Hello Viking Students and Parents/Guardians:

We are getting ready to kick off Lowes Grove Magnet Middle Schools 4th Science Fair for grades 6-8!
In order to continually prepare our students for high school, future career positions, global competition,
decisions, and coursework, all students are required to participate in the Science Fair. This is a major project
and will represent a significant portion of your childs grade for the next quarter. Each part of the science fair
project is a grade. Please adhere to all of the due dates.

This years Science Fair is scheduled for January 18, 2018. Below is a schedule outlining due dates.
Ample time has been scheduled and work has been spread out, so that students can complete the work at a
comfortable pace.
Part 1 Submit topic of interest, problem, research, and category.
DUE on November 7, 2017
Part 2 My research is complete and I am ready to begin my experiment. This is my hypothesis, a list
of my materials, and the procedure I will follow.
DUE on December 5, 2017
Part 3 I may now begin the experiment. My written report is FINISHED.
DUE on December 18, 2017.
Part 4- I have revised my written report. My written report and completed poster and project are DUE on
January 17, 2018.

This project must be experimental in nature- requiring research, experimentation, data collection, and
report writing. In other words, students must do a test, survey, or experiment to determine the answer to their
question instead of just looking it up in a book. We encourage students to select topics they are genuinely
interested in because they will be working on these projects for the next couple of months. Topics must also be
original something students do not already know.

Students may work individually or in groups of up to two members each. To encourage all group
members to share equally in the work, grades will be given individually based on one of the specific tasks each
student selects. Also, project guidelines state that students must do all work; however, assistance may be
provided by teachers, parents, etc.

Our schools Science Fair is the first step in participating in the NC Regional Science Fair. Students who
complete a First, Second, or Third Place Science Fair project at our schools Science Fair will be considered for
participation in the NC Regional Science Fair.

We look forward to working with you and your child to make this a valuable learning experience. We
appreciate your support on this important project. As acknowledgement and part of your childs homework,
please sign, date, and return this letter by Tuesday, October 17, 2017.

Thank you,

Dr. Mitchell and the LGMS Science Teachers
