Shaolin Temple was erected in 485 CE on one of China's five holy mountains, Mount Song. It is a
significant site for martial and Buddhist pilgrims. Here, the eminent monk, Bodhidharma (a.k.a.
Tamo) founded both Kung Fu and Zen (a.k.a. Chan). Beijing is home to many top notch masters of a vari-
ety of arts both internal and external and is an excellent location for weapon shopping.
This tour offers you a unique chance to experience the martial arts of China, like you never thought
possible! You will learn the widest range of China's precious Kung Fu, from traditional external training at

Hung Gar hand techniques stress ambidexterity and use simultaneous blocking and
striking. The blocking maneuvers of Hung Gar were well-known and feared. Opponents
often thought twice before challenging a Hung Gar practitioner, for if a block could numb
an attacker's limb, how much more painful must a strike be? The training is grueling and
highly demanding and fits well the student who is physically strong and compact, of mus-
cular build and who possesses great endurance. There are many legendary stories of Hung
Gar students who practiced standing in a horse stance for the length of time it took an
incense stick to burn completely, generally speaking this took from one to three hours.
WLEs instructional videos are a complete system. It includes hand, weapon, and
sparring sets of Canton Hung Gar, and the Hay Say Fu system of Hung Gar. The sets
include traditional Hung Gar forms, supplemented by sets from other systems. Each form
builds on the basic skills of Kung Fu but each emphasizes a different ability. There are
seventeen weapon sets, covering the four basic weapons - staff, broadsword, spear and
straight sword - as well as more exotic weapons, including the long pole, hoe, double but-
terfly knives, trident, long handle knife, Tiger Head Shields, bench and round shield. The
sparring sets complete the Hung Gar curriculum. These sets include hand and weapon
sets, such as the Tiger and Crane Sparring Set, Empty Hands vs Butterfly Swords, Spear
versus Butterfly Swords, and Long Staff versus Long Staff.

I
had been studying Hung Gar, an external form of Kung Fu, for several years
before I began studying Xing Yi. I had just completed learning a couple of
weapon sets when Sifu Wing Lam asked me what I wanted to learn next.
My response was that I wanted to learn more weapons. Sifu suggested I
learn Xing Yi. I said "sure", even though I had very little idea of what Xing Yi was
and I didn't think it involved a lot of weapons. The truth was I thought it was a
good idea because Sifu thought it was a good idea. As it turned out, it was an excel-
lent idea.
As with many of the martial arts, the origin of Xing Yi is subject to some
debate. The origin is often attributed to Marshall Yeuh Fei who lived during
the Song Dynasty of the 12th century AD. Whatever the origin might have
been, one thing is clear, Marshall Fei used Xing Yi as an effective way to
train his troops. This is because there are rela-
tively few movements in Xing Yi, the fighting
principles are straightforward, and so the prac-
tioner can acquire skill and apply the knowledge
more quickly. An added benefit of Xing Yi train-
ing is that it also conditions the vital organs of
the body, which I will discuss below.
5 ELEMENTS
Learning the forms of Xing Yi begins with the five basic elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Each element is defined by the energy
it exhibits and is also linked to a specific organ of the body. Metal represents energy that is heavy and is linked to the lungs. It is sometimes
referred to as splitting energy. The energy used is like that of swinging an axe. Wood represents energy that smashes (out) and is linked to the
liver. Water represents energy that drills (up) and is related to the kidneys. Fire represents energy which is explosive and relates to the heart.
It is sometimes referred to as pounding energy. And Earth represents crossing energy and is linked to the spleen. The energy in earth is circu-
lar, like that of a ball. Traditionally, these elements are learned in this order, although earth is thought to give rise to all others. Practiced cor-
rectly, each of these elements is thought to strengthen the particular organ.

there can be no fall. In practicing wood, there
must first be energy pulling in before there is
energy smashing out. A common mistake on
wood is to focus on the punching hand. This is
external. Rather, the focus should be on
pulling the front hand back. This allows the Fig.3
rear hand to punch quickly out. And since it is
linked with the rest of the body, it is stronger.

