Question 9 to15 are based on the following passage. Choose the best answer to fill in
each blank.

The history of railway transportation in Malaysia started way back in 1885 in the
district of Larut in Perak. Tin, which was in great demand in Europe (9)
..in Larut. The British, (10) were in control, needed an
efficient way to transport it from mines to the nearest port. Taiping was selected as the
centre, and from there a 13-kilometre track was built to link it to Kuala Sepetang, which
was renamed Port Weld.

The following year, another section was opened (11) Kuala

Lumpur to Klang. From then onwards, more railway sections were built throughout
Peninsular Malaysia, linking stations in the north and going down to Singapore in the
South. By 1931, the railway service had also connected the East Coast states of
Pahang and Kelantan, ending in the fishing village of Tumpat. This line was
(12)..because certain parts of it had to pass through thick
jungles.

Trains had played a (13). role in the economic

development of the country by providing a much needed transportation that was cheap
and reliable. Before that, travelling from one place to another was difficult and dangerous.
Most of the country was covered by thick jungles, and some travellers had the misfortune
of being attacked by wild animals.

Earlier settlements tended to be near rivers, with boats being the main mode of
transport. (14) their range was extremely limited. The
introduction of trains helped to open up the country and brought progress to the people.
(15) could travel to previously isolated places, bringing their goods to
sell and buying the local products which they then take elsewhere. With the movement of
people and goods, various economic activities were created.

Questions 16 25 are based on the article below.

BANANA POWER!

Bananas grow abundantly in Malaysia. In fact, bananas are believed to have

originated here and spread to India and China, then to the Caribbean and Central
America. There are many varieties of bananas and some are best eaten raw, while
others have to be cooked fried, boiled, baked or even cooked in soups and curries.
Because of its versatility, banana is the second most commonly grown fruit crop in
Malaysia.

The banana plant is often mistaken for a tree because it can grow to a height of 7
metres. Interestingly, the banana plant is actually a herb - the largest herb in the
world! It is also a member of a lily family.

The banana plant takes approximately one and a half years from planting to
harvesting. The plant bears one shoot or stem which holds the bunch of bananas. After
the stem has been cut, the plant dies off.

The huge male banana flower, also known as jantung pisang or banana heart, is
produced at the end of a bunch of bananas. The outer part of the flower is deep
crimson in colour. The inner part is paler and can be eaten raw or used for cooking as a
vegetable dish. The female banana flowers are further up the stem of the male
flower. They do not require fertilization to become fruit. So it is actually the female
flowers that produce fruit.

The name banan, Arabic for finger, was given by the Arabian traders. The
bananas used for trading in the early days were small, not like the long ones we are
used to seeing in the supermarkets today.

Bananas grow in a cluster called a bunch. An average bunch will have 15

bananas or fingers in each hand. It is easy to harvest bananas by cutting off its stalk a
few centimetres from its bunch to carry it.

Questions 26 -31 are based on the following passage

John Taylor was a wildlife officer in Malaya. This passage describes how he
acquired a new pet.

1 "Would you like a baby tiger?" some aborigines once asked me in Pahang. 2
"Yes, please, "I replied quickly. I have tried to get one for many years."
3 "We will return in a few days," the leader of the aborigines said.
4 "We have found three tiger cubs in the jungle, one female and two males. We
will bring you a male." 5

5 When I reached my house, I told my wife about the visit. She beamed at the
thought of the new pet and started to work out where it could be kept. Soon, I had to
go on a long journey and I was so busy that I completely forgot about the aborigines
and their promised gift.

6 Some days later, I returned to my bungalow, and noticed that my wife did not 10
look very pleased to see me. l thought this was strange, but l was busy unpacking my
equipment, and putting the car in the garage. For a few minutes, my wife watched me
without saying much. Then she reminded me of the aborigines' visit.

7 "Come and see what you have now!" she said, and took me to the bathroom.

8 I looked into a bundle of old woolen clothes and saw a small, thin, and very 15
dirty little animal in the middle of them.

9 "Is that the tiger cub you mentioned?" she asked me.

10 I understood how she felt. Certainly, this dirty little bundle was not at all what
we had expected, but we soon set to work on him. We called him "Rimba" because
this is the Malay word for the dense, untouched jungle in which the aborigines found 20
him. We cleaned him up. Then, examined him carefully and saw that he was ill. There
was something wrong with his eyes and his soft fluffy coat. I knew that he had not
been fed properly since he left his mother. Somebody had probably given him
condensed milk, which is very bad for the stomach of young animals.

11 We gave Rimba what may seem a strange meal to you. First, we made him 25
swallow liquid paraffin with a special medicine mixed with it. Then we started to give him
a bottle of milk with some fine white clay in it. After about a week of this, he
began to recover, and soon learned to feed properly.

11

www.banksoalanspm.com
SULIT 1119/2

12 When Rimba was five weeks old, we gave him some meat jelly to eat,
but it was three more weeks before he would eat raw meat. At first, he did not 30
like it, but he quickly changed his mind and settled down to the normal food of a tiger.
Our next problem was to make sure that he had enough calcium to allow
his bones and teeth to grow properly. We chopped up pieces of the neck of a
goat, meat and bones together, and gave those to him.

13 At the end of two months, he had grown a lot and needed plenty of 35
exercise. We gave him a longer playtime in the garden, usually from about half past
four until it grew dark. A raised platform of planks was built in his room for
him to sleep on, and we gave him a large bath fill of cold water so that he could take
a bath whenever he felt like one. Even when he was very small, he liked to climb into
a small bowl, which we kept in the garden as a birdbath. As he grew 40 bigger, we
bought larger baths for him, until he had the largest we could find. Tigers do not
like heat, and often take baths in jungle streams. In fact, a tiger cannot remain
healthy without frequent washing in clean, cold water.

THE LIVING PHOTOGRAPH (by Jackie Kay)

My small grandmother is tall there,

straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt,
pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
white hand in black hand.

Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.
It was true after all; that look.
My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.

She went to the awful place grandmothers go.

Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.
But there she is still,
in the photo with me at three,
the crinkled smile is still living, breathing.
