User Manual LDM-5/U I

The PD measuring impedance LDM-5/U belongs to the LDIC PD
measuring. It is applicable for standardized PD measurements
according to IEC 60270.
The LDM-5/U is designed for PD-signal transmission with a
bandwidth above 30 MHz at 50 matching resistance. So, for
instance, a combination of PD detection with a PD-fault location is
possible, which seems especially advantageously for cable testing.
In order to prevent dangerous overvoltage due to a non-expected
breakdown of the test sample, a fast overvoltage protection is
included in the LDM-5/U.
In case of PD tests according to IEC 60270, first the LDM-5/U has to
be connected to the main ground area using the connector Ground.
Furthermore, it is recommended to use an additional copper foil,
connecting the LDM-5/U on one hand to the test area ground and on
the other hand to either the PD detector LDD-6. For this, the special
connector at one side of the LDM-5/U can be used. In this way the
influence of external noises can be reduced essentially.
The input Test Object has to be connected to the coupling
capacitor, as recommended in IEC 60270. Both output jacks PD
Pulses and Test Voltage have to be connected to the
corresponding input jacks of the PD measuring system device (e.g.
LDD-6).
In the version LDM-5/U, an additional option is available, which
allows not only the detection of PD pulses but also the indication of
the HV test voltage by means of the Voltage Unit within the LDD-6.
For this purpose, a low voltage capacitor is implemented in series to
the internal PD-coupling unit. Therefore, it is not allowed to connect
the LDM-5/U in series to the grounding of any test object. In the case
of connection to a test object, which leads higher currents,
dangerous voltage drops may arise at the terminals of the LDM-5/U.
This advice has to be followed strictly in order to prevent
dangerous situations for the operator.

REFER TO THE GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES

Before using the LDM-5/U, read thoroughly the operation hints of the
PD Measuring system and the GENERAL SAFETY
GUIDELINES, which have to be strictly followed.
