Weather gods smile on Auckland Diwali Festival

I
t was nice to see that the weather
gods had chosen to smile on
Aucklanders at the Diwali
Festival an occasion when Indian
culture and the magnanimity of New
Zealanders, both were on full display
last weekend October 14 and 15 by
keeping it warm and dry.
The fine spell of weather gave
an added incentive to festival-goers
to throng in huge numbers and
get a taste of what could easily be
described as a great experience of
fun, food and exhilaration.
At least, the weather gods have
chosen to give some certitude, in
these otherwise uncertain times
when the entire nation is being held
captive to Winston Peters next
moves in government forming.
In that respect, this festival was
a great equaliser and humbling
experience as it reflected the political
uncertainty currently experienced
by the entire nation and very much
established the fact that ethnic
migrants are integral part of the
ethos of this nation who deserve and
get exactly the same as other New
Zealanders, which in this case was
political uncertainty.

Mr Srivastava about his expectations

the wider community.
IWK: How do you find
New Zealand?
Anupam Srivastava: It is
interesting. The weather is different,
and it is exciting to be here, and
there is a lot of scope for the bank
here, and I am looking forward to
working here.
IWK: Tell us more about Bank of
Baroda in New Zealand?
AS: Bank of Baroda has been the
first Indian bank to open in New
Zealand. It opened in 2010, and
we have delivered seven years of
our service in the country. We have
three branches, two in Auckland
Manukau and Dominion Road and
one in Wellington.
IWK: What are the services that
Bank of Baroda in New Zealand
offers?
AS: Everything a bank can offer,
we offer that. But there are certain
special services for the people of
Indian origin, for example, a typical
Indian who would come from India

free, and he or she can do it from
internet banking also.

NRI account in India because he is
still not a permanent resident here,
so we facilitate that by opening
a bank account in India which is

IWK: This has come as news to
me, I was personally not aware
that we could come for home loans
etc. Are the rates of interest, terms
and conditions different, lenient
or stringent for the Kiwi Indian
community?
AS: It is almost the same, and
you will find our dealings are very
friendly we have an Indian heritage
that helps. It is competitive, and we
are keen to have that kind of business
in our banks.

Wellingtons Courts and Ministry
of Justice offices gathered together
on Friday, October 13, to celebrate Diwali, the
annual Hindu festival of lights, and enjoy an
authentic Indian lunch.
The lunch event that had started casually
a few years ago by a group of enthusiastic
staffers at the Ministry office had also involved
some voluntary donations going toward a
chosen charity.
The celebrations and the event have grown
since then, involving larger participation and
gathering of funds for a worthy cause.
Every year, a separate cause and charity
are chosen by the event organisers in a bid to
support as wide a range of charitable causes
as possible.
This year the chosen charity was
Wellington Hospitals.
Wellington Hospitals Foundation Chairman,
Bill Day attended the event and thanked
everyone for their generosity.
The event raised $2400.00, which will be
donated to the Wellington Hospitals Foundation
and the Wellington Childrens Hospital.
People donate $10 to attend, and previous
recipients have included Wellington Free
Ambulance and KidsCan.
In 2016 $1800.00 was raised for the Mary
Potter Hospice.

from evil.
I always look forward to Diwali as it is a special time for Indian families to come together
and welcome a new year with fresh hope. It is a wonderful opportunity to embrace your
heritage and showcase the beauty of Indian food, music and dance to the rest of New
Zealand.
As such, it is a chance for all New Zealanders to appreciate the rich contribution your
community makes to our society. Today, Indians are our fastest growing ethnic group with
more than 157,000 Indians living here. In addition, we share many strong links which we
celebrate at this time from our commitment to democracy to our love affair with cricket.
It also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the contributions our Indian communities make

Twenty years ago Diwali was mainly celebrated at

home by the Indian Community. Today it is a public event celebrated not
only by those of Indian descent but also by others across our diverse

It is great to see Diwali in New Zealand has grown to be enjoyed with

large celebrations in our cities and in gatherings across the
country. Diwali is also celebrated passionately in Parliament as a
notable event.

New Zealand, and particularly Auckland, is increasingly multicultural.

As an immigrant, I realise the importance of preserving ones culture.
Our migrant communities continue to grow and having a familiar
constant is vital for migrants to have continuity as they settle into
their new homes.

