Q.1. The ages (in completed years) of candidates for Indian Administrative Services exam in a year
from a city are 25, 30, 35, 40, 38, 33, 23, 28, 20, 25, 30, 29, 28, 32, 33, 39, 35, 31, 29 and 27.

(a) Form frequency distribution table in exclusive method using Sturges rule for number of
class intervals beginning at minimum age [2]
(b) Find the number of candidates below 32 years of age from appropriate cumulative
frequency column [1]
(c) Find the number of candidates same or above 28 years of age from appropriate cumulative
frequency column [1]
(d) What is the percentage of candidates from 32 to 40 years of age [1]
(e) Find mean, all quartiles and mode from the table [2]

Q.2. Find the probabilities for the following events.


(a) A non-defective bolt will be found 12 were defective out of 600 bolts [1]
(b) At least one head appears in 4 tosses of a fair coin [2]
(c) The sum of 8 appears in a single toss of pair of fair dice [1]
(d) The sum 7 or 8 or 12 appears in a single toss of a pair of fair dice [2]
(e) A king, ace, jack of clubs or queen of diamonds appear in drawing in a single card from a
well shuffled ordinary deck of cards (i.e. without joker) [2]

Q.3. Out of 800 families with 5 children each, how many would you expect to have (a) exactly 3 boys
(b) exactly 5 girls (c) either 2 or 3 boys? Assume equal probabilities for boys and girls and use
Binomial distribution. [2 + 2 + 3 = 8]

Q.4. The average number of phone calls per minute coming into a switch board between 2 PM and 4
PM is 2.5. Determine the probability that during one particular minute there will be (a) more than
6 calls (b) at most 5 calls. [2 + 2 = 4]

Q.5. Determine the minimum mark a student must get in order to receive an A grade if the top 10% of
the students are awarded A grades in an examination where the mean mark is 72 and standard
deviation is 9. [4]

Q.6. A population consists of four numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5. Find the sampling distribution of means for
all possible distinct samples of size two with replacement. [4]
