Novel Air Pollution Mapping and Health Disparities in Oakland, CA
The Environmental Defense Fund is collecting air pollution data for high resolution air quality
mapping. The target study region will include areas of East, West and downtown Oakland, as
defined by the boundaries of the data collected by the Environmental Defense Fund. Air
pollution data will be linked to geocoded addresses and electronic medical records in the
Kaiser Permanente Northern California database. We will estimate the relationship between
differences in traffic-related air pollution levels and health disparities across multiple disease
areas.

Optimizing Personalized Care Using Economic Studies of Genomic Testing
This project will identify ways of enhancing personalized health care by evaluating the impact
of physician, patient, and healthcare system factors using a genomic test for breast cancer
prognosis as the exemplar and applying an innovative multi- criteria decision analysis
approach that incorporates physician and patient preferences for important psychological and
qualitative factors, as well as health outcomes and costs. Our work will develop a
generalizable framework and tools useful for other emerging technologies and for other
chronic diseases.

The Discovering Healthcare Innovations to Address Disparities in Stroke (DIADS)
DIADS is collaboration between Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) and the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). DIADS seeks to design, implement, and
evaluate a clinically-delivered hypertension control intervention that consists of both a clinical
algorithm for rapid and effective blood pressure control, as well as a culturally-tailored dietary
intervention aimed at more effective sustained blood pressure control.

Pre-Visit Prioritization for Complex Primary Care Patients with Diabetes
We propose to implement and evaluate a novel, patient-centered intervention designed to
facilitate communication between patients and their primary care providers with the goal of
enabling more effective primary care for complex patients with poorly controlled diabetes.
Role: Biostatistician

Body Composition, Weight, and Colon Cancer Survival
This study will examine the extent of excess body fat and muscle loss among persons
diagnosed with colorectal cancer in order to see if levels of body fat or muscle mass are
related to survival. Study findings could provide important insight into the role of energy
balance and body composition in cancer survival and may lead to more tailored treatment
strategies.

Genome-Wide Association Study of Mammographic Density
Mammographic density (MD) is one of the strongest known risk factors for breast cancer. Our
primary goal is to identify novel genes for MD by conducting a GWAS in 30,000 Caucasian
women participating in KPNCs Research Program on Genes, Environment and Health
(RPGEH). We will obtain routine screening mammograms and assess breast density.
RPGEH and KPNC databases will provide genome-wide marker data for over 650K SNPs as
well as extensive epidemiologic and medical data, including BMI, lifestyle and reproductive
factors, and use of prescription medications.
Role: Co-Investigator
