Answer all the questions and dont mix-up Part-A with other answers.
Only non-programmable calculator is allowed
Part A (Marks: 5 x 2 = 10)
1. List down non-chemical rockets.
2. Write the thrust equation for a jet engine and also give the thrust in adapted condition.
3. Draw a simple solid rocket motor showing all its main parts.
4. What is the use of solid rockets in the space shuttle launch vehicle and what are they called?
5. Draw the cross section of a double anchor grain design.
Part B (Marks: 2 x 16 = 32) M Mo BT
6 (a) (i) Explain the main criteria on which choice of propellants are made. (8) 1 1
(ii) Also explain, why the mixture ratio selected for the rocket performance is (8) 1 3
a fuel rich mixture ratio.
(OR)
(b) (i) What do you mean by saying combustion model? Mention two (8) 1 1
combustion models applicable to the AP based composite propellant
and explain one of them in details.
(ii) Define burn rate of solid propellant. Also draw a neat sketch of (8) 1 1
Crawford type strand burner mentioning its all main parts.
7 (a) (i) Draw a typical schematic diagram of a liquid propellant rocket engine (4) 1 2
and mention the main parts of it.
(ii) Classify liquid propellants based upon energy content, ignitability and (12) 1 1
storability.
(OR)
(b) (i) Write short notes on the propellant tanks and discuss the various designs (8) 1 2
for the propellant tanks available

(ii) Explain the following problems with pictures faced in the liquid (8) 1 2
propellant rocket; and also give their remedy.
1. Slosh, 2. Geysering
Part C (Marks: 1 x 8 = 8)
8 Butane is burning in the presence of oxygen. Find the stoichiometric 8 1 4
mixture ratio ( ) for the complete combustion. In another case if
116 grams of butane burns with 352 grams of oxygen. Write the
balanced equation and find the mole fraction of carbon monoxide.
