THE PROGRAM
The lecture tour Journalism and the Media in the Age of Trump is against the backdrop of the
TECH FORUM, a conference organized by the German-American Institute in Heidelberg under the
title Journalism 2.0 Fake News, Enlightenment and Democracy. Interdisciplinary experts come
together to be inspired and work on issues like:
Fact-Checking, Sourcing, and Combating Fake News
Business Trends and Solutions for Sustainable Newsrooms
Legal and Policy Challenges - Challenges and Solutions at the Federal/State Level
Storytelling 2.0 - Video, Social Media and VR
Regaining Trust: Audience Engagement and Outreach

With this program, we would like to help illustrate strong points and weaknesses in todays
approach to innovation, journalism, media and policy in a multifaceted forum that will be very
hands on.
Prof. Damian Radcliffe will explore some of the biggest, and most important, issues facing the
media and journalists in 2017 in this lecture series Journalism and the Media in the Age of Trump.
Donald Trump is a different kind of politician. His candidacy and electoral victory have challenged
journalistic orthodoxy and have drawn new battle lines between the White House and the
mainstream media. How did we get here? How has Trumps first year changed the conversation
and how should the media respond? This lecture will explore these important, rapidly evolving,
questions.

THE FORMAT
The program consists of a series of events at several locations throughout Germany. During
evening lectures and debates, panel discussions and luncheons, we will focus on the public
sentiment and discuss current themes on a broader scale.

THE GERMAN-AMERICAN INSTITUTES

The German-American Institutes are a network of independent, bi-national, cultural and
educational institutes in Germany. Their history has its roots in what was formerly known as
Amerika Haus, a US institution developed after WWII to provide an opportunity for German citizens
to learn more about American culture and politics and engage in discussion and debate on the
transatlantic relationship. After the Amerika Haus program was phased out, 10 institutes were re-
founded by local communities with support of the German Foreign Office, the state governments,
as well as other interest groups.

The program is co-funded by the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Germany.

The tour will start in Nuremberg and will be rolled out nationwide. Planned
event locations are Nuremberg, Kaiserslautern, Tuebingen, (Stuttgart),
Munich and Heidelberg.
