LIME

Solutions Through Technology. Environmentally Friendly Chemicals

Product Description
LIME is powdered Calcium Hydroxide, having the chemical formula: Ca(OH)2.

Typical Application
LIME is used in the preparation of spud muds to increase the alkalinity and flocculate the clay, increasing slurry viscosity.
It is also used to increase the pH of drill water, to help reduce corrosivity. LIME is used as the primary calcium source in
lime mud. LIME is used to treat carbonate and bicarbonate contamination in water base, oil base and synthetic base mud
systems. LIME is also used as the activator for water-in-oil emulsifiers used in the preparation of oil based and synthetic
based muds.

Product Advantages
- An economical source of free calcium in lime based drilling fluids and inexpensive pH control in gyp drilling fluids.
- An effective agent for the control of alkalinity and saponification in oil based drilling fluid systems.
- An effective flocculant in spud mud.
- An inexpensive alkalinity control agent for maintaining alkaline pH when drilling with water.

Recommended Treatment
Typical treatment ranges for the various applications of lime are listed below.
Alkalinity control of drill water: 0.5 - 2.0 lbs/bbl ( 1.4 - 5.7 kg/m)
Low Lime mud formulation: 2.0 - 4.0 lbs/ggl ( 5.7 - 11.4 kg/m)
Oil mud formulation: 4.0 - 8.0 lbs/bbl (11.4 - 22.8 kg/m)
Treatment of carbonates: 0.3 - 1.0 lbs/bbl ( 0.8 - 2.9 kg/m)

LIME may be added directly to the mud through the chemical hopper, or as a water solution via the chemical barrel.
Direct additions of lime to a mud system often result in a significant viscosity increase which may or may not persist.

Handling
Employees should use normal precautions when handling chemical products. The use of an appropriate dust mask,
safety goggles, chemical gloves and apron are recommended when handling or mixing this product. In case of contact
with eyes flush with large amounts of clean fresh water and seek medical aid. In case of contact with skin, remove
contaminated clothing and rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean fresh water. Launder contaminated clothing
before reuse. Review the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for this product prior to use.

Storage
Store in a dry area, protected from precipitation and contact with moisture. Do not store lime in open containers.

Packaging
LIME is supplied in 50 lb (22.5 kg) multi-wall paper sacks.
