the benefits outweigh the extra

“The cost is a little bit higher
than what a regular building
would be but the return you get
back in energy savings makes the
expense well worth it,” Hopkins
said.

For many years, Berry College has prided
itself on a student work program that provides
a meaningful work experience for students.
This year, the program will undergo many
changes in order to better accomplish this.
Along with Enterprise Development and
the Career Center, the Office of Student Work
and Experiential Learning has been moved to
report to Enrollment Management, which also
houses financial aid and admissions rather
than the Office of the Provost where it previ-
ously reported.
Vice President of Enrollment Management
Gary Waters said this move would facilitate
work experiences that better involve students’
interests.
“The synergy between student work, stu-
dent enterprises and career services will make
a significant difference in the college’s ability
to integrate students’ experience in the work
program that support their career and voca-
tional aspirations,” Waters said.
Dean of Student Work and Experiential
Learning Mike Burnes said the merger of the
three offices under Enrollment Management
would serve to better prepare students for a
career after graduation.
“I joked that our new division slogan
should be ‘Hook ‘Em and Cook ‘Em,’” Burnes
said. “[admissions and financial aid] hook ‘em,
[student work, Enterprise Development and
the Career Center] cook ‘em and then when
you graduate, you’re fully baked.”
In addition to the realignment of offices,
student work will seek to use student work-
ers in new, creative ways, including after nor-
mal operating business hours and in student
teams. Assistant Vice President of Enterprise
Development Rufus Massey has also begun to
organize off-campus work opportunities.
“The idea is to establish a certain number of
relationships with local and regional compa-
nies and organizations,” Massey said. “We’re
beginning to place students in roles that relate
to their major and can parlay into a full-time
position. This is another enhancement to our
already premier student work program.”
The student work preference form that is
completed at the beginning of a student’s time
at Berry is also being improved to achieve
greater relevance to the student’s interests,
both academically and professionally.
Waters said one of the ultimate goals of the
student work program is to craft a profession-
al resume for a student.

Textbooks now for rent at Berry bookstore

Buying textbooks has become a
thing of the past at Berry College.
This semester, the Berry book-
store is offering the option of rent-
ing textbooks for students.
Rent-a-text, the program Berry
is participating in, is being used
because of the variety it brings

“We are eager to launch Rent-
a-text because we are committed
to providing students with afford-
able textbook choices,” Loveless
said.
In order to rent, students may
either select their books online or
in the store. Either way, students
are able to pick up their books in
the bookstore Loveless said.
Students can pay for the rental
by cash, check, credit or finan-
cial aid. Regardless of payment
method, students have the option
of converting their textbook into a
purchase during their rental time.
Before a student can rent a
book, they have to complete a
rental agreement, be 18 years old,
show an ID and provide a credit
card number as collateral.
Loveless said the bookstore
has instated the rent-a-text pro-
gram to help students find the
best prices for their books.
“Rent-a-text will offer students
upwards of 50 percent off the price
of new textbooks and will provide
students with an affordable alter-
native to rising education costs,”
Loveless said.
Loveless said the rented books
should be returned by a date that
will be on their receipt. However,
if students fail to return the book
on time, then they will be charged
non-return and processing fees.
Loveless said students are able
to return rented books if they drop
the class during the designated
return period at the beginning of
the semester.
Students said they would con-
sider renting some of their books
from the bookstore.
“I might rent my books for
my [general education] classes,
but for my regular major classes,
I’ll buy those,” said senior Kari
Theobald. “I know that I’ll want
to keep them for sure.”
Other students said they would
use other textbook rental options
such as Chegg.com.
“I feel like renting books [at the
bookstore] would be more expen-
sive than using Chegg. Chegg was
great,” junior Lauren Hicks said.
“When I returned my books, they
gave me a lot of free stuff, like a
bottle opener which I’ll never use,
a box and they planted a tree for
every book I rented. What more
could you want?
Like rent-a-text, Chegg.com
offers students highly discounted
rates on rental books. The com-
pany will also accept books back
up to 30 days after the order, and
they will refund the customer’s
money. Chegg.com will also pur-
chase books that are in “very good
to better condition” as stated on
their website.
Students who have already
used other rental outlets said they
plan on using them again instead
of the bookstore.

