RESULT : WORLD PERSPECTIVE IN MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Issues of mental health of universities student increasing concerns globally. 1 In

Benton et als study (2003) analyzed client records throughout a 13 year period showed
that the majority of student problem areas had increased significantly overtime, often
doubling or tripling in frequency depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and
suicidality.2 Age is an important factor in explaining the increase in students mental
health incidence. Its mean during this time the developmental challenge of transition to
adulthood occurred.1 Starting student life at university is an important stage in the life,
because students should get ready to work and live as a productive member of the society.
Mental health issues among universities student also occure cause there is a perceive
academic life as stressful and demanding and report experiencing emotional and
cognitive.3 Other factor such as living away from home for the first time, having to make
new friends, handle finances, and adjusting to new environment. In universities world,
students are now taught in larger groups, which can make it more difficult to make
friends and develop a sense of belonging learning regimes.1 So, the student need a
program associated with the transition to university. For example, a program transition to
university in UK by providing high levels of structured support for students in their first
year to try to ensure that they make friends, feel supported by staff and settle into their
new environment (Nelson, Quinn, Marrington, & Clarke, 2012).4
The growing prevalence of student mental health issues making bad impact for
campus environments. It means, mental health problem not only lead to disruption of
students's academic performance but also other students in campus living. For example,
suicadility case have traumatic implications for all students, lecturer, staff, and etc in
campus living. So, college should face financial and reputational risks becaue of mental
health issues.5

China is one of a country who have almost all universities around China set up
their own mental health service institutions equipped with full-time professionals and the
third stage is a fast development stage from 2005 until present with strong support from
government. Chinas universities have five categories in counseling center, there are
psychological counseling, publicmental health education, first-year mental health
guidance, mental health assistance team building, and psychological crisis intervention. 6
In US, the mental health needs of university students have become a national focus
during the past decade. One of the reason is occurance of series highly publicized tragic
incident. University of California, Santa Barbara, for example, have brought national
attention to the unmet mental health needs of students.5
Two specific trends are highlighted in particular mental health issues among
universities student are increasing numbers of students who seeking out counseling
services and increasing of severity level about mental health.5 A study followed by 1197
student who completed the General Health Questionnaire-28 and the result only 5.1%
were currently receiving treatment among who have mental health illness. 1 This
following study had explain students behavior in seeking help of mental health cases. A
survey data point to large numbers of students admitting to depression, for example, but
the majority of these students seek help from friends, family or others rather than from a
mental health professional. The data showed that counseling services need improvement
in services to minimize the limitiation such as shorter session limits, long waitlists for
service, and greater numbers of referrals to off-campus mental health providers in
surrounding communities (Gallagher, 2013).7 Other issues about mental health among
student universities also occurred in international student that findings indicated 44% of
students who become respondent reported having an emotional or stress related problem
that significantly interfered with their academic successor well-being. Moreover, they
were less likely to seek out services from the campus counseling center. 5 So now,
universities need innovative ways to increase help seeking, privacy and timely access for
students with mental health problems and provision of realistic support for staff are also
urgent priorities (Leahy et al., 2010).8
According to (study) (year) six main mental health issues among university
student, are6 :
1. Interpersonal communication problems

friends, family members, and also lecturer due to reasons such as difficulties in
coping with interpersonal stress, lack of communication, inadequacies in
communication skills and wrong perceptions of interpersonal relationships.
2. Relationship issues
This issues include relationship attitude, tensions in intimate relations and
psychological adjustment after a relationship break-up.
3. Career development issues

career planning, and a pessimistic attitude toward future.
4. Stresses related to studies

toward studies, pressure to pass the exam and difficulties of making decisions
between entering job market and continuing postgraduatestudies.
5. Neurosis

symptoms of neurosis are diverse, but it's typical case is that the patient feel they
should but they cannot control their behavior , for example, anxiety, long-time
pressure, strong fear, meaningless worries and obsession, body discomfort, but no
clinically abnormal signs can be found. Statistics have shown that the main problems
of students related to neurosis are obsession, anxiety, neurasthenia, sleeping
difficulties.
6. Internet addiction

physical and psychological damages. Many studies demonstrate significant negative
influence of excessive internet use on the body and the mind.

Finally, there are responsibility of universities to decrease incidence of mental

health issues. The responsibility such as decrease stigma and foster social incusion to
build self-esteem in people who have mental health problems, improve a good and
comprehensive prevention and management system on mental health univirsities issues
which can reduce wrong coping mechanisms such as use alcohol and drugs.8 Mental
students well being in university can fostered by variety programs including mental
health literacy, access to mental health service users through support programs,
orientation to online helping resources such as self-help, online mentors, FAQs and
online counseling for students.8 Developing online helping offer a confidential avenue for
students who are reluctant to access on campus health services for theirmental health
problems and has proved useful in several other studies concerning health information
access (Alishahi-Tabriz, Sohrabi, Kiapour, & Faramarzi, 2013; Lau et al., 2013).9
