DIY check up
by Je taime Hayer

Your car is likely to be the second biggest

investment you will ever make, so it
pays to take good care of it with regular
checkups. Simple DIY will help maintain
the condition of your vehicle and save
you money. Regular maintenance checks
reduce the incidence of problems and as
always, prevention is better than the cure.

The tool kit

A basic tool kit is relatively inexpensive and doesnt
take up much space; in exchange youll get the peace of
mind that comes with knowing you have the equipment
to do basic checks and handle minor car problems.

Your tool kit should contain:

Waterproof tape.
Pliers.
Screw drivers.
Mechanics wire.
Flash light and spare batteries.
Jump-start cables.
Car jack and lug wrench.
Axle stand.
First aid kit.
Spare tyre.
Towing cable.
CRC advanced lubricant for parts, cleaning and
protection against corrosion.
Smart extras include spare light bulbs, a spare fan belt,
a bottle of engine oil and a fluorescent emergency vest.
Always have an emergency first aid kit just in case.

1. Start by finding a great picture

Maybe you could take a shot of something your Dad
really likes, or perhaps you can scan through the family
photos of a time that means something to him and to
you. A shared moment is always special.

Try to get the faces really big in the shot so the

background wont be too important. The closer to the
camera the better and remember to take the picture
in lots of light and turn on the flash. Use the flash
especially if it is sunny.

2. Get your picture printed

The next step is to print your picture. I suggest taking
your picture (on a memory stick or on disk) to a sign
writer or a print shop. They will be able to print the
photo onto a piece of canvas. This will cost about $20 -

Spring Clean Spring Clean

So what can you do to

prepare your home for
sunny summer days?

The most logical way to start the

process is to create a checklist of
what needs to be completed. Start
by looking at visual areas that need
obvious attention. Cobwebs around
the house, windows and outdoor
living areas, as well as moss covered
paths, patios and driveways. You
might want to inspect your roof, as
well as check gutters for grime and
blockage. Also add replacing light
bulbs, scrubbing patio furniture,
working on the garden and cleaning
out the garage to your list.

Spring
in your step by Soraya Nicholas

The only thing worse than winter itself, is looking out and seeing the
mess it has left behind. As the days become longer and the weather
warmer, its time to start thinking about outdoor spring cleaning
and what you can do to make your exterior ready for summer.

Most patios and driveways look dull and dreary after long months of wet, cold weather,
as do roof profiles, gutters and outdoor furniture. Moss and grime can build up and look
unsightly and dirty, not to mention posing a safety risk to anyone unlucky enough to
slip. Slimy green or slippery black can quickly turn into a skating rink in the shade,
meaning its important to act fast.
Once you have decided on what you need to do around the
home, its time to think about how you will tackle each task.
To eradicate lichen, spore related growth and moss, there
are two main options. You can either use a water blaster
or a chemical mix. While many homeowners are interested
in eco-friendly cleaning options, making water blasting as
attractive as it is effective, chemical sprays do a great job
and can eradicate moss and spores over the long term.

Water blasting
Water blasters have always done the job and you probably
have one at home, however if you are looking for a new
water blaster, the Nilfisk model available at Mitre 10 has
a reputation for excellence. Regardless of the water blaster
you choose though, the important factors to consider are
ensuring the hose is sufficiently long enough for ease

Move It is a similar product, specifically formulated to

kill and reduce the potential re-growth of lichen, spores,
moss and mould. It needs to be applied at the same
time of the day as the other products, with the surface
dampened with water, then sprayed and brushed
thoroughly. The infected area then needs to be left for
30-40 minutes, kept damp during the whole process,
then brushed and hosed off. This will kill the unsightly
green or black mess from surfaces and protect it for up
to 12 months. Move It is also a general purpose cleaner
and it will effectively kill moss on lawns, without killing
the lawn.

Chemical mixes
There is a large array of chemical products on the
market, but some are far more effective than others.
Three products that stand out from the rest are well
known in the market are 30 Seconds, Spray & Walk
Away, and Move It.

The 30 Seconds range provides a specially formulated

roof treatment to get rid of lichen, moss and algae from
any type of roof. It causes no damage to roof profiles,
and slowly kills the spores and mould, therefore keeping
it away for a long period of time. The key to correctly
applying the product is to do so at night or first thing in
the morning, so the area remains moist and cannot dry
out too fast. Lichen and sooty mould can take longer to

Paint Maintain

For a slower acting, longer-term clean, use a deep

clean, designed for general maintenance of exterior
weathered surfaces. Simply apply as recommended with
water to weathered exterior areas, such as discoloured
cementitious surfaces or lightly moss infested walls,
and leave. The combination of deep clean and natural
weather conditions will slowly break down surface
contamination leaving a cleaner surface.

Attend to areas of flaking paint, stained paint (treat the

source of the stain, then touch-up the paint finish as
required), moss and mould, and rotten areas of timber.

If you are planning to wash down a freshly painted

house or building, wait at least four weeks from the
completion of the painting job to give the paint time to
fully cure. If debris is being carried onto the building
during painting, cease work and restart when the air is
clear. Debris carried onto a wet building may be trapped
into the paint film and will be impossible to remove later
without removing the paint finish itself.

During the first few months after your paint has been
applied any of the following may occur, all of which
are quite natural and do not imply inferior quality or
accelerated wear:

Pigment transfer:
Bright interior colours, reds in particular, can be
vulnerable to pigment transfer, where a tiny amount of
the pigment can be removed when wiped with a cloth.
Pigment transfer does not affect the appearance of the
paint finish, nor its durability; however it can cause
marking on other items that come into contact with the
paint finish, such as sofas and curtains. Simply wipe the
surface area evenly to remove the loose pigment.

Excess moisture:
An enemy to your paint finish is excess moisture. Well
constructed modern homes with aluminium doors and
windows are almost 100% airtight. Unfortunately this
has disadvantages in that any moisture generated in
the house from showers and even occupants breathing
will not be able to escape unless special ventilation
is provided. Rooms on southern aspects can get quite

Ladders Ladders

Ladder construction
Ladders can be made from wood, aluminium or fibreglass.
Wood scores highly for durability and non-conductivity,
but they are heavy and prone to weathering and insect
damage.

Aluminium is good for portability, strength and

resistance to climate but tends to bend easily under
pressure. Aluminium ladders are ideal for indoor
usage and outdoor projects away from power lines and
corrosive salt water.

The newest ladder material is fibreglass, which is non-

conductive and good for all weather conditions, so better
suited for outdoor work and roofing. Unlike aluminium,
fibreglass frames wont bend easily, but under extreme
stress they may snap, although not something that
happens in normal DIY usage.

Nothing beats spending time outside,

either as a family or when entertaining,
but the New Zealand climate is often not
amiable to such alfresco affairs. Winter is
commonly considered a no-go for outdoor

spring and summer evenings are also often
too cool to be comfortable under the stars.

Many new homes are designed to incorporate outdoor

living by way of undercover patios or sheltered areas
protected from the wind.

Patio heaters
A simple way to heat these areas is to use a patio heater,
often seen in bars and restaurants. These portable
heaters are powered by LPG gas, so there is a gas bottle
hidden in the base of the structure.

The heater works by providing heat from overhead and

type of patio heater will provide strong heat even on the
coldest of nights. Popular models include the Meteor
patio heater, and the ever-popular Rinnai patio heater.
The latter model is designed to deliver warmth for up to
18 hours, and heats a space of at least 30 square metres.
The heater uses a unique ceramic tile radiant burner
system. The most durable patio heaters are made from
stainless steel and aluminium, with simple electronic
ignition.