Despite their efforts to shift students off campus,
however, Goshorn said his department did not receive
quite the response they had hoped for.
“It was surprising,” he said. “We didn’t have the
numbers we thought we would, most likely because of
the timing. It was summer, and students had already
picked a place and either they were happy with it or had
decided it’s where they were going to be, so they didn’t
apartment.”
The current housing policy allows only a select few
students, mostly fifth-year seniors, to live off campus.
Neither Briggs nor Goshorn gave any indication that the
growth of the college would cause any reason for chang-
ing that policy.
Briggs did say, however, that the college plans on cap-
ping their acceptance numbers at around 600 students,
but that the recent rise in admissions doesn’t necessarily
reflect a decline in admission standards.
“Percentage-wise we aren’t accepting any more stu-
dents than we traditionally do,” he said. “We haven’t
lowered the qualifications for admission at all.”
Goshorn said he welcomed growth to a certain extent,
but hoped Berry would remain true to its origins as a
smaller school.
“I’d love to see Berry grow, obviously,” he said. “But
I don’t want it to ever be a big university.”
Briggs said the rise in admission of first-year students
combined with the spike in the retention rate of return-
ing students means good things for the future of Berry
College.
“These numbers are just a testament that things are
really going well here,” he said. “And we’d like to con-
tinue that trend.”

Conn selected for fellowship, leaving Berry for for one year

Bruce Conn, professor of biology and dean
of the School of Mathematical and Natural
Sciences, is extending beyond the domain of
exams and sleepy-eyed students to test the
waters of foreign policy.
Conn will spend the next year in Washing-
ton, D.C. as part of the esteemed Jefferson Sci-
ence Fellowship. During the six-year program,
Conn will be serving as an advisor to the State
Department, continuing in a consulting posi-
tion for the remaining five years after return-
ing to Berry College in the fall of 2011.
During the time that Conn will be away
from Berry, Tom Kennedy, dean of the Evans
School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sci-
ences, will be taking over the responsibilities
of the dean of the School of Mathematical and
Natural Sciences. Kennedy said he will aid
the departments in various ways, with the
help of Julee Tate, associate professor of for-
eign languages and Gary Breton, professor of
chemistry.
A highly competitive program, the Jefferson
Science Fellowship requires the awardees to
be very well-known scientists, bring a bounty
of research and a notable network. Conn is one
of only 12 scientists and engineers to receive
the honor this year. Kennedy said it is great
for Berry as well as Conn to be associated with
something so prestigious.
“I’m delighted that he was granted this
opportunity,” Kennedy said. “This will
increase Berry’s reputation, knowing about
our existence and the work we do.”
In the late 1990s, Conn said he became
more interested in foreign policy and how it
relates to scientific pursuit. Conn said his posi-
tion with the State Department will allow him
to advise others on scientific issues.
“I have, over the years, been involved
internationally with scientific organizations,”
Conn said. “I view science as a global enter-
prise; most of the scientific issues are global.
I’ll be working on foreign policy issues that
take it a step further. It’s about using science
as a way to help countries get along.”

a new academic year.
This year, Berry faces a record
incoming class, with the cur-
rent estimate of undergraduate
enrollment figures at 1925, about
150 more students than last year,
when Berry claimed 1777 under-
grad students.
This influx of new students
causes concern for many reasons,
not the least of which is the hous-
ing debacle that took place dur-
ing the summer, in which over a
hundred students were shuffled
around in a mandatory game
of musical chairs a la Residence
Life. While there have been other
inconvenient adverse effects of
the high number of students
admitted, the primary concern
is the long-term effect such rapid
growth is going to have both on
the quality of education students
receive and the school’s academic
status.
Berry prides itself in having a
low student-to-faculty ratio, cur-
rently at 11.3-3, but if the growth
trend continues, then Berry is
going to be constantly hiring new
faculty members to maintain that
ratio. While the faculty count is
rushing to catch up with admis-
sions, students will be looking at
bloated class sizes and busier pro-
fessors with shorter office hours,
which translates to professors
who don’t have time to discuss
questions thoroughly, involve
themselves in campus events or

