ASKING QUESTIONS IN ENGLISH

To build questions in English we need at least one auxiliary verb and we have to remember to put it in
front of the subject.

YES or NO QUESTIONS
This kind of questions can be answer with a simple Yes or No, they are called Closed Questions.

VERB TO BE
AM/IS/ARE + SUBJECT + NAME, ADJECTIVE, VERB
Examples:

Is she a nurse? Yes, she is. Are you happy? Yes, I am. Am I wrong? No, you arent.
Es enfermera? S, lo es. Eres feliz? S, lo soy. Estoy equivocado? No, no lo ests.

VERB TO HAVE
HAVE/HAS + SUBJECT + NAME, ADJECTIVE, VERB
Examples:

Have you got a dog? Yes, I have. Has he got a car? No, he has not. Have I got something in my hair? No, you havent.
Tienes un perro? S, lo tengo. Tiene coche? No, no lo tiene. Tengo algo en el pelo? No, no tienes.

ALL THE OTHER VERBS


All the other verbs use the auxiliary verb to do to build the question.

DO/DOES + SUBJECT + VERB + NAME, ADJECTIVE


Examples:

Do you believe in ghosts? No, I dont Do you like football? Yes, I do. Does she study Math? Yes, she does.
Crees en fantasmas? No, no creo. Te gusta el ftbol? S, me gusta. Estudia matemticas? S, las estudia.

WH- QUESTIONS
This kind of questions can be answer with a yes or no but in most cases the answer needs more
information. They are called Open questions. These questions use Interrogative Pronouns or Question
Words. These pronouns are:

What - Where - When - Who - Whose - Why - Which - How


Qu Dnde Cundo Quin A quin Por qu Cul Cmo

VERB TO BE
INT. PRONOUN + AM/IS/ARE + SUBJECT + NAME, ADJECTIVE, VERB
Examples:

What is a recorder? Where is Peter? When are you available? Who is this person? How is the pizza?
Qu es una flauta? Dnde est Peter? Cundo ests disponible? Quin es esta persona? Cmo est la pizza?

Whose is this toy? Why are you late? Which is your favorite color?
De quin es este juguete? Por qu llegas tarde? Cul es tu color favorito?

VERB TO HAVE
INT. PRONOUN + HAVE/HAS + SUBJECT + NAME, ADJECTIVE, VERB
Examples:

What have you got there? Which class have you got today? Who have you got in the afternoon?
Qu tienes ah? Cul clase tienes hoy? Quin tienes hoy por la tarde?
ALL THE OTHER VERBS
INT. PRONOUN + DO/DOES + SUBJECT + NAME, ADJECTIVE, VERB
Examples:

What do you do? Where do you live? When do you go? Who do you love? Whose do you have?
Qu haces? Dnde vives? Cundo vas? A quin amas? De quin los tienes?

Which do you prefer? Why do you eat there? How do you do that?
Cules prefieres? Por qu comes ah? Cmo haces eso?