ith Chinese weaponry, commercial swords have tended toward two
extremes: the very light and flexible for performance and ease, or the
very heavy and unwieldy for training. Neither of these extremes is very
realistic as a weapon or very close to the armaments of old. Searching for a sword
of more traditional parameters, Sifu Wing Lam finally came up with a solution
that will be very pleasing to traditional martial artists. He has commissioned the
sword forges in China to create traditional heavy weight combat weapons

Nunchaku
I have always been attracted to "two person"-sparing types of exercise because of what they teach you. When we first start learning a system of
martial arts, Chinese Martial Arts in particular, we learn the basics of stance, punching, kicking and hand and limb conditioning. From here we
move into the elementary forms where we learn individual techniques strung together in a form of preset movements. These forms, when
mastered, allow us to flow from one technique to another with no conscience thought to the change. With each new form, we are exposed to
new techniques but we are also exposed to new transitions into and out of techniques that we already have learned in prior forms. At this point
in a students training, and understandably so, they might feel like they are able to fight off the whole world. However this is just the beginning
for the next phase of their training.
For an analogy, consider someone who is learning to speak a foreign language. They study their books, listen to their tapes and practice with
their teacher and fellow students. But anyone who has been this far in learning a new language, and has tried to apply what they know in a real
44
world situation, knows the limitations of their skill. When
you try to communicate with people whose primary language
is the one you are learning, you feel like you have jumped
into the deep end of the pool and the life lifeguard has just
gone on his break. This is true for martial arts as well. At this
point in our training we fight nothing but air or (if we are
really concentrating) an imaginary opponent. This opponent
is always in just the right position for us to apply the
technique, always the correct height, weight and distance. In
other words, this opponent speaks our new language just as
well and just as slow as we do. Here is where the two person
sparing form comes in, taking us to the next step. It teaches
us how to allow for opponents that are taller/shorter,
bigger/smaller and stronger/weaker. It teaches us how to
bridge a real distance between you and them, react to and
sense the tempo of their movement and know the cost (in Class in session with Sifu Wing Lam
pain) of what it is like to make a mistake. In theory, two person very "sticky", always keeping contact with my arms. They only had
exercises are tools used in the transition from solo forms to a real to push you ever so slightly and you knew you were off balance and
free fight situation. In practice, two person training can be much beaten. Some were a bit harder, striving to get softer but
more. But this is the subject of another article and I will leave it for instinctively falling back on their external training when being up
another time. With all this being said, I never considered Tai Chi rooted or trying to uproot their opponent. Others seem to have the

my Sifu's point of view - a point of view that never ceases to amaze goal being to push their opponent off balance and missing the

a lot about yourself in a situation like this. I found out early what

deflect him at the moment just before he is fully
extended. This was easy enough until my back leg grew
tired. But how could this be? I can stand in a horse
stance for 45 minutes; why are my legs getting tired? I
soon found out that it was because I was using my leg
mussels and not the ligaments in my hip an ankle to
maintain my balance and position. And my shoulder
was killing me! I looked at the clock for the first time.
Only a half an hour had passed! I thought the clock had
stopped! After a little more single-handed pushing, Sifu
started teaching us two handed pushing. At first, two
handed pushing was very confusing, compounded by
the fact that we kept switching partners. Every time I
was just getting in the groove with one, we would
switch. Being 6 foot 4 inches tall, there was no one in
the class as tall as me so it seemed that all my "next"
partners were pushing up towards me while I was
pushing down towards them.
I will conclude this article by recommending that ANY martial artist regardless of
method or style take a push hands class. Why? What could this offer anyone who
is not an internal stylist? Well, at the high level of the martial arts, the results are
the same. Where the externalist starts hard, they will learn when to be soft. The
internalist starts off soft and learns when to be hard. Both start at each end of the
martial spectrum and strive towards the other end. Tai Chi push hands is a tool, just
like any other sparing set, that increases the students exposure to a real live partner.
It teaches the student to use his perception, his sixth sense if you will to discern an
opponent's intention even before they know what they will do. It can teach you
about human nature and teach you a lot about yourself. Oh I forgot.it can also
be a hell of a lot of fun too!