One of the things about Berry
that makes it a cut above the rest
is the faculty’s willingness to
answer questions about tests, lec-
tures or reading material during
office hours, and some will even
help develop ideas for papers.
Swamping professors with
additional grades to turn in may
encourage them to reduce the
number of tests and quizzes they
administer. Although this may
initially seem like a welcome
change, fewer grades means
increasing weight on the remain-
ing grades.
No one wants to be halfway
through the semester when they
find out they are failing a class
after getting their first test back.
Finals, which have historically
composed as little as 10 percent
of final grades, would then carry
more weight, causing additional
stress during exam week.
With less time to grade papers
and tests, professors will inevita-
bly have to prioritize, which may
result in more attention going to
upper-level classes at the expense
of the enormous freshman class,
which will still be acclimating to
Berry academics.
This poses a problem for the
future if this year’s incoming
class moves up on a roller coaster
of C’s and still does not possess
the know-how to succeed in
college.
Additionally, many professors
involve themselves in campus
activities, even heading up new
student organizations, and some
are frequently seen in Krannert
Lobby conversing with students.
Heavier class loads will inevita-
bly cut into the free time profes-
sors spend on campus, which will
significantly impact the personal
feel of academics at Berry.
If Berry is receiving a higher
number of applications, then
it might be worth considering
higher admissions standards,
which would thwart many prob-
lems at once and increase the
value of a Berry education for all
of us.

Tragic, isn’t it?
Now that we’re all on our way to
becoming big boys and girls, it’s high
time we started acting like it. This is the
time of year during which resolutions
are made. I’m not saying don’t try to
budget your money, lose weight, call
home more often or get better grades.
But please, for the sake of yourself and
others, resolve to take responsibility
for your own actions.
I’m tired of presenting issues to peo-
ple and having the problem pushed off
to someone else. It seems like more and
more often I have been hearing things
like “Oh, well you have to turn that
form in to someone else,” “Oh, well
I haven’t heard anything about that,”
or my personal favorite “That’s not my

One of my friends recently told me
that she could not understand how I
was able to stand listening to the music
I did.
“How can you listen to that crap?”
she asked me. “They don’t even use
real instruments.”
The question got me thinking about
why I liked that particular song. “It’s
different,” I thought.
Having been a part of bands and
orchestras for the better part of the last
decade, I enjoy listening to a variety of
music.
Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy
cranking up some Tchaikovsky or
Beethoven on the stereo every once in a
while as well, but as they say, “variety
is the spice of life.”
It would be easy for me to criti-
cize my peers for listening to specific
genres or artists because of my musical
background, but if anything all that the
music theory and composition courses
have taught me is that individuality
and diversity are key to becoming a
successful artist.
I often hear the phrases “Be your-
self” or “Don’t give into peer pres-
sure.” While they are most often meant
to steer young people away from nega-

mail a package, trying to work with the
IRS or watching Congress run around

remind President Obama that George
W. Bush left office two years ago.
My roommate and I had to deal with
an egregious lapse of personal respon-
sibility earlier last week. We were both
supposed to move into our residence
hall on separate, pre-determined days
but when we arrived, someone else’s
belongings, trash and spoiled food
were strewn across living space. It was
nothing short of disgusting. Long story
short, the rest of last week (and most
of this week) has been spent trying to
make the place livable. When this indi-
vidual discovered the inconvenience
we encountered, the reaction was noth-
ing short of indifferent.
All of this could have been avoided
if this individual had just moved out at
the designated time.
Both of us appreciate the efforts
from members of Residence Life,
housekeeping and physical plant this
past week to give us an acceptable liv-
ing area. Although one could argue
that the residence never should have

sonal preferences.
We all want to be individual and
stand out in a group, and your taste
in music is a very easy way to express
yourself. Whether you enjoy listening
to Justin Bieber, Disney music or the
London Philharmonic Orchestra, you
should not care what others have to
say, just listen to what pleases you.
I hold the distinct belief that music
is created in everyday life – clicking
high heels, wind blowing through the
trees or cars driving by on the freeway.
Music is whatever we enjoy listening
to. Whether it follows certain chord
progressions or time constraints, it
does not matter.
We have all seen small children
– and sometimes even grown-ups –
banging on random pieces of furniture
or cookware to perform for their audi-
ence. They are creating something and
music, like art, has no limitations.
In addition to listening to the types
of music that please you, you should
also respect the musical opinions of
others. In other words, don’t be a music
snob!
The music I enjoy listening to goes
beyond genres to specific artists and
songs, and sometimes even to small
parts of songs. It would be hypocriti-
cal of me to say that I do not have my
own musical preferences, because I do
have them.
Generally speaking, I avoid the
“country” genre. I imagine that coun-

