to come

D.C. loses bid for 2022 Gay Games

over nations capital
and Guadalajara

The Federation of Gay Games on Monday
announced it has selected Hong Kong over
D.C. and Guadalajara, Mexico, to host the 2022
Gay Games, the quadrennial international
LGBT sports event thats expected to attract
as many as 15,000 athletes and thousands
more spectators to the host city.
The announcement came at a news
conference in Paris during the annual
General Assembly of the Federation of Gay
Games, the U.S.-based group that organizes
the Gay Games and selects the host city.
It took place two days after the FGGs Site
Selection Committee heard nal presentations
from representatives of the bid committees
from D.C., Hong Kong and Guadalajara.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C.s Gay
Games Bid Committee Chair Brent Minor
were among six members of the D.C. bid
committee that delivered the presentation
on Saturday. They were part of a 32-member
Mayor MURIEL BOWSER led the D.C. Gay Games delegation to Paris this
week.

of conversion therapy, Brinton has
spearheaded eorts to submit legislation
and promote public education in the
hopes of ending the practice on minors.
The campaign has been featured in
numerous mainstream media outlets.

public policy. He received two graduate
degrees from the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology in Nuclear Engineering and the Technology Policy Program. He
served as a policy analyst, fellow and director of government aairs focused
on nuclear energy at a number of think tanks and energy organizations. He has
authored legislation and briefed members of Congress and presidents including
Obama and Trump on nuclear physics.
Brinton makes his home in Washington, is an avid singer with the Gay Mens
Chorus of Washington and is engaged to Kevin Rieck.
Congratulations also to Joe Sangirardi who has started his new position as
associate director for leadership giving with the Human Rights Campaign. He will
advance HRCs Leadership Giving program consisting of top donors investing
in all areas of HRCs work, including HRCs new initiative, HRC Rising. Working
with senior leadership, Sangirardi will manage the discovery, cultivation, and
stewardship of individuals investing in the nations largest LGBT rights advocacy
organization at a pivotal time for the LGBT community. Upon accepting the
position Joe said, Financial resources are an instrumental catalyst for advancing
pro-LGBTQ policies. I cannot overstate the impact HRC will have on all LGBTQ
Americans in the coming elections. The more support HRC receives, the greater
advancement well see. With the help of equality-voters, HRC can swing elections
across the country and make sure Americas increasingly pro-equality sentiments
are reected in our federal government. Thats why Im so excited to join HRCs
eorts.
Prior to joining HRC, he was director of development for the Gay & Lesbian
Victory Fund and Institute. He worked there for a number of years in dierent
roles, including Director of Major Gifts and Regional Development Director. He
has also worked for the Presidents Associates, University of Oklahoma. He is a
former board member of Aspiring Americans Initiative.
June of 2014 inside a house at 1846 8th St.,
N.E. that was owned by Neals grandmother
and in which Neal, Young, Wingeld and other roommates resided at various times.
Youngs nude body was discovered June 12, 2014 by one of Neals relatives in the attic
of the house under an air mattress with a plastic bag placed over his head. The relative
had entered the house to conduct routine maintenance work after Neal ed to Florida,
police and prosecutors said. The relative, an uncle, immediately called police.
Four days later police returned to the house and found Wingelds body in a shallow
grave in the backyard. Police searched for the body after one of Wingelds family
members reported him missing and said he had been living with Neal. Authorities said
the badly decomposed body was naked except for a pair of socks.
Police charging documents say Neal used Youngs car to drive to Florida sometime
after the murders and used Youngs credit card to pay for gas and lodging before
returning to D.C. after running out of money. Charging documents say his grandmother
sent him money to pay for his trip home.
During the trial, Neals lawyers argued that Neal killed Young in self-defense after
Young lunged at him with a knife in a jealous rage after Young confessed to having
killed Wingeld. The lawyers argued that the murders were the result of a love triangle
gone bad among the three men. They said Young, who had been romantically involved
with Neal, became outranged after discovering that Neal was switching his romantic
interests toward Wingeld.
Prosecutors, however, presented evidence from the citys medical examiner that
autopsies showed that Young had been struck at least 26 times in the head with an object
that appeared to be a hammer, crushing his skull in multiple places. Prosecutors said the
autopsy appeared to show that Young had been struck while in a prone position, most likely
in bed, which they said disproved Neals claim that Young was attacking him with a knife.
Upon his return to D.C. from Florida, Neal told police he used a hammer to defend
himself against Young, saying he thought he hit Young three or four times.
The medical examiner testied that Wingelds head also had been struck multiple
times with an object that prosecutors said was a hammer.
Prosecutors disputed the defense claim that Neal killed Young in self-defense, arguing
that the motive was unclear but most likely due to disputes over money needed to pay
the expenses for the house. They speculated that Neal killed one of the two roommates
over an argument and killed the other because he witnessed the rst murder.
In a sentencing memorandum prosecutors asked Judge Morin to sentence Neal to
90 years in prison, saying the jury found the governments evidence proved beyond
a reasonable doubt that Neal acted with the specic intent to kill Mr. Young and Mr.
Wingeld, and that he acted with premeditation and deliberation.

Suspects plead not guilty to Nov. 2016 anti-LGBT assault

Three male suspects pled not guilty
in D.C. Superior Court on Tuesday to a
charge of hate-motivated aggravated
assault for a November 2016 incident in
which police say the suspects repeatedly
punched and kicked a male victim in the
head outside a carryout pizzeria near two
gay bars.
A police charging document says the
assault, in which the victim was knocked
unconscious and taken by ambulance to
a nearby hospital, took place after one of
the attackers stated, I dont like them gay
motherfuckers.
In the nearly one year since the
incident took place neither D.C. police nor
an LGBT police advisory committee called
the Violence Prevention and Response
Team, or VPART, publicly disclosed to the
community that the attack occurred.
The Washington Blade learned about
the incident at an Oct. 25 community
meeting organized by the D.C. Oce
of the United States Attorney in which
newly appointed U.S. Attorney Jessie K.
Liu mentioned that the attack was one
of three currently pending hate crimes
cases being prosecuted by her oce.
At the Washington Blades request,
aides to Liu provided the Blade with
details of the case, including the names
of the men charged in the attack, all of
which are part of the public record.
The police charging document says
the attack took place about 4 a.m. on
Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, at the northeast
corner of 8th Street and Florida Avenue,
N.W. in front of Jumbo Slice pizzeria,
which is located next door to the gay
nightclub Town Danceboutique and one
block from the gay sports bar Nellies.
Both clubs close at 3 a.m. on weekends,
and the charging document doesnt say
where the victim had been immediately
prior to the attack.
According to the charging document, at
least four witnesses observed the attack
and gave police a description of the
attackers. After broadcasting a lookout
based on descriptions provided by the
witnesses, police located the suspects
a few blocks away and placed them
under arrest when one of the witnesses
positively identied them, the charging
document says.
Court records identify the suspects,
now listed as defendants, as Derrick
Diggs, 28, of Clinton, Md.; Francisco Flores,
22, of Arlington, Va.; and Juan Vanegas,
U.S. Attorney JESSIE K. LIU provided details on an anti-LGBT assault.
27, of Alexandria, Va. Police charged all
three with aggravated assaulthate/bias
related based on the victims status or
perceived status as an LGBT person.
Court records show the three were
released on their own recognizance
a short time after their arrest while
awaiting trial. For reasons unclear in the
public court records, a delay in the case
that exceeded a deadline under the citys
speedy trial law resulted in the charges
against the men being dismissed without
prejudice on Oct. 5, 2017.
The court records show that two weeks
later, on Oct. 17, the case was reopened
and at the request of prosecutors with the
U.S. Attorneys Oce, a Superior Court
Grand Jury indicted the three men on the
same charge that had been dismissed
aggravated assault-knowingly along
with the classication as a hate crime.
The indictment states the criminal
act demonstrated the prejudice of the
three defendants based on the actual or
perceived sexual orientation and/or gender
identity and expression of the victim.
The charging documents identify
the victim by a male name but dont
say whether he identies as gay or
transgender. The Blade has a policy of
not identifying crime victims without their
permission to do so. The victim couldnt
immediately be reached for comment.
During Tuesdays court arraignment,
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bianca Forde, the
lead prosecutor in the case, disclosed
that her oce extended a plea bargain
oer to the three defendants, who had
yet to respond to the oer. She did not
disclose the terms of the plea oer.
Defense attorney Charles Murdter,
who represents defendant Flores, said
he and the attorneys representing the
other two defendants would have no
immediate comment.
The charging document was led in
court at the time of the three defendants
arrest last November. It says the incident
started when the victim overheard one of
the suspects make the anti-gay comment
inside Jumbo Slice pizzeria and asked him
what he said.
The charging document says one of
the men involved in the attack, whos
listed as Suspect 3, replied by saying you
have ve seconds to get out of here. It & Response Team (VPART) is to address,
says Defendant 3 then pushed the victim,
causing a scue that spilled outside onto
the sidewalk.
Witness 1 stated once all parties were
outside Defendant 1, Defendant 2, and
Defendant 3 were all striking Victim 1 in
the head, which caused him to fall to the
ground, the charging document says.
Witness 1 continued on to say once
Victim 1 was on the ground Defendant 3
got on top of him and continued to punch
him in the head. Witness 1 also stated that
Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 stomped
Victim 1 in the face several times while he
was on the ground, the document says.
The document says a similar account
was given to police by three other
witnesses. It says that when police arrived
on the scene the victim was unconscious
and bleeding from the head. It says that
when a police detective visited the victim
in the hospital at around 9 a.m. on the

