LESSON OVERVIEW
These lessons are designed to accompany the video ?Wakefield Covered Bridge?. The video was
produced and created by Gatineau Valley youth as a way of to highlight local history, culture and
geography. These lessons focus on the actual history of the Wakefield Covered Bridge and can be
used either as a progression or individually.

Summary:
In this introduction lesson, students will activate their prior knowledge and access their
curiosity by creating a KWL chart about the Wakefield Covered Bridge. Students will
watch the video "Wakefield Covered Bridge".

Essent ial Quest ions: What is the historical significance of the Wakefield Covered
Bridge and how does it relate to us? How can we better understand our own sense of
self/place by learning more about the history of our community?

LEARNING PLAN

Preparat ion: Stick it notes, chart paper, markers, Cue the video ?Wakefield Covered
Bridge?. Prepare a KWL chart.
Hook/ Int ro: Put up a photograph of the Wakefield Covered Bridge on the Smart Board
(PHOTO#1)

1. Start a KWL chart. In groups or as a class, ask students to write down everything they
know about the Wakefield Covered Bridge on stick it notes.
2. Add their answers to a class chart. Look at this list together and then ask students to
write down everything that they want to know about the bridge on their ?stick it notes?.
3. Go over their questions as a class.
4. Watch the "Wakefield Covered Bridge" video. While they watch: Ask students to listen
to see if any of their questions have been answered by the video and ask them to think
about any other questions they have while they are watching.
5. After watching, ask students if there is anything that they would like to add to the
KWL chart.
- Students may take facts from the video such as dates and other information that
they may want to add under the L for ?learned.?
- They may also have more questions that they would like to add under the W for
?want to know?.
6. Tell students that you will be working together to learn more about the covered
bridge in the coming lessons.