Generation Me? Not the Berry experience

Welcome to Berry and to the new academic year.
I join others in welcoming the new members of our
community and welcoming back those of you for
whom this is already home.
There’s been much written about the Millennial
Generation and many are dubbing you “Generation
Me.” Summer reading for some of us included The
Narcissism Epidemic, Living in the Age of Entitle-
ment and the authors make the case that narcissism
is not just rampant among college students but has
become pervasive across age groups in our society.
While debating both the statistics and the resulting
assumptions, if this is true what does it mean for a
Berry education?
Berry has, from its founding, been a place that
was committed to bringing young people to cam-
pus to educate them and then to help them return
to their world prepared to make it different, make it
better. And to do that, we ask you to do two things
in tandem – find out who you are and what your
talents are while asking that you commit yourself to
serving others. It is one of many paradoxes you’ll
confront as a young adult and a member of the Berry
community.
Several years ago, I was privileged to be part
of a program that included the renowned Harvard
psychologist and author Robert Coles. He told us
of his letters to his mother his first year at Harvard.
He wrote weekly and would get a weekly response.

After several months, he received a letter from his
mother that included a question (paraphrased from
my memory), “Bobby, I enjoy getting your letters but
isn’t there anyone else at Harvard? Your letters are
all about you. Certainly there must be many inter-
esting people there.” The paradox of college is to
help each student learn about themselves – who are
you? what do you believe in? what do you value?
how does your faith inform your life and your work?
are you working to your potential? — yet also learn
that no one person is the focus of the universe. Most
of you have heard me quote Frederick Buechner at
SOAR in saying that your calling is “where your
deep gladness meets the world’s deep need.” Who
you are is important – learning where you can make
a difference is equally as important.
So whether you are new to Berry this fall or com-
ing back for your senior year, I encourage you to use
the introspective and applied parts of your Berry
experience not just as a means of becoming the best
you can be but to also discover the ways that you
can make a difference be it on your residence hall
floor, as you help a student with a class problem, as
you lead a student organization or a work team, as
you volunteer in the Rome community, as you make
plans for your graduation and life after Berry.
I hope others can look at Berry students as affir-
mation that there are places not defined by narcis-
sism or entitlement but rather by a genuine compas-
sion for and commitment to serve others. Berry is
defined not just by our mission and our motto but
how well we live them out on campus, in Rome, and
in the places you call home today and in the future.

ing biographies about successful
individuals, and sweet tea is my
favorite beverage to gearing back
up for the school year and plan-
ning exciting new initiatives. On

ways to get involved on campus.

early advice. Here’s what I’ve told
my advisees each fall and what I
told my kids when they went off
to college:
1) Go to class. Every class.
Every day. It will pay off for you
in the long run.
2) Explore. Consider new
courses of study, meet new peo-
ple, participate in new activities,
find new places. Figure out what
you like, and what you don’t.
Figure out areas where you excel,
and what you can live without.
Discover new areas of interest.
3) Read. Read books, maga-
zines, newspapers – and websites
too, if you read them critically and
with an eye toward what is veri-
fiable. Read what’s required for
your courses, but read for fun as
well.
4) Manage your time wisely.
Do your work for class. Work
hard at your job. Do something
fun every day, even for just 15

Swap” allows you to purchase
books at a “student friendly”

of Krannert. This week Book-
Swap will be open on Thursday
from 3:00-5:00 and Friday from
11:00-2:00.
I would also encourage you to
start cultivating yourself for lead-
ership. As always, SGA has a way
that you can do this! Each class
has a set of officers which include
a President, Vice President, Trea-
surer, and Secretary. Elections
for your incoming class will be
held soon, and you will soon start
hearing more about this!

6) Don’t be afraid to ask for
help. Ask your faculty, your RA,
the Academic Support Center,
your friends, your family. We
have lots of great people on cam-
pus who are all interested in help-
ing you succeed.
7) Stay on campus for the
weekends for the first half of the
semester. If you want to start feel-
ing at home here, you actually
have to live here.
8) Think about others. How
will you make a difference in the
world? What can you do right
now? We have many opportuni-
ties to volunteer to help people in
our community. Get together with
a couple of friends and help.
9) Call the people who raised
you once a week or so to let them
know you’re ok. (And not just
when you have a problem.) They
miss you.
10) Look up from the cell phone
periodically and marvel at the
beautiful campus around you!