same day the victim was awaiting results
of a CT Scan test and had no recollection
of how he got there or where he was; he
thought he was in Maryland.
Superior Court Judge Marisa J. Demeo,
whos presiding over the case, renewed an
earlier court order prohibiting the three
defendants from coming into contact
with the victim or in any way attempting
to communicate with him, including on
social media. She scheduled a follow-up
status hearing for the case on Nov. 21.
When the LGBT VPART committee
was created by former D.C. Police Chief
Kathy Lanier members were told that
information provided to the panel had
to remain condential and could not be
publicly released. In past years some
VPART members, including D.C. LGBT
Center director David Mariner, objected
to the condentiality requirement,
saying that the LGBT community should
be informed of anti-LGBT hate crimes
or other crimes targeting LGBT people
disclosed by police to VPART as long as
sensitive information relating to ongoing
investigations remained condential.
All reported crimes that occur in the
city as well as arrests made by police are
part of the citys and the court systems
public record. Police have said that
although they routinely announce the
occurrence of serious crimes such as
homicides through news releases, they
dont routinely announce instances of
less serious crimes such as assaults
unless contacted by members of the
media about a specic incident.
A statement on the D.C. government
website says Sheila Alexander-Reid,
director of the Mayors Oce of LGBTQ
Aairs, currently oversees VPART, which
meets monthly at the LGBTQ Aairs Oce.
The mission of the Violence Prevention
reduce and prevent crime within and
against the LGBT community in the
District of Columbia, the statement says.

and the government which enables us
to focus on coordinating a community
response to violence, it says.
Through this partnership, we are able
to eectively respond to instances of
violence, create awareness and educate

available resources, leverage resources

In response to an inquiry by the Blade
earlier this year Alexander-Reid said
she didnt have the authority to disclose
specic instances of anti-LGBT crimes that
police disclose to VPART, saying police
would have to disclose that information
as they deem appropriate.

Judge blocks Trump from enforcing trans military ban

A federal judge in D.C. has blocked
President Trumps ban on transgender
military service as litigation against it
moves through the judiciary, allowing
transgender troops currently serving in
the armed forces to breath a sigh of relief.
In a 76-page decision, U.S. District
Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, a Clinton
appointee, restores the military policy
on transgender troops before Trumps
directive under the likely assumption his
action violates the right to due process
under the Fifth Amendment.
The court nds that a number of
factors including the sheer breadth of
the exclusion ordered by the directives,
the unusual circumstances surrounding
the presidents announcement of them,
the fact that the reasons given for them
do not appear to be supported by any
facts, and the recent rejection of those
reasons by the military itself strongly
suggest that plaintis Fifth Amendment
claim is meritorious, Kollar-Kotelly writes.

A federal prosecutor assigned by U.S.
Attorney General Je Sessions to investigate
the March 2016 murder of an Iowa teenager
as a possible anti-transgender hate crime
revealed in a motion led in court last week
that one of the two men charged in the case
solicited the victim for sex and appeared
to have targeted the teen because of his
gender identity.
Kedarie Johnson, 16, whose mother says
he identied as a gender uid male who another part of town, dumped him in an
sometimes presented as a woman, was
found shot to death in an alley in Burlington,
Iowa, hours after he was last seen by a friend
while dressed as a woman, according to a
document led in court by federal prosecutor
Christopher Perras, who specializes in civil
rights and hate crimes cases.
Perras led the document in the form
of a pre-trial motion shortly before the
start of the trial in a county court in
Center for Lesbian Rights and GLBTQ
Advocates & Defenders on behalf of
current and aspiring transgender service
members.
Shannon Minter, legal director for the
National Center for Lesbian Rights, said
in a statement the ruling is a complete
victory for transgender service members
who are now once again able to serve
on equal terms and without the threat of
being discharged.
We are grateful to the court for
recognizing the gravity of these issues
and putting a stop to this dangerous
policy, which has wreaked havoc in the
lives of transgender service members
and their families, Minter added.
The preliminary injunction restores the
militarys policy on transgender troops to
the policy as set out in the memo Defense
Secretary James Mattis issued June 30.
That memo allowed openly transgender
people in the military to continue to serve
without fear of discharge, but continued
until at least Jan. 1 a ban on enlistments
of openly transgender people in the
armed forces pending a new review.
Trump overturned the Mattis memo
shortly afterward, rst announcing via
Twitter in July hed ban transgender
people form the armed forces in any
capacity, then issuing a memo to the
Pentagon in August to implement a ban
on transgender military service.

biologically male; became enraged; and
then, over the next hour, suocated
Kedarie by stung a rag down his throat
and wrapping a plastic bag around his
head, threw him in their car, drove to
plastic bag placed over his head and while
alley, and shot him several times until he
bled to death, Perras motion states.
Perras reiterated that scenario in his
opening arguments at Sanders-Galvezs
trial on Oct. 26.

A federal judge has blocked enforcement of

nightclub as a hate crime.

Several incendiary devices where thrown at a gay club in Puerto Rico last weekend.
El Vocero, a Puerto Rican newspaper, reported several individuals who were dressed
in black threw incendiary devices at Circo Bar which is located in the Santurce
neighborhood of the U.S. commonwealths capital of San Juan at around 7:30 p.m.
on Saturday.
El Vocero reported the devices did not cause signicant damage to the club. A police
spokesperson told the newspaper that no arrests have been made and the motive
behind the attack remains unclear.
Pedro Julio Serrano, founder of Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, a Puerto Rican LGBT advocacy
group, on Sunday urged authorities to investigate whether the attack was a hate crime.
The attack took place less than six weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico.
More than 70 percent of the islands 3.4 million residents remain without electricity.
Roughly 20 percent of Puerto Ricans still do not have access to running water.
San Juan Mayor Carmen Yuln Cruz who supports LGBT rights in the U.S.