I hope everyone will take Diwali to their communities and share the

ANZ hosts Diwali celebrations

for community in style

NZ Bank hosted its annual
Diwali celebrations in style
this year on Friday, October
13 at Sudima Hotel in Mangere, by
recognising several relatively unsung
achievers within the community.
The event was adorned by
distinguished guests from all walks
of life in the community including
Bhav Dhillon, the newly appointed
Honorary Consul of India, Harish
Lodhia, Honorary Consul of Fiji,
Bhiku Bhana, President New
Zealand Indian Central Associations
(NZICA), National party MP Dr
Parmjeet Parmar, Labour MP
Priyanca Radhakrishnan, along with
many others.
The event witnessed two classical
performances by upcoming and
noted performers in the community.
The guests were welcomed by
Andrew Webster, the General
Manager of ANZ Bank for Auckland
Region, who reiterated the Banks
leadership in migrant banking and
the commitment in supporting the
wider Kiwi-Indian community
in NZ, especially regarding their
banking needs.
However, the star attraction of the
event, indeed, was the recognition
given to a few high-achievers who
have been working quietly within the
community in different fields such
as business leadership, community
work among others.
ANZ partnered with New
Zealand Indian Central Association
(NZICA) to select four individuals
for the awards under four different
categories.
Dhansukh Lal, the General
Manager of Mitre 10 Megastores
in Henderson and Botany was
felicitated with the 2017 ANZ Diwali
Entrepreneur Award. Mr Lal has
been actively serving the community
for the past 25 years, has volunteered
in many community associations
and he was instrumental in setting
up the Facebook page for Radha
Krishna Mandir. His two mega stores
employ more than 280 staff, and his
businesses have made a significant
impact in the community.
The 2017 ANZ Diwali Migrant
Support Award was given to Beant
Singh Jador who was integral in
establishing the first Sikh temple
in New Zealand in Hamilton City
followed by the Gurudwara in
Papatoetoe. Mr Jador has helped
set up the NZ Punjabi Cultural
Association to help foster our Indian
language and culture for the young
children and youth. The recipient is
supporting the NZICA Law & Order
committee which is currently liaising
with the Government on the hot
issue of Crime for our local Indian
community and other communities.
Vanisa Dhiru, the recently
appointed President of National
Council of Women New Zealand
(NCWNZ), was awarded the 2017
ANZ Young Achiever Award. Ms
Dhiru was on the list of 50 Women
of Achievement 2016 Women to
watch about progressing gender
equality, and a finalist for some
awards in the past including Young
New Zealander of the Year in 2010
and she has since been an Executive
Judge for the NZ Awards.
The 2017 ANZ Diwali Community
Spirit was bestowed to Manisha
Morar, who is serving the community
through a not for profit organisation
and has gone the extra mile without
any financial aid or expecting
anything in return. Ms Morar has
been serving in many community
roles, has been the coordinator of
the Diwali Mela for 18 years and
was the historian for Wellington
Indian Association in 2010. Her
research on the Indian ANZACs was
made public on the centennial of the
Gallipoli landings in 2015 and in
December this year; her research is
to be displayed permanently at the
Wellington Dominion War Museum.

Diwali Festival makes Auckland city an exciting place

he organisers behind Auckland Diwali
festival are gushing at the success of
the event as it succeeded in meeting
expectations of festival goers.
The Indian Weekender spoke with Eric
Ngan, Diwali Festival Event Producer ATEED
(Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic
Development), the events arm of the Auckland
Council, about how successful this event was
and to what extent it could improve in future.
How was the event? Would you rate it as a
success?
We had a very successful weekend with tens
of thousands of Aucklanders of all backgrounds
attending each day of the event, with the added
bonus of fine weather on both days.
How was this festival different from the last
edition?
This year we introduced a Healthy Menu
Challenge for our stallholders, designed to
encourage stallholders to sell food that is
not only delicious, but also designed for a
healthier balanced diet. This was introduced
in partnership with Auckland Regional Public
Health Service.

The other most noteworthy difference
was the staging of the Barfoot & Thompson
fireworks finale from the roof of Q Theatre.
This allowed for an increased viewing footprint
for festival-goers on Queen Street and Mayoral
Drive. Traditionally, fireworks have been
staged from the Aotea Centre roof. This is part
of the ongoing fine-tuning of the layout of the
festival, to continue to improve the experience
for festival-goers.
How important are corporate sponsors for
this event?
Sponsors are an essential part of any major
event. Without their investment and support,
we simply could not deliver an event of this
size, scale and quality. Their contributions
help grow, develop and sustain the event long-
term, helping make the festival less reliant on
ratepayer contributions. ATEED makes no
profit from the Auckland Diwali Festival.
Our festival team works closely with our
sponsors to design their activities or specific
segments of the event, like The Indian
Weekender Mr and Ms Diwali competition, so
all the elements work well together to create an
exciting and entertaining festival.
Events like this give our partners the
opportunity to engage with significant numbers
of people of all age groups and ethnicities over
a very short period.
Do you think this festival is doing enough to
connect with the communities?
We have regular communication with our
Diwali Community Advisory Group, and take
guidance with their experience and knowledge.
We always do a thorough debrief after our
events, looking at what works and what could be
improved. In that process, we capture feedback
and word of mouth, stallholders and suppliers
and other festival stakeholders.
We are always open to new ideas and ways
to develop the festival. The Diwali Festival is
a must-do event on Aucklands major events
calendar, and wed encourage anyone with a