Five F’s for fighting frustration, finding fulfillment

Felicitations First-Year Students! Since the
Fiendish Carrier Editor has forbidden ful-
someness, I offer five F-Words (no, not that
one) that, if faithfully followed, will help you
find fulfillment and fend off failure in your
first year.
Friends. The biggest mistake you can make
is to think that you can do this alone. Make
an effort in these first weeks to reach out and
form connections with classmates in BCC 100
and other classes, your mentor, your room-
mate and hall mates and commuters. Not all
of these people will become your close friends,
but they’ll see you through the first challeng-
ing days, and yes, some of the friendships you
make now may last a lifetime. While you’re
reaching out, get to know your professors and
your academic advisor, your work supervisor,
College life too good to pass up

I liked college so much that I never left.
Seems like a strange thing to say, but it is
very true. The stately buildings, usually featur-
ing proud columns pointing the way to higher
thought, the friendships discovered and nur-
tured in those buildings, and a sense of doing
something extraordinary all conspired to lure
me into the life of a college teacher.
In a life of tremendous highlights, I know
that one highlight at the top of my personal
list is observing a young person diving into
the world of collegiate study with abandon.

Fit. Both connotations of this F-word are
relevant for first year students. First of all, try
to find where you fit in at Berry. Whatever
your interests or talents, you can find a place
to put them to use at Berry. Attend the student
involvement fair on September 2 to learn about
the numerous opportunities to get involved at
Berry. Secondly, staying or getting fit is vital
to your success. With all the stress of the first
weeks, it’s easy to get too little sleep, too many
empty calories, and not enough exercise. A
weekly schedule that includes sitting down
to healthy meals, some form of exercise and
7-8 hours of sleep every day will not only help
you deal with the stress of these early weeks,
but keep you performing at your best through-
out the semester.
Focus. You will find many interests com-
peting for your attention, including your new
friends, your job, those campus organizations
you’ve joined, and your daily visit to the Cage
to work out. So it’s important that you manage
your time effectively from the beginning. Take
sphere that a college offers are indicators that a
student, particularly a new one, “gets it”.
I often say that the busiest students are the
most successful, and I still believe this to be
true. The sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses
who sing in my choirs at Berry College are
resident assistants, Campus Carrier journal-
ists, filmmakers, actors, and members of the
equestrian team. Oh, yes, they also attend
classes and make outstanding grades. They
“get” the college experience at Berry!
Students who “get it” quickly identify
great teachers here and seek their wisdom and
guidance, both in and out of the classroom.
These great teachers may be difficult, but the
influence on young lives they offer serves as a
foundation for a truly great experience here,
and more importantly, as a rock solid basis for
a successful life. Don’t believe me? Ask one of
the thousands of alumni who come back every
October for Mountain Day.

Changes have been made to events to

eted red t-shirt is being replaced with a new,
teal, Viking Weekend t-shirt. We do not have
2,000 t-shirts so be on the lookout for ways to
win your very own shirt!
However, what I can guarantee you is that
these Viking Weekends are 7 weekends you
do not want to miss! They are loaded with fun
events that include free food, paint balloons,
talent, dances, and even a murder mystery.

Forgiveness. You won’t always be focused;
you’ll fall of your fitness plan occasionally;
from time to time your friends will get on your
nerves, and you’ll get on theirs, and sometimes,
you’ll feel you don’t fit it anywhere. The only
remedy is to learn to forgive. Forgive others
for not meeting your expectations and forgive
yourself for not being perfect. And then start
working again toward your goals.
First-Year Experience Office. The office of
First-Year Experience, located in Krannert 331
exists to help new students make a successful
transition to Berry. Along with your first-year
seminar instructor and first-year mentor, we
work hard to help you learn about the many
opportunities and resources for you at Berry,
so that you make the most of all of them. We
measure our success by your success, so please
call on us.
Wisdom at Berry College is also found out-
side of the classroom. Work supervisors are
marvelous resources for important informa-
tion, whether it be how to attend to the birth
of a new foal at the Gunby center or perhaps
how to get an interview with an important
corporate officer.
We love to make music at Berry College.
Martha Berry was keen on great music mak-
ing, and she made sure that vocal and instru-
mental music had a pride of place in campus
events.
We still make music in one form or another
at nearly every event on this campus.
Join us as we make music this year! Join a
choir, a band, a brass ensemble, and become an
integral part of the Berry College community.
Don’t be surprised if a professor, work
supervisor, or fellow student stops you one
day and says, “Wow, you really ‘get it’ here!”
So be sure to mark these weekends on your
calendar!
Most importantly, KCAB is here to serve
the student body, to produce amazing events,
and to be a resource for you to use when plan-
ning your own campus fun.
So please feel free to visit us any time in