Governor Ricardo Rossell on Sunday urged the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority

Egyptian lawmakers introduce
LGBT criminalization bill
Lawmakers in Egypt last week introduced a bill that would criminalize the countrys
LGBT community.
A translated copy of the measure the Washington Blade obtained states any two
individuals or more, whether male or female, who conduct perverted sexual relations
between themselves in any public or private place will each be arrested and sentenced
to a period of no less than one year and no more than three years.
Those who are found guilty of violating the proposed law more than once would face
up to ve years in prison.
The bill states those who incite same sex relations, either by inciting, facilitating,
hosting or calling for (them), even if they dont perform the act itself, will be sentenced
to prison for a period of no less than one year and no more than three years, as well
as shutting down the venue. Those who are found guilty of repeatedly violating this

provision of the proposed law would face up to ve years in prison.
The proposal also states audio and video publicity and advertising for LGBTQ parties
or gatherings are strictly prohibited on visual, audio and social medias.
In case of such violation, the host and promoter will face up to three years in prison,
it reads. In case of holding a party or a gathering, the organizers and all participants will
be sentenced to three years of prison, even if they were normal individuals. If the host
was an entity, their legal representative will be put in prison, as well as shutting down
both the entity and venue.
The measure would also strictly prohibit anyone from carrying any symbol or sign
of the LGBTQ community, as well as prohibiting the production, selling, marketing or
promotion of such products. Those who violate this provision would face between 1-3
years in prison.
@Egaypt, an Egyptian LGBT rights advocate in D.C. who uses his Twitter account to
identify himself, told the Blade on Thursday it remains unclear when lawmakers will
debate the measure.
It could be voted on within a week or months, said @Egaypt. But either way its
terrifying as it sets a new trend that could (and will) spread to other countries in the
region that are socially homophobic, but have no anti-LGBTQ laws.
@Egaypt lawmakers in Jordan, Iraq and Libya could consider similar measures if the
Egyptian bill becomes law.

Senate unanimously approves
Chechnya resolution
The U.S. Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution that
condemns the ongoing crackdown against LGBT people in Chechnya.
U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduced the
resolution earlier this year. The U.S. House of Representatives in June
unanimously approved a nearly identical resolution that U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-
Lehtinen (R-Fla.) introduced.
With unanimous passage of this resolution, the U.S. Senate just sent a
powerful message, said Human Rights Campaign Global Director Ty Cobb in a
press release.
Chechnya is a semi-autonomous Russian republic in the North Caucasus.
Novaya Gazeta, an independent Russian newspaper, in April reported
Chechen authorities have arrested more than 100 men because of their sexual
orientation or perceived sexual orientation since the beginning of the year.
Novaya Gazeta reported at least three of these men died after their arrest, while
others have been beaten and tortured and sent to secret prisons. Chechen authorities
have also reportedly begun to target women who they suspect are lesbians.
The Kremlin has claimed it has launched an investigation into the allegations,
even though Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought to downplay or even
dismiss these reports. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, who is a close Putin
ally, over the summer described the allegations as nonsense and claimed
during an interview with HBOs Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel thatwe dont
have any gays in his republic.
The State Department told the Washington Blade in September that Secretary
of State Rex Tillerson expressed concern about the ongoing crackdown in a
letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The Human Rights Campaign on Oct. 18 led a Freedom of Information Act
request with the State Department for all records relating to Tillersons letter
to Lavrov. A State Department spokesperson told the Blade last week it does not
comment on FOIA requests.
President Trump has yet to publicly condemn the crackdown.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley in April said the U.S. is disturbed by
the situation in Chechnya.
Hillary Clinton on Saturday specically referenced Chechnya during her speech
at the HRC National Dinner in D.C. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,
French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders have also condemned
the crackdown.

police report Oct. 27, accusing Grasham

friend, actor Corey Haim, when Haim was

Hong Kong wins bid to host 2022 Gay Games

The news conference announcing the
selection of the host city for the 2022 Gay
Games was held immediately prior to a
gala dinner hosted by Paris Mayor Anne
Hidalgo, whose city will be hosting the
2018 Gay Games.
The FGGs decision on Monday came
eight years after it passed over bids by
D.C. and Boston in 2009 to host the 2014
Gay Games and instead chose Cleveland.
At the time the FGG said Cleveland, D.C.
and Boston were equally qualied to host
the Gay Games from the standpoint of
infrastructure, nancing and support from
the governments of their respective cities.
Cleveland was ultimately chosen,
FGG ocials said, because it and its
surrounding jurisdictions in Ohio were
less advanced in LGBT rights than Boston
and D.C. They said holding the Gay
Games in Cleveland would have a greater
impact on one of the games objectives
to advance LGBT rights in places where

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring
on Monday said the charges led against
President Trumps former campaign
manager and an associate as very serious.
The indictments are very serious and
indicate the investigation has gotten to a
new level, Herring told the Washington
Blade during a telephone interview.
Herring spoke with the Blade a few
hours after special counsel Robert
Mueller unsealed indictments against
Paul Manafort and Rick Gates for alleged
tax evasion and money laundering.
The charges are not directly related
to Trumps presidential campaign or
Russias interference in the 2016 election.
George Papadopoulos, who advised the
Trump campaign on foreign policy, on Oct.
5 pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about
his contacts with Russians who claimed
they had information about Hillary Clinton.
The plea agreement in which he agreed
to cooperate with Muellers investigation
was unsealed on Monday.
Americans deserve to know
what happened here with Russian
involvement in the election, Herring told
advancement was needed.
The FGG in February of this year
named D.C., Hong Kong and Guadalajara
as nalists among more than a dozen
cities that initially submitted bids to
host the 2022 Gay Games. In June, the
FGGs Site Selection Committee visited
the three cities to inspect playing elds
and other venues where more than two-
dozen sporting events would be held as
part of the Gay Games.
Each of the three nalist cities earlier this
year submitted written bid proposals several
hundred pages long citing what they asserted
were the advantages of their respective cities.
Each pointed out that their respective
cities have a long record of hosting large
events like conventions and sporting
competitions. The bids submitted by
the three cities each asserted that they
have the infrastructure and community
support to host dozens of individual
sporting events ranging from soccer and
swimming to tennis and rowing.
Observers speculated that if the
FGG decision makers viewed the three
cities as being equally qualied from a

because he did not think U.S. Attorney

senator from Loudoun County spoke
with the Blade eight days before he will
face o against Republican John Adams.
Herring announced shortly after he
took oce in 2014 that he would no
longer defend Virginias constitutional
amendment that denes marriage as
between a man and a woman. He later
technical and infrastructure standpoint
they might look toward other factors that
could favor Hong Kong and Guadalajara
over D.C. If selected, for example, Hong
Kong would represent the rst time the
Gay Games were held in Asia. Similarly,
Guadalajara would be the rst city ever in
Latin America to host the games.
Another factor considered a possible
disadvantage for D.C. was the election
last year of Donald Trump as U.S.
president. Large numbers of athletes and
spectators expected to attend the Gay
Games come from Europe, where Trump
has emerged as a highly disliked gure.
The local D.C. government, which
played a lead role in preparing the citys bid
for the Gay Games, is run independently
from the federal government and the
White House by locally elected ocials
who have been highly critical of Trump.
But some sources familiar with the Gay
Games speculated that the FGG might
have worried that the dislike for Trump
would result in fewer people attending
the Gay Games in Washington if Trump
were still president in 2022.

decision to end the Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals program that allows
young undocumented immigrants to
remain in the U.S. and obtain work
permits. Herring and 19 other attorneys
general on Monday led an amicus
brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in
the case of a gay couple who argues
they have the right under Colorados
nondiscrimination law to purchase a
wedding cake from a Christian baker in
spite of his religious beliefs.
Anti-discrimination laws in the
commercial marketplace ensure
equal access to goods and services
and protections against the harms of
discrimination, Herring told the Blade.
Those are protections for everyone.
Adams has repeatedly attacked Herring
over his support of marriage rights for
same-sex couples in Virginia.

