Fire and Evacuation Drills - Emergency Procedures

The Center Manager will be responsible for leading and ensuring that procedures are followed. In the event
that the Center Director is absent, the Assistant Manager will assume responsibility for supervising the
emergency procedure.

A. Rules for Fire Drills


The fire drills will be planned by the ADS Director. She/he will be responsible scheduling monthly fire
drills to ensure compliance with MN Fire Code as well as DHS regulations. Documentation for each
drill will be recordedincluding date, time of day, all participants, employees and volunteers that
participant in the drill. Documentation will also occur in the chart of each participant involved.
Expectations:
R. Remove all people from danger
A. Alert staff by pulling nearest fire alarm
C. Confine fire by closing doors to area
E. Extinguish the fire

B. Evacuation Procedure
1. The evacuation procedure is designed in accordance with the building floor plan. Depending
upon the location of the fire the appropriate evacuation route will be determined. Primary
exit will be: ________________________________________________________________
2. To assure safe and rapid evacuation, staff and participants will be trained and have rehearsed
evacuation.

3. Individual staff members have responsibilities and definite areas to cover during an
evacuation. These include:
a. Center Manager: Secures daily attendance sheet and emergency cards for staff and
employees and first aid kit. Checks bathrooms, kitchen and rooms to ensure everyone
is out.
b. Assistant Manager: Leads evacuation with ambulatory/mobile participants. Remain
in spot with all those evacuated.
Lead roll call to ensure all are accounted for.

c. Program Coordinators/ADS Assistants:


Responsible for evacuating non-ambulatory members in wheel chairs and any
remaining individuals. Responsible for staying with the group at all times and
ensuring participants stay at designated location.

5. The participant charts are located in the metal cabinet office. If time and safety allow, the
Center Manager will re-enter and retrieve the documents.

6. The Fire Department will be contacted when any fire is found within the center, even if the
fire has been extinguished.

7. All staff and volunteers will be trained in which participants will need assistance with
evacuation. In addition, the self-preservation status of each will be maintained in their
individual charts.

8. Staff will review all participants with each Fire Drill to determine their ability to safely
evacuate on a self-preserving basis. Any participant who is not able to meet the minimal
defined standards will have their status changed within 72 hours.

C. Fire Protection and Detection

Fire Extinguisher Instructions:


1.) Hold can up right, pull ring pin.
2.) Stand back 8 feet.
3.) Aim at base of fire and squeeze lever.
4.) Sweep side to side.