Welcome to the nation’s premier Work Experi-
ence College. We are looking forward to seeing you
join the long line of Berry students who have, since
1902, contributed to the college by working.
Our goal is for students to graduate with signifi-
cant work experiences related to their interests.
You will begin your experience by working in
entry-level (Level 1) positions in which you will
develop basic work skills such as dependability, atten-
tion-to-detail, teamwork, and time management.
After your first or second semester in the pro-
gram, you will be eligible for promotion into skilled
(Level 2) positions. As you gain more experience

Many exciting things have happened with the
student enterprises program and much more to
come.
Several potential new enterprises are under
review include a venture tied to the terrific Exer-
cise Science program (VO2Max tests, fitness assess-
ments, etc.), Viking Furniture (Adirondack chairs),
and Handicrafts (yep, using the looms…).
Following are some cool accomplishments from
various student enterprises:
1.Occupancy in The Cottages at Berry up 11%
since student enterprise took over management.
2.A new cheese processing partnership is under
development with Udder Cool Dairy in Roopville,
Georgia. The Berry Farms Jersey Milk enterprise has
already partnered with them to sell raw milk and
Queso Blanco cheese (using exclusively Berry milk)
is being marketed under the Udder Cool brand.
Berry branded cheese is anticipated soon.
3.Viking Cycle Works is the newest addition to
the student operated enterprises group, initial offer-
ings are maintenance and repair packages.
4.Berry Nonprofit Strategic Services is already
involved in a couple of high profile community proj-
ects. Their goal is to provide free business planning
and strategic planning services to nonprofits in cri-
sis or startup mode.

If you like to write, take photos or use computers for
graphic or Web design, then I have the place for you to
get involved. You’re worried about meeting some new
friends. No worry, student publiations will welcome you
as a staff member on one of our publications.
So, you don’t know what to do now. You’re wonder-
ing how you will spend your free time outside of class or
work. You’re not alone.
What is there to do on campus or in Rome? Where are
the best places to take a date around this area? What is
Mountain Day like and what should I expect during my
first one?
I have the solution. Read our student media, includ-
ing Viking Fusion. Or better yet, become a staff member
of one of our studentmedia. We have three award-win-
ning publications awaiting your arrival as a reader or a
staff member.
And best of all--most student publications are FREE!
All of our publications are designed and created for
you--the students. If you don’t like what you see, let us
know. We’ll likely try to put you to work on one of our
publications since we appreciate and seek diverse view-
points. All of our publications are student-managed and
produced.
If you are interested in working for the literary mag-
azine, newspaper or yearbook, please come to our first
staff meeting. We expect no prior experience and will be
happy to train you. Students of all majors are desired.
Whether you’re a communications major, English
major, government major or an animal science major, we
can always use your help, so don’t feel like the student
publications are strictly for communications students,
they are not. Once you join our team as a reader or pub-
lication staff member, you will find a family of caring
and creative fellow students. We welcome you with open

As the fall semester begins,
college campuses will be chaotic
as returning students move back into
their day-to-day grind. Also, for some,
breaking away from the long held par-
ent’s grip for the first time into the jour-

One obstacle we have heard about (or
have faced) is the unforgiving “freshman
fifteen,” the weight one may gain while
attending their first undergraduate

1. Don’t go out to eat for all meals
because dinning hall food isn’t satisfactory.
2. Don’t drink like a fish. Binge drink-
ing can lead to excess calories and late night
meal runs to McDonald's or Taco Bell.
3. Don’t keep junk food close at hand.
Buying healthy food such as bananas, apples
or nutrigrain bars can be an option for break-
fast on the way to class.
4. Do stay busy, but not so busy that
you miss meals.
5. Do eat small snacks between classes if
you feel your stomach start to growl.