The Republican in 2016 told members
of the Virginia Beach Tea Party the
state House of Delegates should have
impeached Herring after announcing
he would no longer defend Virginias
marriage amendment. An Adams
campaign ad that features Schall and
Townley and their daughter at a press
conference with Herring is currently
airing on D.C. television stations.
Herring told the Blade that Adams
doesnt accept as valid the U.S. Supreme
Court ruling in the Obergefell case that
extended marriage rights to same-sex
couples across the country.
It goes beyond his personal belief
that same-sex couples should be marry,
said Herring.
Marriage equality is the right thing for
Virginians and their families, he added.
Herring also told the Blade that Danica
Roem, who is challenging state Del.
Bob Marshall (R-Prince William County),
is a great candidate who will be a
fantastic member of the Virginia House
of Delegates.
Roem, a former journalist, would
become the rst openly transgender
person seated in any state legislature in
the country if she were to beat the Prince
William County Republican. Marshall, who
is among the most outspoken opponents
of LGBT rights in the General Assembly,
has repeatedly attacked Roem over her
gender identity throughout the campaign.

southeast Michigan report an increase in cases among men who are sexually

There have been 11 such cases so far in October, compared to a total of 10
over the preceding 14 months, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services said that there have
been more than 450 conrmed cases of hepatitis A in the city of Detroit and
Ingham, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair,
Washtenaw and Wayne counties since August 2016. About 85 percent of those
cases involved hospitalizations. But more than 95 percent of cases specically
among men sexually active with men involved hospitalizations, the AP reports.
We are seeing a large person-to-person transmission. Its not that we have
one particular food source or one specic drug, linking all the cases, said Angela
Minicuci, a spokeswoman for the department, according to the AP.
The department said that hepatitis A attacks the liver and causes symptoms
such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark urine, clay-colored
stool, fever, chills and jaundice. Time from exposure to onset of illness is usually
15-50 days, and the illness typically lasts several weeks to months.

Religious beliefs impact LGBT medical care

survey said they felt unprepared to treat gay patients and some indicated

70 in California, representing 0.35 percent of the states adult noninstitutionalized
population. Their general health status, insurance, and health access, are similar

Roem for Va. House of Delegates
An impressive
candidate committed to
constituent service
PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights
and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.
There is an important race for state del-
egate in Virginias District 13. It pits Repub-
lican Bob Marshall, a bigoted, homopho-
bic longtime delegate, against a Democrat
who is an intelligent young woman who
happens to be transgender. Danica Roem
is an impressive candidate with a compre-
hensive and impressive knowledge of her
District, Virginia government, and a com-
mitment to the people she grew up with
and hopes to serve. While Danica has her
work cut out for her to defeat Marshall it is
fair to say not only Virginia but the country
will be better o if she does.
A Mother Jones column by Ashley De-
jean described Marshall this way, Mar-
shall, a delegate since 1992, was the au-
thor of the amendment that enshrined
discrimination into the states constitu-
tion in 2006, by dening marriage as be-
ing between one man and one woman.
And when he ran, unsuccessfully, for US
Congress in 2014, he was described by
the Atlantic as basically the culture wars
four-star general a prole he contin-
ues to live up to. In January, he introduced
what LGBT advocates described as one of
the most dangerous bathroom bills in the
country. It turns out the proposal crossed
a line even for the very right leaning Vir-
ginia Republicans and they killed the bill.
It is not only the LGBT community Mar-
shall has insulted and hurt with his leg-
islative initiatives and comments. In the
same Atlantic column there was a com-
pilation of some of the most outrageous
things Marshall has said. According to
an interview in the Washington Times,
he regrets none of his comments. Those
comments include remarks on disabled
children (they can be Gods punishment
to women who have had abortions), in-
cest (sometimes, its voluntary), and
the Supreme Court (Justice Kennedy is
probably a homosexual). When asked
about those controversial remarks, the
candidate said, I dont care. I mean, if I
say something in public, I say it in public.
Its the voters in the 13th District who
have the chance to put an end to Marshalls
hate-lled political career. Many Republi-
cans in Prince William County and Manas-
sas Park who Marshall represents are say-
ing privately they are embarrassed by what
he says and does. This year they have the
opportunity to prove with their votes they
are ready for change. They can show Prince
William County and Manassas Park have
grown and no longer will allow Marshall
and the hate he spews to represent them.
Roem, the Democrat, is a lifelong resident
of Prince William County. She knows the lo-
cal issues backwards and forwards having
written about them as a reporter for the
Prince William Times for nine years. She un-
derstands one of the major issues for the
county is transportation having reported on
all the issues from I-66 to routes 15,28,29,55,

and 234 as well as the Bi-County Parkway.
Wherever she campaigns she repeats
her commitment to focus on nally get-
ting Route 28 xed. She also understands
what it would mean to Manassas if the
VRE is extended; if downtown oce space
in Manassas Park would be rented and In-
novation Park built up. These are all issues
Marshall hasnt bothered to deal with.
Danica is a stepmom and both under-
stands and is passionate about education
issues. She supports higher pay for teach-
ers because she wants every child to have
a qualied, caring teacher in their class-
room and knows to make that happen Vir-
ginia must be able to attract those teach-
ers and then keep them in the state and
the classrooms of Prince William County.
Danica is transgender but that isnt the
reason most of her supporters are work-
ing hard to elect her. Being transgender is
a part of her life that has made her more
open to all people. It has given her more
of an insight than some of us may have
into how people who others may see as
dierent must cope and relate to their
community. That knowledge has made
her a stronger person. She is a strong
supporter of the Dream Act, civil rights,
disability rights, LGBT equality, womens
rights and economic equality. She under-
stands what it would mean to guarantee
workers a livable minimum wage and af-
fordable and accessible healthcare.
Danica Roem is the real thing. A strong,
intelligent woman who will ght for the
residents and families of Prince William
County. She is committed to making a dif-
ference for the people she grew up with
and to making Prince William County an
even more vibrant and growing commu-
nity known as a place welcoming to all.

Apathy helps the know-nothing party
Lets get real: only one
party imperils the country

Political parties change over time. Repub-
licans, for instance, have become the Know-
Nothing Party, in which traditional conserva-
tives who display insucient nativist rage or
fail to chase after 45s every juvenile whim
are treated as weaklings unt to govern.
Democrats, on the other hand, have grown
in 60 years from the home of the segrega-
tionist South into a party of inclusion.
To minimize the parties dierences is
to miss by a mile what is happening. The
comparison between last years political in-
surgents Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders
does not withstand scrutiny. More impor-
tant, progressive proposals, whatever one
thinks of them, are mild compared to the
broad array of aggressive harms already
begun by the Trumpists. Finally, the far left
wields much less inuence than the far right.
Trump won the nomination and the gen-
eral election. He tapped white nationalist rage.