What do you know of the appetite of
Aucklanders about this festival?
We survey festival-goers, and we also have a
very engaged online community for our cultural
events, with about 15-20,000 people indicating
or confirming their interest in attending the
festival on Facebook before the event each year.
For the 2016 Auckland Diwali Festival, 90
per cent of respondents said they were satisfied
or very satisfied with the event.
These events also have a wider impact,
helping make Auckland a more exciting and
inclusive city, where talented people want
to stay or move to. For example, in 2016, 93
per cent said Diwali helped make Auckland a
more exciting place to live; 90 per cent agreed
it brought people from different cultures and
ethnicities together; and 85 per cent said it
increased their pride in Auckland.
This is one of Aucklands most popular
annual events, with tens of thousands of people
attending each year.
Are you satisfied with ATEEDs effort
behind this festival?
The team does an amazing job. Planning for
Diwali starts about nine months in advance,
and our team works closely with a wider
programming team with strong ties to Auckland
Indian communities, dance and music schools,
and performers, our sponsors and a large team
of volunteers.
As well as ensuring an entertaining and
exciting festival, we work hard to ensure all our
events are safe, secure and accessible. This is
and a lot of hard work goes into delivering the
Diwali Festival.
According to you what are the aspects of this
festival that could be further improved?
We are always looking at how we can
improve our events. We want to maintain the
cultural integrity of the festival, and continue
to introduce elements that better inform
non-Indian communities about traditional
and contemporary Indian culture and the
significance of Diwali.
As well as thinking about how we can
improve festival-goers experiences, we also
continue to work with our stallholders and
suppliers to provide healthier options in menus,
reduce waste, and improve accessibility.
One improvement which is working really
well is the street performance area between the
food and craft stalls that makes for an organic
performance and participation experience for
festival-goers and an enlarged street programme
reflects the appetite for that.
Do you think that the festival needs to move
on to a better place with more area and
parking arrangement?
Theres something to be said for staging
the festival in the central city, it creates a real
vibrancy and excitement. However, we know
there is a considerable amount of development
going on in the city, and public transport
services and festival access are always key
considerations.
Longer term, moving to a different venue
may be just what the festival needs to ensure we
can continue to develop and expand the festival
and comfortably accommodate the crowds it
attracts.
For our events, we always work closely
with Auckland Transport, to make sure people
are aware of all their travel options, including
public transport and active options like cycling
and walking.

that a visa was being issued to Shehriyar, son
of Saqib Shahzad, for a bone marrow transplant
surgery in India. "There is a request for medical
visa for 5-year-old child Anamta Farrukh who
is suffering from eye cancer for her treatment in
India," she said in a separate tweet.
She said she had told the Indian mission to
issue medical visa for the child immediately.

Glamour adds sparkle to festival of lights

A
uckland celebrated the Indian festival
of light, Diwali, last weekend
with various communities joining
the celebrations.
The Indian Weekender has been a proud
sponsor of the annual festival since 2013 and
has been bringing Indian Weekender Mr and
Ms Diwali contest from last year.
In its second year, the contest grew bigger
this time with more contestants, better prizes
and bigger audience.
After auditioning nearly 100 contestants, 14
were chosen to showcase their personalities
in front of thousands of people on the Diwali
stage. And only two emerged winners.
The judges theatre artist Rupal Solanki,
DJ Areeb Taimoori of Bollywood Affair,
and beauty expert Sandeep Raju of Body
Contours had a hard time choosing the
winners as each of the contestants posed strong
competition.
From their style, the ramp walk, outfits,
innovation,time-management to talentthey
were tested on various aspects.
This years titles went to Anchal Marwah for
Indian Weekender Mr Diwali and Sonia Mehta
for Indian Weekender Ms Diwali, while Prince passed on their titles to this years winners. You can check out the photos
