PAMAS S40 Instruction Manual 20160615

Avoid injury caused by slipping or falling. Do not allow tools or parts

lying around the work area. Remove and clean up spilled fluids
immediately.

Check hydraulic oil lines, tubes and hoses carefully. Follow basic safety
precautions when doing that. Do not use your bare hand to check for
potential leaks. Use a cardboard or some paper when checking for a
leak. Escaping hydraulic fluid under pressure may penetrate your body
tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into
your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this
type of injury.

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure or hot oil. Relieve
all pressure in a hydraulic system before any caps, lines, fittings are
disconnected or removed. Exceeding the maximum fluid temperature
and pressure can cause an explosion, resulting from bursting hoses
and/or failed connectors.

Personal injury or death can result from a fire. Flammable liquids may
cause fire hazards, especially when spilled on hot surfaces or electrical
components.
Do not smoke while working on or near any flammable fluid.
Clean up all leaked or spilled flammable fluid immediately.

Make sure you use all necessary protective equipment required to do

the job. Prevent sparks, flames, and smoking around dangerous
substances. Do not eat or drink around dangerous substances.

Use basic precautions when working with electrical components to

prevent injury or death. Contact with batteries or electrical components
may cause injury or death. When the particle counter is disconnected
from the main power supply it is still powered by an internal AC
rechargeable battery.

Water and other liquids conduct electric current and can create a short
circuit resulting in injury or death. Keep all liquids away from electrical
components and other sources of electricity.
Do not create a short circuit between a source of electricity and a liquid
by being in contact with both simultaneously.

The PAMAS S40 is protected against damage by electrostatic

discharge (ESD) to a high extent. This is limited to a system, which is
connected to power supply with protective earth PE and
communication lines correctly, with the housing being closed.

1 Flush Time This time is used to flush the system from the previous sample. During
2 Flowrate
this time the pump is running with the Flush Flow Rate. Since there is
no measurement performed in that time, the flowrate might be higher
than in the calibration specified, to save time. If Flush Time is set to 0
seconds, no flushing will be performed.

3 Pre Run Time During this time the pump is running with the Measure Flow Rate (25
ml/min). This time is used to stabilize the flow through the system. If the
Pre Run Time is set to 0 seconds no stabilization time before a
measurement start will be performed.

4 Measure Flowrate Flowrate while measurement, pressing key toggles between 25 and 10
ml/min.
Note: Please be sure that you use the same flowrate mentioned in
your calibration table, otherwise wrong results will be the
consequence.

5 Sampling Volume Volume of the measured sample in 0.1 ml steps.

6 Measure Repeat Time Enter here the delay time between consequent single measure-ments.

7 Measure Repeat Enter here which is the limiting item of the repeats of the single
Number/Mode
measurements. You have the choice between:

Manual:
Performs endless repetitions of the measure repeat loop until
the user interrupts by pressing Sample OK
Number of Repeats:
Number of counts of repetitions of this loop.
A Number of Repeats of 2 performs actually 3 single
measurements of a sample (the first single measurement and 2
repetitions).
Tolerance Range:

Charging the Battery To charge the internal battery switch off the system and plug in the
mains supply. Charging the battery with plugged in 10 VDC 36 VDC is
not possible. If the S40 was used with the mains supply for 1 week or
longer and should now used with internal battery, plug first the power
plug out, wait two seconds and plug it in again. After 3 hours the battery
is fully charged.

Warning! Remove the power (mains) plug before commencing any

maintenance on the instrument.
Even when the instrument is not connected to the mains supply there is
12 V DC on the battery. With an open casing, therefore, there is a
danger of short circuiting. When short circuiting high currents flow! This
could lead to high temperatures. The battery could disintegrate and
destroy the instrument.

baudrate of 57600 bps with data 8 bit, no parity, one stop bit and no
handshake. The USB cable, delivered with the system, is used for
standard PC connection. Commands are entered as small or capital
ASCII strings within a few seconds (time out). S40 responds with the text
message or an exclamation mark if no error occurs, On occurance of an
error (time out or invalid command) a question mark or a single
character with a carriage return is sent by the S40. The following
commands are implemented for downloading stored measurements.

ID<enter> Quick test of communication S40 answers with an text string

DL M<enter> DownLoad Memory S40 sends an ASCII character string with the
comments of a measurement, used profile name, date and time and
counted particles for each stored single measurement separated by a
tab.