Sex work: Lets stick to the facts
Council members should
undo outdated laws

Almost a decade ago, GLAA came out in
forceful opposition to the criminalization of
sex work in the District of Columbia with a
statement declaring that, our societys ad-
diction to legislating morality is the chief
obstacle to eliminating the harm caused
by anti-prostitution and anti-solicitation
laws. Over the years, we have continued
to learn from HIPS and other organizations
advocating for sex work decriminalization
including the United Nations Programme
on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UN Women, World
Health Organization, and Global Alliance
Against Tracking in Women.
As a member of D.C.s Sex Worker Ad-
vocates Coalition (SWAC), GLAA supports
Council member David Grossos Reducing
Criminalization to Promote Public Safety and
Health Amendment Act of 2017. We urge
D.C. Council members to abandon sancti-
monious platitudes and instead acknowl-
edge the extensively documented harms of
His main goal was erasing everything Barack
Obama touched, regardless of merit. Trump
is disinclined to study issues or heed experts.
He has a baseless condence in his own bril-
liance. His proposals are all over the map, and
he has revealed his promises to be worthless.
Sanders made an impressive run, but lost
the nomination. He tapped working class
frustration, but did not build a campaign on
racism. He pushed a socialist program, which
is a coherent economic vision whether or not
one thinks it workable or suciently popular.
Single Payer is based not on resentment but
a desire for universal healthcare. Sanders
did rage against big bankers and corporate
greed, but his complaints were better found-
ed even if his remedies were unconvincing
and their path to enactment not evident.
The Trumpists support voter suppres-
sion, environmental degradation, crippling
public education, selling o national monu-
ments, ramping up military spending while
knee-capping diplomacy, ending womens
reproductive choice, taking healthcare
from millions out of spite, attacking immi-
grant families, and giving a tax windfall to
corporations at everyone elses expense
while lying about it. There is no similar vi-
cious catalog to lay at progressives feet.
Only a prior determination to see no dif-
ference between left and right could lead
to that conclusion. The far rights inuence
is all too apparent. I myself have criticized
the totalitarian tendencies of some on the
criminalizing sex work. Data shows that the
enforcement of sex work laws disproportion-
ately impacts communities of color, gay and
transgender people, people with disabilities,
immigrants, and people with criminal con-
victions. Furthermore, a growing body of
research indicates that the criminalization
of sex work leads to sex workers facing ex-
treme stigma, systematic exclusion, violence
and discrimination. These challenges create
an environment in which individuals trading
sex have diculty accessing health services
and information, experience various human
rights abuses, and decline to seek protection
from the police even when in grave danger.
Dismantling these systems of oppression
and discrimination will require our elected
ocials to lead by example they must be
willing to learn and demonstrate political cour-
age and compassion toward some of our citys
most marginalized and vulnerable residents.
GLAA believes that our elected ocials are
here to serve the people all the people
not just those with power and inuence, and
not only when it is politically convenient.
In 2016, Council member Jack Evans re-
sponded to GLAAs questionnaire for D.C.
Council candidates, and we celebrated him
far left, but they are largely impotent. Bar-
ring or shouting down disagreeable speak-
ers on college campuses and demanding
the exclusion of police and businesses
from Pride celebrations are obnoxious,
but amount to a renunciation of eective
public engagement. Those zealots are like
retiring conservative Senators Corker and
Flake, delivering rebukes as they conrm
their marginalization.
If leftist radicals controlled the Democrat-
ic Party, Tom Perez could not have purged
progressive dissenters from the DNC. De-
ecting attention from the mounting evi-
dence of the Trump campaigns collusion
with Russia, congressional Republicans
have launched another raft of investiga-
tions into debunked Hillary Clinton conspir-
acies. Sean Hannitys and Sebastian Gorkas
hysterical braying is not evidence, and will
not sway special counsel Robert Mueller.
Opinion polls can reveal public disaf-
fection, but cannot oer solutions. Of the
two major parties, one is not treasonous.
It is not trying to rule by stoking intoler-
ance and division. Its recent presidents
have presided over decit reductions.
Its legislators are far more supportive of
reproductive choice, diplomacy, environ-
mental protection, and a social safety net.
It is the Democratic Party, which oers the
only hope of thwarting the Republicans,
whose fervor boosts their electoral pros-
pects. Alternatively, Democratic inghting
(and many others) for being willing to pro-
vide alternatives to incarceration for margin-
alized and at-risk populations like homeless
youth and transgender people who resort
to sex work for survival. He wrote: I do not
support arresting or criminalizing individu-
als who have turned or been forced into
sex work for survival. We appreciated that
response, as it was consistent with policy
recommendations from reputable studies
and helped us visualize a District that did not
falsely conate sex work with sex tracking.
Given Council member Evans stated
position last year, we were saddened to
hear him reverse himself and come out
in opposition to sex work law reform ear-
lier this month on WMAL. We were further
saddened to hear him cite The Deuce, an
HBO TV show, to justify his opposition to
sex work law reform instead of relying upon
years of research and the lived experiences
of people who trade sex for survival.
In 2014, when GLAA asked Chairman
Phil Mendelson a similar question, he re-
sponded, For the many people who turn to
prostitution to survive, incarceration oers
no help in improving their lives or providing
alternatives to survival sex. But in recent

oers the best chance for entrenching
Trumpist autocracy.
The LGBT movement has made great
strides. The polls are on our side. But that
is true of many things the Republicans are
attacking. Protections for women, racial mi-
norities, and LGBT people, won mostly by
Democrats, are under renewed attack.
I understand frustration with politics.
My own activism has largely involved
nonpartisan advocacy. But swallowing
the lie of not a dimes worth of dier-
ence, while fanatics on one side blow
everything up, is as likely to end well as
knocking down your house and expecting
the Taj Mahal to spring up in its place.
The House and Senate leadership in
2019 will not be Greens or Independents.
If you vote that way or sit it out in 2018,
you are eectively voting Republican.
Please think better of it.

charges against Paul Manafort and Rick
Gates: We have a long ght ahead. Even if
Trump is forced from oce, his successor
could be worse. Democrats must start win-
ning elections. The right-wing lies and de-
ections will only escalate. Leftist purity will
not defeat them. Diversity and inclusion are
empty slogans without room for diversity
of opinion. Progressive concerns will gain
more traction in Democratic legislatures.

interviews, Mendelson has opposed Coun-
cil member Grossos bill, expressing con-
cerns on collateral crime associated with
sex work and the public nuisance it pres-
ents. As SWAC has pointed out, research
and the experiences of people trading sex
all show that these collateral crimes arise
from criminalizing sex work rather than
sex work itself, and that the best way to ad-
dress thesepublic health and safety issues
around sex work is to eliminate the related
criminal penalties. Furthermore, this bill
does not legalize prostitution, nor does it
aect existing laws pertaining to tracking
or crimes related to sex work.
It is time for the District to stop harming
people who trade sex work for survival with
these outdated prohibitions, and instead
focus our resources on major crimes. We
believe that many concerns expressed by
opponents would be alleviated during a
public hearing, and hope that our elected
ocials seize this opportunity to address
an ongoing injustice in our criminal system.

Pop wonder twins revisit
fth album with 10th anniversary tour

Tegan and Sara bring their acoustic tour,
a 10th-anniversary commemoration of
their breakthrough 2007 album The Con,
to new Washington venue the Anthem
next weekend. Sara, prepping for the sixth
concert of the tour, spoke with the Blade
by phone from Portland on Oct. 26.
WASHINGTON BLADE: Im told
Portland has a large lesbian population.
Are you aware of this?
SARA: I dont know exactly but, um,
weve spent a lot of time in Portland. We
actually made The Con, the record that
were touring on this anniversary, we
actually made it in Portland but besides
the lesbians who are in the band, we
didnt do a lot of socializing outside of the
studio (laughs). But I love Portland. Its a
beautiful sunny day and its a little cooler
than it was in California. I had a nice
breakfast and walked around and its just
a great town, I love it.
BLADE: Is this concept something
you might also do for other albums
when they turn 10 or is revisiting The
Con dierent? If so, why?
SARA: You know, I think, rst o, this
record is incredibly special and just purely
from a business perspective, you know,
it was a big step for us. We moved over
to Warner Brothers and there was a big
push behind the album. It was really well
received by the press and we saw our
audience grow quite a bit and we started
traveling more internationally. The reach
of the album was pretty substantial and
over the years, the record has been one
of those signature pieces where even
fans who discovered us on later albums
generally nd themselves back at The
Con and love the songs. I think its a really
cherished album within our community of
fans so it felt really appropriate to go out
and perform these songs again because
for so many people, a lot of our fans tell us,
We were too young to see the show the
rst time around, they were underage or
they had yet to discover us, so it felt like
the rst album in our discography that
felt like it had enough of an impact and
that people liked enough that we could go
out and do something like this. And then
to be able to tie it to the launch of our
foundation and be able to use it also as a
fundraiser to try to raise money for some
programming and grants we want to do
next year, to have those two elements
stitched together, that feels really special.
BLADE: Aside from being acoustic,
how is this tour dierent from the
original Con tour?
SARA: We didnt want to just go out
and do the album versions. We wanted to
strip things back and make it more of an
intimate show and allow for storytelling
and really improvised moments even
within the music itself. The songs are very
short. Even though there are 14 songs on
the The Con, the whole album is only like
34 minutes or something. So we actually
wanted to not feel completely beholden

