X-33 METALLIC HEAT SHIELD DECLARED READY FOR FLIGHT

NOTE‹Local media angle in:

- Huntsville, AL (X-33 program management)
- Chula Vista, CA
- Palmdale, CA

NASA has declared "ready for flight" a new technology

designed to make future spacecraft lighter and less expensive
to launch into space. A metallic thermal heat shield,
developed and built by BF Goodrich Aerospace/Aerostructures
Group in Chula Vista, CA, will fly on the X-33, the half-
scale reusable launch vehicle (RLV) demonstrator. The X-33,
named "VentureStar" (TM) by its developer, Lockheed Martin,
is the testbed for spacecraft technologies that are airplane-
like in operation while using a single-stage-to-orbit design.
This RLV concept could reduce the cost of putting a payload
into space from the current $10,000 per pound to $1,000 per
pound. The metallic panels would replace the maintenance-
intensive, fragile thermal tile type of system currently used
on the Space Shuttle.
