Acres sleeves are used if a hole has worn oversize, or if there is corrosion in the hole that cannot be cleaned

out. The part may


be made serviceable by installing an acres sleeve. Acres fastener sleeves are thin walled, tubular elements with a flared end. The
sleeves are installed in holes to accept standard bolts and rivet type fasteners. Before installing an acres sleeve you must first
determine that there is enough strength in the material to allow the hole to be enlarged. If there is, drill the hole out
approximately 1/64 inch larger than its original diameter. A special aluminium alloy or stainless steel sleeve is then installed in
the hole. For certain applications, the sleeve can he bonded into the bole with an adhesive. However, it is typical for the sleeve
to be held in the hole by friction.

5.11.1 Outline the characteristics, construction, principles of operation, advantages, limitations, classification, installation and
removal procedures relating to the following special panel fasteners:

a. Turnlock
Turnlock fasteners are used to secure inspection plates, doors, and other removable panels on aircraft. Turnlock fasteners are
also referred to by such terms as quick opening, quick action and stressed panel fasteners.

The most desirable feature of these fasteners is that they permit quick and easy removal of access panels for inspection and
servicing purposes. Turnlock fasteners are manufactured and supplied by a number of manufacturers under various trade
names. Some of the most commonly used are the Dzus, Camloc, and Airloc.

b. Dzus

Cowling and other inspection access doors that must be opened frequently can be held with Dzus fasteners that require only a
quarter of a turn to lock or unlock. The Dzus turn-lock fastener consists of a stud, grommet and receptacle.

The grommet is made of aluminium or aluminium alloy material. It acts as a holding device for the stud. Grommets can be
fabricated from 1100 aluminium tubing, if none are available from normal sources. The spring is made of steel, cadmium plated
to prevent corrosion. The spring supplies the force that locks or secures the stud in place when two assemblies are joined. The
studs are fabricated from steel and are cadmium plated. They are available in three head styles: wing, flush, and oval. Body
diameter, length, and head type may be identified or determined by the markings found on the head of the stud.

The diameter is always measured in sixteenths of an inch. Stud length is measured in hundredths of an inch and is the distance
from the head of the stud to the bottom of the spring hole. A Dzus key or a specially ground screwdriver locks or unlocks the
fastener.

When something is fastened with Dzus fasteners, care must he taken that the stud in every fastener straddles each of the
springs rather than passing beside them. In order to be sure that all of the fasteners are properly locked, the slots should all be
lined up. Furthermore, when a Dzus fastener is fastened, a distinct click is heard when the spring drops over the hump into the
locked position. To aid in assuring that no stud misses the spring, special receptacle-type fasteners are available that guide the
stud over the spring.

c. Camloc

The camloc fastener is used to secure aircraft cowlings and fairings. It consists of three parts: a stud assembly, a grommet and a
receptacle. Two types of receptacles are available: rigid and floating. The stud assembly of a camlock fastener consists of a