Coming-out video went
viral; caused ripples in
Muslim world

Haaz Sleiman rose to prominence as
Mohammed Mo-Mo De La Cruz, the
sassy, gay, Muslim nurse on the Showtime
comedy series Nurse Jackie. While
Sleiman should have been relishing his
rst breakout role, he wasnt truly happy.
Sleiman was too busy being closeted
despite portraying a gay, Muslim
character on TV, the same role he was
living in real life.
That experience I didnt enjoy as much
as I think I should have, Sleiman, 41,
says. The creators were two lesbians
(Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem) and they
said, Oh Haaz, youre such a wonderful
actor. Youre a straight man with so much
compassion for this gay character and
we love you so much for that. And Im
looking at them like, God, I wanna tell
them, but Im afraid.
After he was told that Mo-Mo would no
longer be on the series, Sleiman worked
up the courage to speak his truth to his
family and the shows creators.
It was a really tough thing because
I thought I would get a lot of backlash
from the Muslim community. I was also
worried about what my parents were
going to say, Sleiman says.
While Sleiman came out privately, it
wasnt until this year that he decided to
publicly reveal his sexuality. Angered by
statistics that more LGBT people have
been murdered this year than in 2016,
Sleiman uploaded a video to his social
media accounts that went viral.
In the video, Sleiman tells the camera
directly that he is, a gay, Muslim, Arab-
American man. The actor got even more
open saying, Not only am I gay, but Im
also a bottom. Not only am I a bottom,
but Im also a total bottom, which means
I like it up you know where.
He concludes his message by
threatening anyone who tries to kill me
just because Im gay.
I might be gay and I might be a nice
guy, but dont get it twisted, because I will
fuck you up, Sleiman says in the video.
Sleiman says the video came from a
place of frustration with President Donald
Trump, hate groups like the KKK and the
high murder rates against LGBT people.

HAAZ SLEIMAN says its too early to tell how
coming out might aect his career. He got
mixed reactions from his family.
That coming-out video was so genuine.
Theres nothing in there to make it more
interesting or exciting. It was simply
coming from the heart, Sleiman says.
His mother and siblings have been
supportive. His father didnt take it well
and his extended family has not been
supportive, Sleiman says. Its too early to
gauge how being out might aect his career.
Now, he is funneling that frustration
into Mosaic Theaters Vicua & the
American Epilogue, written by Tony-
nominated playwright Jon Robin Baitz
and directed by Robert Egan.
Described as a Trump-inspired satire,
Vicua & The American Epilogue, tells
the story of an Iranian tailor, Anselem
(Brian George), and his apprentice, Amir
(Sleiman), who are making a custom
suit for a real-estate tycoon, based
on Trump, to wear for his upcoming
presidential debate.
This version also includes an
epilogue, set eight years in the future,
that examines the aftermath of the
presidents administration.
Its going to be a cathartic experience
but its going to be a good release, Sleiman
says. People will cry, people will feel hurt
somehow. People will feel represented,
heard or seen. Its so satisfying.
In 2018 hell be in the Michael Bay-
produced series Jack Ryan on Amazon.
Sleiman is also writing and producing
his rst feature lm. He plans to lm the
Arabic-language lm in Lebanon, he says.

Theres a common thread that runs
through all the teams in the LGBT sports
community of Washington community.
This week in the Blades All Star series, we
meet two gay basketball players who found
their community with the D.C. Sentinels.
The Sentinels host an open gym for
pick-up games up to two times per week
for players of all skill levels. For those

wishing to compete, they travel to three
tournaments per year under the National
Gay Basketball Association umbrella.
The Sentinels also run the Washington
D.C. Gay Basketball League which is open
for registration through Nov. 11. The
upcoming season will kick o Jan. 3.
Darien Smith found the Sentinels
through a Google search this past spring
and showed up at one of their open gyms.
Growing up in Clemson, S.C., he played
basketball and ran track in high school.
After a year at University of Miami, Smith
transferred to Clemson University to
nish up his undergraduate degree.
He is now a full-time student at
LOGOmotion, inc.

graduate degree in higher education with
a concentration in student aairs. His
decision to choose Maryland was based
on the quality of their program and a
desire to live in an urban area.
Shortly after joining the Sentinels, Smith
traveled with them to his rst tournament
in May at Coady Roundball Philadelphia.
It was my rst gay tournament and
the rst time in a sports atmosphere
where I didnt have to hide my true self. It
was empowering, Smith says. I thought
I was prepared because I played travel
ball and high school basketball when I
was younger, but the competitive level of
the tournament caught me o guard. It
was intense.
Smith traveled again with the
team when they competed at the
Minneapolis Classic in October and will
enter their league for the first time in
the upcoming season.
This has been fun, and I am enjoying
hanging out with my teammates and
getting in some exercise, Smith says. In
fact, I am loving it so much I have joined
the board as social outreach chair and I
look forward to planning our upcoming
functions such as the Christmas party.
Bryce Roth grew up in Oregon City,
Ore., and was focused mainly on soccer
playing two years JV and one year of varsity
in high school. He found himself gravitating Awards USB

Educated at Brown, Harvard, New Kelly Clarkson
and Johns Hopkins album is sonic departure

Despite all the buildup and hype,
Top 1% of Doctors in USA American Idol has yielded only a few
artists whove been able to sustain a
Dual Board Certified: successful, high-prole career in the

In the 15 years since she won the reality
show, Clarkson has delivered seven
smash albums, all of which made the top

sonic direction. Its followed by Heat, a

with her prior work. The gospel-
tinged Move You is a stunner, with a
spine-tingling vocal that is every bit as
magnicent as something Adele might
perform. The old-school soul-inspired
Cruel is another downtempo winner,

departure.
with Clarkson showing her breezy
versatility and range with eortless
panache. The album has a decidedly
modern sheen, but Clarkson does
explore retro inuences on several tracks,
particularly the dynamic Medicine which
channels mid-90s Mariah Carey. The
audaciously bold Whole Lotta Woman, a
fusion of Beyonce and Christina Aguilera,
is Clarkson embracing her new direction
with passion and ferocity.
One of the albums highlights is the
triumphant I Dont Think About You, a
stirring ballad that serves as Clarksons
declaration of independence. Its a piercing
track that seems directly aimed at those
at RCA who prodded her in directions
she did not want to go. She revels in her
freedom and proclaims she has nothing to
prove (and shes right). Clarkson ends the
album Get High, a ery rave-up that once
again speaks to her erce determination
to follow her own path.
Meaning of Life is a turning point in
Clarksons career. Now 35 and suddenly
able to pursue her own musical ambitions,
she has turned to a more mature and
sophisticated sound. The songs are still
catchy and theres little doubt she would
welcome massive commercial success,
but its clear she is no longer aiming just
for the youthful top 40 crowd. Clarkson
has become the artist she always wanted
to be. Her exuberance and condence
shine through this album from start to
nish, and its wonderful to hear. In a year
of largely disappointing high-prole pop
albums, Kelly Clarksons Meaning of Life
is a welcome exception.

Why is the gay community so
exclusionary when it comes to looks?
Im a 23-year-old gay man and Im
just not good-looking. Ive never had
a relationship and I cant get a date.
People look right through me when I go
out and at the gym. I put a prole online
and got nothing except some people
many decades older than me. Im feeling
hopeless and angry.
I want to believe that dierent people
have dierent taste and theres no one
standard of physical beauty but I just
dont seem to be what anyone is looking
for. I actually had a therapist whom I
went to see tell me I am a four out of 10.
That was really crushing.
I dont know what advice you can give
me. I really would like people to examine
the values of our community. It all seems
to be about looks and who is hot.
I have a lot to oer. I have a big heart,
Im smart and funny. I have an interesting
job and I volunteer at a dog rescue. I
would be a terric companion in life, but
no one is interested.
Michael replies:
Im sorry youre having such a rough time.
Yes, a lot of people in the gay
community put a lot of focus on looks.
Whether gay men do this more or less
than other men and other people in
general is anyones guess. But it is a
tremendous phenomenon.
And yes, there are certain ideals of
attractiveness among gay men that a lot
of us can never live up to. And those who
do, ultimately age out.