Club Viking, funded solely by
the Kappa Gamma chapter of Phi
Mu Alpha, one of Berry’s profes-
sional music fraternties, gives
students a place to go once every
month to dance the night away.
Gabe Steinmeyer, a Phi Mu
Alpha member, said he and a
few other people in the fraternity
started the club to help with the

in Rome.
“Club Viking is a new dance
club concept where college stu-
dents, primarily from Berry,
could go to hang out, dance and
socialize,” Steinmeyer said. “With
the closing of Peach Palace, we
decided that Rome needed a place
for students to go that didn’t have
all the ‘creepy people’ that seem to
plague the off-campus locations.”

Berry introduces first rowing coach

For the first time since the team’s founding more than
thirty years ago, the Viking Crew team will have a coach.
Laura Chappell graduated from Berry in May of 2008
with a major in economics. She will be serving as the coach
for Viking Crew and the Darlington School’s team while
pursuing her M.B.A. (a two-year program) at Berry. Chap-
pell was a member of Viking Crew for all four years during
her Berry tenure and was a club officer.
Since her graduation in 2008, Chappell has worked with
Walton Communities, a company that supports apartment
homes around the metro-Atlanta area.
Chappell said she found the opening online, applied
with a resumé and cover letter, and went through an
interview.
“I was skeptical because Berry never had a crew coach
before,” Chappell said.
Junior Andrew Williams, the president of Viking Crew,
said he found out about the new addition in mid-June and
that Chappell would be relatively hands-off during crew
camp.
Viking Crew started their annual, week-long training
camp on Monday. Team members who wish to move up to
a higher level of competition on the team or maintain their
high standing are required to go through the camp, which
includes two rows and two runs throughout the course of
the day.
Although rowing is not a varsity sport, Chappell is con-
sidered a graduate assistant and is being compensated for
her time with both teams.
Senior Mark Furst, who has been rowing since fresh-
man year, was co-president of the club during the 2009-
2010 school year and said he was disappointed that he was
not included in the process of selecting a coach.
“It’s kind of disappointing because Conrad and I
approached [administration] about it before and when
it happened, we didn’t have a part in the process,” Furst
said.
“We share a boathouse and the founder of the Darling-
ton crew was a Berry alum,” Furst said. “It worked out.
I’m interested to see what she does.”
Chappell said she will have her Level One coaching cer-
tification on Saturday, in time for the season. She said her
goals for the team include making the team better known
in the community, teaching the team more techniques with
drills and through the team’s success, encouraging more
funding.
“I’d definitely like to see a few medals, and also grow
the team’s knowledge of how to be competitive,” Chappell
said.
Chappell said she has a notebook with practices and
drills that she intends to use on both teams this season.
Senior Conrad Beckman has also rowed for four years
and was the other co-president last year. He said he thinks
Chappell will have a positive impact on the team.
“We need someone designated ‘in charge.’ The presi-
dent puts in a solid 20 to 30 hours a week and she’ll help
out with a lot of that,” Beckman said.
“All I can judge her by is what she can do for our team,”
Williams said.
Williams said that Chappell will also help shoulder the
responsibility of running a competitive team.
“A lot of changes are going to happen. There shall be

Soccer teams hope to find repeated success in 2010

While the new school year often pro-
vides a sense of optimism for students and
faculty, it can cause a major headache for
sports teams and coaches.
The 2010 Berry College men’s soccer
team is set to begin the year on Sept. 3
against Young Harris with nine new play-
ers, including eight freshman, all while
having lost five key seniors.
Head coach Richard Vardy said he
expects this year’s team to step up and play
well.
“We’re a young, inexperienced group
this year, but we hope to have some play-
ers, especially the upperclassmen, step up
and become leaders on and off the field,”
Vardy said.
The goal going into this season is to get
some respect, Vardy said.  tenure.

factors,” Vardy said.  “We hope this season
is similar to last – a lot of close, very com-
petitive games. It takes a while to discover
a team’s identity.”
Vardy said he would be happy with a
season similar to last.
Last season’s record of 12-2-4 is one

still had big games.
“We still play Shorter and Lee, which
are both really big, fun games,” Bergmann
said. “But we still had a great season. The
team was probably the best I’ve ever played
for.”

