Guidelines for Civil Discourse

1. No name calling. Not to your classmates, not to the authors, and not to any

politicians or significant figures involved. Civil discourse is about arguing

while showing respect.

2. All claims must be supported. Use evidence to make your point.

3. Check credibility. Make sure that sources come from reputable

organizations.

4. Change your claims when the evidence changes. Not everything is going to

significantly influence the way you feel, but everything will give you new

information. Your claims should get deeper as a way of reflecting that.

5. No eye-rolls, sneers, or other body language. Express what you have to say

verbally. If you disagree with something that somebody says, do the research

and prove why disagreeing with them is appropriate. Otherwise, youre just

being disrespectful.