All of this can feel like a sort of tyranny.
If you dont meet strict and at times
unreal standards, you get turned down
for dates, are ignored when you try to
start a conversation and receive the
message, loud and clear, that you really
arent worthwhile.
But thats just the message from
some people.
Appearance is a funny thing. Contrary
to your therapists (former, I hope)
outlandish comment, looks really
are subjective. I also believe that our
personalities illuminate our appearance.
If you are the generous, kind and
thoughtful guy you describe and I have
no reason to doubt you then I have to
think that these qualities come across
when someone interacts with you.
Yes, a lot of guys are drawn just to the
surface. And those guys are likely not for you.
Its time to start looking beyond bars,
the gym and dating/hookup apps. You
need to interact with other gay men
in environments where they will have
opportunities to really know you, rather
than making judgments based on rst
impression of your looks alone.
How about some activities where youll
be doing something you care about
while also interacting with people you
might want to date? I imagine that youre
spending more time with dogs than
young gay men at the dog rescue.
Please dont drop doing what you
already enjoy and value, but consider
some additional activities. The D.C. Center
has a lengthy list of groups and sponsors
Center Volunteers, which would give you
more opportunities to do good while also
giving others the chance to know you on
a more profound level.
Yes, it would be great to change the
values of our community to be less
focused on outward appearance. Im
hoping your letter can help spark a
discussion about this issue.
But whether or not others start to
think about this issue dierently, you
have some work to do on yourself. For
you to feel better about who you are,
youre going to have grind a new pair of
lenses through which to see yourself.
This is a dicult task, but not impossible.
Your path forward is to challenge others
surface judgments and see the qualities
you know you possess when you look in
the mirror.

When we rst meet Peter Pan, hes
dressed in a black hooded cloak visiting
the grave of his beloved sister Tinkerbell.
But the mournful mood doesnt last.
Peter soon learns that the girl lives on
as a mischievous fairy, and high-ying
adventures ensue. This opening sets the
tone for The Adventures of Peter Pan,
Synetic Theaters adaptation of J.M. Barries
beloved play and novel. Theirs is a darkish
mix of humor, fun, danger and adventure.
Synetic is celebrated for silent,
movement-based interpretations of
classics ranging from Shakespeare to Oscar
Wilde. Their productions showcase the
companys innovative staging and ashes
of inspired, kinetic choreography. Directed
and choreographed by company founders
Paata Tsikurishvili and Irina Tsikurishvili,
respectively, Synetics Peter Pan isnt
silent. In fact, theres lots of dialogue and
breakout dance numbers in addition to
the usual movement-based storytelling.
Its a bit of a departure from the companys
more tried-and-true formula.
Adapted by Ed Monk, the script follows
the familiar story line. Searching for his
shadow, Peter (Alex Mills) meets the
Darling children, Wendy (Kathy Gordon),
John (Thomas Beheler) and Michael (Scott
Whalen). Peter teaches them to y and
they accompany him back to Neverland
where they join the lost kids, a band of
fun loving orphaned children (all played
by adult actors) dedicated to never
growing up and battling a crew of pirates
headed by vainglorious Captain Hook.
The magic and suspension of belief
central to the Peter Pan story lends itself
to some incredible staging including ying
in a starry night sky and swimming with
mermaids in blue, wavy water. These
scenes are highlights. Another highlight

dancer who plays Peters shadow.

a boyish, but nuanced take on the title
character. Mills career includes many
Synetic productions as well as work in
numerous straight plays. He played the part
of Alan, the young gay model in Michael
Kahns production of Torch Song Trilogy at
Studio Theatre several seasons ago.
Ryan Sellers Captain Hook is
wonderfully self-important. With long hair
and head scarf, Sellers gives a visual nod
to Johnny Depps Captain Jack Sparrow
from the Pirates of Caribbean franchise.
And the big-bellied Smee (Nathan
Weinberger who is hiding an exercise ball
beneath his horizontally striped pirate
shirt) is amusing as Hooks fawning ack
whod t well in contemporary politics.
Gordon gives an appealing
performance as Wendy, the young girl
who temporarily acts as mother gure for
the lost kids before returning to her own
mother at home. And as mute Tinkerbell,
Ana Tsikurishvili is a delightful whirling
dervish of naughty antics. Her enchanting
fairy tutu is magically lit by costume
designer Kendra Rai.

to the original recordings and wanted to
be a little more exible on the tour itself.
So were playing them a bit more sparsely
and weve slightly adjusted some of the
arrangements, made some songs longer,
changed keys, slowed things down, but
the important thing for me was that none
of the songs start and people go, What is
this? We wanted it to be recognizable as
the original song, just not boxed in to the
way we recorded them.
BLADE: Are you playing the album
through sequentially? What else are
you playing?
SARA: Yeah, we are playing it through
start to nish which takes roughly about an
hour. Then we have an eight-song set that
follows The Con and that is also about an
hour. As weve gotten older, our songs have
gotten a bit longer so we dont have to play
as many to ll that second hour.
BLADE: Ive been to shows where the
band plays a classic album straight
through and seen the audience kind
of zone out on deeper cuts. Is that
happening or was that a concern?
SARA: No, it really didnt concern me.
Its one of those albums that our fans
constantly reference and talk about so
while there are denitely songs that are
more popular, I actually think some of
those deep cuts that werent singles are
the songs people are more excited to
hear. We still play Call it O, Nineteen, k.d. lang and I was a teenager listening to
Back in Your Head, Dark Come Soon.
Those are songs that have been in our
set list for 10 years, so people hear them
a lot. I think for us to go into the deeper
cuts was actually what fans wanted.
They were always asking us to play, like,
Are You Ten Years Ago, and Id be like,
I dont know how to play that, were
not gonna do that. So to go back and
learn some of those songs again, thats
actually been the most thrilling part of
the evening and the reception has just
been wonderful. In fact, after L.A. we had
done four shows and we added a song to
the set because it almost felt too short.
And thats a two-hour show, but we still
thought we could do one more song and
people would be happy.
BLADE: Last time we talked, Tegan
told us you sometimes spent as much
as 80 hours writing one song but she
didnt have the patience for that. Was
she slightly exaggerating or is that true?
SARA: Sometimes certain compositions
come together really quickly and that
much time isnt needed but there are
other songs that yeah, Ill spend like
ridiculous amounts of time working on
absolutely. Sometimes if you know you
have something special youre willing
to invest a bunch of time into it. Or
sometimes youll spend a bunch of time
on it, send it out to everybody then you
will get feedback and will go back to the
drawing board and sort of dismantle
it and put it back together again. Im
extremely methodical and I love to tinker
and revise. I love sort of disappearing
into those worlds when Im recording.
I spend a lot of time programming,
working on what I want the drums to
sound like, what I want the bass to sound
like so Im not just sitting down with a
guitar and spending 80 hours, Im really
looking at the song three dimensionally
and creating something that will be like a
blueprint once were in the studio.
BLADE: Some acts like the Indigo
Girls, Melissa Etheridge, you look
back and its kind of surprising they
were out so early on. Do you feel they
paved the way or is that kind of a trite,
sentimental thing people say?
SARA: Oh yeah, I mean, absolutely like
a hundred percent. You know, Melissa
Etheridge, the Indigo Girls, k.d. lang, these
artists were extremely brave and they
were trailblazers. Whats interesting is that
as a result there was almost like a gap
generationally where, you know, while I
totally respect and admire those artists,
especially for what they did, in terms of,
you know, laying down the ground work
for the rest of us. But they were older so, I
mean, my mom was listening to them. My
mom loved Melissa Etheridge, she loved
it came out and I think those are things,
hip-hop and electronic music so I sort of gestures to our audience, we know they
missed the musical inspiration side of it
because I was totally, you know, into what
was relevant to me and my friends in high
school. But in terms of the inspiration to
live a life where you didnt have to be in
the closet or hide who you were, I think
they are deeply important and what was
dicult in the rst 10 years or so of our
career was that there didnt seem to be
those same type of artists anymore. I dont
know what exactly happened or what the
reaction was about, but it felt like a lot of
artists started being more closeted or felt,
you know, they didnt feel compelled to
be out about their sexuality so it was a bit
lonely and isolating for us. But now theres
this big wave of musicians coming out
and starting their careers in their 20s and
whats inspiring about them is that they
are very vocal and their identity and who
they are as people is intrinsically linked
with their music and theyre happy to talk
about it and embrace it and challenge
people who sort of push back against it
and that inspires me.
BLADE: Whats the biggest dierence
that struck you being at the Academy
Awards in person versus watching
in on TV? (Tegan and Sara performed
their song Everything is Awesome
from The Lego Movie at the Academy
Awards in 2015 when it was nominated
for Best Original Song.)
SARA: Its quite surreal and the space
denitely looks smaller in person than
on television. But just to know that
everywhere your eyeballs go and rest
its somebody crazily famous. But yeah,
it was a really cool experience and Im a
Virgo, so Im a very organized person and
I love being in well-run organizations and
man, the Academy Awards is just the top
of the top. They have that thing dialed
in so it was really inspiring to watch that
whole thing come together in person.
Very, very cool.
BLADE: You all have done a lot of
cool things with merchandising and fan
stu and stu for Record Store Day and
so on. Who comes up with those ideas?
SARA: We have a really cool team of
people weve been working with most
of our career. Our art director has been
with us since 2003 and, you know, we
are always batting around ideas. We
really see the band as a really creative
and collaborative project and its not just
for music. For us its really about making
things that we love and that we care
about and in a way if we were teenagers
and we loved the band, these are things
we would want. I loved the Smashing
Pumpkins and when they would put out a
box set or an unreleased song, I would be
the rst person in line at the store the day
desire a little more behind the scenes or
a little more information and those are
things they can tangibly interact with and
we really enjoy making them as a group.
BLADE: Yeah, the Pumpkins were
great with that stu. Remember The
Aeroplane Flies High?
SARA: Yes, that black and white box! I
loved that.
BLADE: Youve toured with a lot of
huge acts like Katy Perry and Gaga. Are
yall like hanging out backstage some
or do they tend to pretty much keep to
themselves?
SARA: Well, with Katy Perry, we know
her, so shes extremely kind and aable.
She just sort of wanders around and you
see her all the time. Shes a really down-to-
earth person so that tour felt very inclusive
and we were friends with a lot of people
on the crew, the dancers were super nice
and everybody was very friendly so it was a
really integrated experience as the support
band. But there are denitely other tours
where youre sort of lower down on the
food chain and I never take it personally.
Every artist is dierent. Weve toured
with other artists who are extremely shy,

