Q1 a) Draw a neat sketch of DC machines showing various parts. Write the 09


functions of each part of DC machine.

b) Explain the concept of back e.m.f. in DC Motor. 08

Q2 a) Explain the Swinburn’s Test in detail with circuit diagram. 08

b) Find the efficiency of DC shunt motor at full load. The rating of the
machine is 2 HP, 8 A, 1500 r.p.m., 220 V., whose armature resistance is
1.2 Ω. Its no load readings at 1500 r.p.m. are as follows,
Supply voltage 220V, Line current 1.4A, shunt field current 0.4 A and

speed 1500 r.p.m.

Q3 a) Explain the term Armature Reaction in case DC Generator. Derive the


equation for demagnetization and cross magnetization Amp-turns 08

b) The armature resistance of a 200V DC shunt motor is 0.4 Ω and no load


current is 2 A. When loaded, armature takes 50 A of current at 1200 08
r.p.m. Find the no load speed.

Q1 a) Derive the equation for the electromagnetic torque of a DC Motor starting


from fundamentals. 09

b) A 12 pole DC generator has a simple wave wound armature having 144


coils of 10 turns each. The resistance of each turn is 0.011Ω, the flux per
pole is 0.05 Wb and speed is 200 r.p.m. Find i) induced e.m.f. ii)

armature resistance.

Q2 a) Explain brake load test with complete circuit diagram. 08

b) The brake load test on a DC Shunt motor gave the following results,
Tensions 3.2 Kgs & 0.3 Kg, radius of pulley = 10 cms, speed 1500 r.p.m.
supply voltage V = 230 V, line current IL= 2.8 A find out, torque, output 08
power and efficiency.

Q3 a) Explain the term commutation in DC Machines in details. 08

b) A 250 V DC shunt motor on no load runs at 1000 r.p.m. and takes 5 A.


the armature and shunt field resistances are 0.2Ω and 250Ω respectively.
Calculate the speed when loaded at 50 A, if the field is weaken by 3%

Q1 a) Derive the e.m.f. equation for DC Generator starting from fundamentals. 08

b) A lap wound DC Shunt Generator having 80 slots with 10 conductors per


slot generates on no load an e.m.f. of 400 V when running at 1000 r.p.m.
At what speed should it be rotated to generate a speed of 220 V on open

circuit.

Q2 a) Explain with complete circuit diagram the procedure to find out the
magnetization characteristics of a separately excited shunt generator. 08

b) A 4 pole DC Shunt Generator has a wave winding. The armature and


field resistances are 0.2Ω & 60 Ω respectively. The brush contact drop is
2 V. The generator is supplying 50 lamps of 60 W at 120 V, find
i) current in each armature conductor

ii) Generated voltage.

Q3 a) Draw the magnetic circuit of a DC Machine and explain it in short. 06

b) Draw the sketch which will explain demagnetizing & cross magnetizing 05
effects of the armature reaction of the DC Generator.
c) Derive the formula for calculating cross magnetizing and demagnetizing 05
amp-turns.
