Grade: 5th Title/Lesson: Prefixes and Suffixes

Standards:
ELAGSE5L4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning
words and phrases based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a
range of strategies
a. Use context (e.g., cause/effect relationships and comparisons in text) as a clue to
the meaning of a word or phrase.
b. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the
meaning of a word (e.g., photograph, photosynthesis).
Warm-up:
Students will play Kahoot to identify prefixes and suffixes. They will log in cromebooks
and type in their names and pin number to start the game.

Ask probing questions during the game that requires students to justify/explain
their answers.

Lesson Activities:
The students will know
that prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of words
a prefix is in the beginning of the base/root word
a suffix is found at the end of the base/root word
how to use context clues to come up with the word meaning
The students will be able to
identify prefixes and suffixes
add prefixes and suffixes to words in sentences to make writing more descriptive.
Use prefixes and suffixes correctly in sentences.

Presentation/Guided Practice
Teacher will explain that English itself does not use prefixes as heavily as it once did, but many
English words come from Latin, which uses prefixes and suffixes (you can use the
word affix to refer either to a prefix or a suffix) quite extensively. For example, the words
"prefix," "suffix," and "affix" themselves are all formed from "fix" using prefixes:
"ad" (to) + "fix" (attached) = "affix"
"pre" (before) + "fix" = "prefix"
"sub" (under) + "fix" = "suffix"
Note that both the "-d" of "ad" and the "-b" of "sub" change the last letter.
Here are some of the most common Latin prefixes (for the meanings of the Latin roots, look up
the words in a good dictionary):

Independent Practice
Students will work in collaborative quads to complete Language Practice pages in the
Hardcourt Language book / Ready Writing book

meaning of the suffix or prefix to write the definition of the word.

Answer using RACE method and submit as a ticket out the door.