extremely nervous people and they sort
of avoid that type of social interaction
and I completely respect that. But weve
been really lucky. Weve had a lot of really
positive touring experiences. Katy Perry
was amazing, the Killers were amazing.
Our very rst tour in 2000, we opened for
Neil Young for a summer. We went out
for two months and really learned how to
tour and we really watched closely how his
business ran and how he interacted with
people and the way he treated his fans
and that was really instrumental in how
we run our business.
BLADE: Can you give us any hint of
what your next album might be like or
roughly when we might hear it?
SARA: The truth is I cant. I have no
clue. I feel really hyper focused on the
work were doing philanthropically and
we always have a lot of irons in the re,
projects were working on and right now
musically, I would say its likely people
wont hear anything new from us for at
least a year or two. I think were pretty
busy working on other stu and you
gotta kinda wait for for the inspiration to
hit you. I song write every day and I work
on new music all the time but something
tells me right now these other areas are
crucial and we should focus there instead.
BLADE: Whats going on with the
Tegan and Sara Foundation and why
are you passionate about this work?
SARA: Its focused on women and
girls in the LGBTQ community. Were
specically working on building solidarity
with organizations and groups that center
on women and girls and were right now
mostly writing out grants to people
we think are doing great work in the
community but were also fundraising to
develop some of our own programming
with health care and social justice and
economic inequities that queer women
face in our community. For us, it sort of
feels like a no brainer. Obviously being
gay ourselves and having a strong female
queer following all thse years, it just sort
of feels like an area of philanthropy that
really makes sense for us. We understand
it, weve experienced it personally and
weve had a lot of interaction with people
in our community. Weve been extremely
fortunate that weve had a lot of success
over the years and were looking forward
to using that success and privilege and
visibility to redistribute some of that
wealth and power back to the community.

Understanding the differences between a condo and a coop
Ownership, finances, fees,
board approval are key

As you set out to buy property in D.C.,
one of the first considerations to think
about is what type of property appeals
to you. Do you want to own a standalone
home or purchase in a building with
shared expenses? When deciding on a unit
within a building, your choices come down
to a condo or a coop. A co-what? Is there a
difference? And, the answer is, yes.
Depending on your situation or per-
sonal preference, one may be the better
choice for you. Or in the end, it may come
down to the unit you like best based on de-
sign, size, and location. In either case, it is
important to understand the differences.
Just as with condos, cooperatives are lo-
cated throughout the city and include many
buildings of historical and architectural sig-
nificance. They range in size from as small
as four units to buildings numbering in the
hundreds. Many coops were once apart-
ment buildings where the neighbors band-
ed together to purchase their property and
thus a cooperative was formed.
There are four major differences in condos
vs coops: ownership, finances, fees, and board
approval. Why dont we discuss them all.
Lets start with ownership. Getting
down to basics, condos are real property

There are four key differences between
condos and coops.

and cooperatives are personal property.
When you purchase a condo unit, you
are purchasing your unit and the right to
use the common spaces. You become a
member of the condo association. When
you purchase a coop unit, you are pur-
chasing stock in a privately held corpora-
tion. As a stockholder you are leasing the
apartment from the corporation in which
you are a part owner. The corporation
owns the building and the land.
What about finances? With a condo,
the loan taken out to purchase the unit
is called a mortgage. When purchasing a

coop, the shareholder takes out a personal
loan. Whats the difference? Often times the
structure of the loans are different. Today,
there are many mortgage products for con-
dos that offer a low down payment, while
loans for coop purchases typically require a
20% down payment. In both cases, interest
on the loan is typically tax deductible.
Most coop buildings also have a mort-
gage on the entire building. This is called
the underlying mortgage. Shareholders
pay toward the mortgage each month as
part of their monthly fees and can typical-
ly take a tax deduction on their share of
the interest of that underlying mortgage.
Taxes are also a little different. In a con-
do, the owner of a unit is responsible for
the real property taxes for their unit. In a
coop, the corporation pays the real prop-
erty taxes for the building, which means
each shareholder is not responsible for
individual real property taxes.
Lets talk more about those monthly
fees. The condo monthly fees are paid to
the association to cover the expenses of
maintaining the common areas, such as
lights in the common areas, water, garbage
disposal, maintenance of the grounds and
roof, and other operating expenses.
The cooperative monthly fees are paid
to the corporation to cover the monthly
payments on the buildings underlying
mortgage, the buildings real property
taxes, in addition to monies to cover re-
pairs, utilities, staff, and other operating
expenses. If you compare the monthly

fees of a similarly sized condo and coop,
the difference in fees is often the addition
of the taxes and the underlying mortgage
to that monthly fee payment. Many times,
coops know that this higher fee can be a
deterrent to purchasing so they adjust
their sales price to accommodate for a
higher monthly fee. So, if you are consid-
ering a condo and coop of similar size,
upgrades, and location you might find
that the coop has a lower sales price, but
a higher monthly fee.
Please say you like me. One last dif-
ference with a coop, is most require that a
potential buyer be approved by the corpo-
rations board. The only two legal grounds
for rejection are financial and expressed
unwillingness to abide by the coop rules
and regulations. Fair housing does apply
to coops and it is illegal to consider race,
age, sex, sexual orientation, religion or any
other protected classification. Because of
this need to prequalify a buyer financially,
cooperatives tend to be more financially
sound then some condominiums.
