First Semester 2017-18

Information Retrieval

Compose a group of 4 students and register with your problem statement on 23rd and 24th
October 2017 (between 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm in IC chamber). The problems will be registered on
the first come first basis. Contact Ms Chandramani in WISoC lab (6012) for your doubts,
clarifications and finalizing the problem on 16th, 21st and 22nd between 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Last
date for submitting report and the prototype is 8th November 2017.

Do the following:
Select an application domain and a couple of core functionalities
Search for more:
Systems on that domain
Research paper(s) on that technical issue (possibly on selected application domain)
Some examples of technical issues that are important, still difficult to tackle, and
have received some attention in the literature are as follows:
Implicit feedback
Context-awareness
Personalization
Diversity
Sequencing
Cold-start problem
Evaluation etc.
Choose the application scenario and the technical issue that you find more interesting,
challenging and significant
Read the required research papers for the selected technical feature(s)
Identify the needs, techniques and GUI required for the task. Report your ideas by
dividing a chosen problem into two modules and then a module into two subset of
tasks. This will result in four tasks, one for each group member.
The project deliverables include:
o a written report
problem statement, literature survey, methodology (including block
diagram), experimental analysis (results and evaluation)
o a system prototype
It is required to implement the proposed system and provide a user
interface for it for the evaluation purpose.

Application Domain
These are some suggestions feel free to select what you prefer
o Text Mining
o Natural Language Processing
o Recommender system
o Multimedia Retrieval
o Cross Lingual IR
o Social Network Mining
o etc.
Structure of the report
1. Problem statement
2. Background of the problem
a. Description of the selected application domain
b. Motivation of the problem
c. Technical issues included in your work
3. Related Work: Literature survey i.e. relevant research papers (at least 3-4) on the topic
and issues ( briefly describe)
4. System Description: block diagram of the system and detailed description of each
block/module, techniques, functions and GUI design (with minimal focus)
5. Evaluation Strategy: Describe evaluation criterion/criteria
6. Experimental Results and evaluation: Present your results and evaluation of your system
a. For example, if your problem is information retrieval then present different
queries and their retrieved results and ranking.
b. Present some results that show the goodness of the retrieved results e.g.,
precision, recall, F1-measure, NDCG etc. along with ground truth.
7. Conclusion and future work

Points to be considered
1) Use standard datasets for initial evaluation of your system and then create a new dataset
using preprocessing techniques. Report should contain detailed analysis and findings from the
dataset created.
2) GUI Should be implemented to visualize final and intermediate results. Note that, the GUI
would not be considered as a module or sub-module.
3) You should use various evaluation measures to evaluate results
4) You should have the clear idea of the problem, its modules and sub-modules, dataset,
attributes and size, evaluation measures, etc. at the time of submission of the problem
statement.