“The leadership of last year’s team was
excellent,” Canalis said. “I hope the three
captains step up and set the tone for the
team.”
The Lady Vikings also begin their
season Sept. 3. They will be traveling to
Sewanee, Tenn. to take on The University
of the South.

hard. We’re a proud team.”
Canalis said the team’s goal is to take

“We just have to play every game. Take
each game one at a time,” Canalis said.
“We have set competitive goals as well as
character goals. We have to set the image
we want to have set for ourselves.”
“If we can take every game seriously to
prove ourselves as a team and come out
with a lot of wins, we can continue to prove
our program to all the new schools,” Shaw
said.
The Lady Vikings first game is set
for Saturday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. against
Emmanuel College.

This June, Mickey Seward returned to a familiar posi-
tion at Berry: working in the Sports Information Office.
This time around his office has moved from Richards Gym
to the Cage Center. From 2003-2006, Seward served as Ber-

Q: What are some of your favorite memories during
your first stint in the Sports Information Department at
Berry?
A: We started volleyball in 2003. First couple of years
we played over in Richards Gym for volleyball. Little, little
bitty facility. The fans were right on top of you, and it was
really loud in there. It was a lot of fun. They moved over
to Ford Gym before my last year before moving over to
here at the Cage Center a couple of years ago.
The week I was supposed to start working here [in 2003]
was the week we were getting married at Barnwell Chapel,
so we actually got them to let me start a couple weeks later
so that we could get married and have a honeymoon.
Q: What were some of the relationships that you formed
during 2003-2006 at Berry in the athletic departments?
A: Todd Brooks…I’ve worked for probably five or six
athletic directors, mostly at the Division I level, and Todd
Brooks is by far the best athletic director I’ve ever worked
for. He is a guy who cares a lot about the people who work
for him. He is a guy who is working everyday to make the
athletics department even better than it already is, and it’s
one of the best in the nation at this level.
Coach Beasley is one of [my] favorite coaches I’ve ever
worked with. He’s just a great guy. He’s a very hard-
nosed coach with a very soft heart. Just a great guy and
really funny.
Q: What factors played a role in your return to Berry?
A: Scott Dunford, who had this position the last four
years, is a good friend of mine. In fact he was one of my
student assistants when I was here before. He actually
encouraged me to apply for this job.
I always knew if I had an opportunity to come back to
Berry that’s the only place I would leave Young Harris to
go to. Never did I think that opportunity was going to

since you were last here in 2006?
A: [There is now] the ability to follow games online…to
follow the stats while the games are going on.

supplement a student’s academic experience.
“There is general agreement that at about 16 hours,
students reach a threshold where if they work more than
that, they endanger their academics,” Waters said.
Exceptions to the 16-hour maximum will be made
based on a student or department’s specific need. Work
positions that have more hours built into the expecta-
tions, such as upper level jobs, will also be permitted to
work 20 hours each week Waters said.
Waters said the limit to student work has caused mis-
conceptions to form that budget cuts have been made in
the student work program.
“What we always have to do is work to control stu-
dent wages within a predetermined budget that is part of
the total college budget,” Waters said. “We have not cut
back on the commitment to budgeting student work.”
College President Stephen R. Briggs said students
would end up financially benefiting from the limit.
“It’s good for students for the college to be economi-
cally efficient, because if we aren’t, it can increase tuition
cost for every student,” Briggs said. “We want everyone
to understand that we’re not holding back money from
students; we’re just trying to spend that money in a way
that’s fair to everybody.”
“We’re going to let people know how we define
meaningful, and we’re coming up with what the core
values of the work program are,” Burnes said. “[The
organizational charts] show that these are the core val-
ues, this is meaningful work and this is how you move
through the system.”
One way that student work is hoping to increase effi-
ciency, both financially and in student and department
outcomes, is through the implementation of organiza-
tional charts. Throughout the summer, charts have been
created for each department on campus. These charts
show the student positions of that particular department
or program, the number of hours per week the students
in the position will work, the number of students who
will work the job and, from that, accurate approxima-
tions of how much money will be spent in an academic
year for that particular position. Also included is a
description of a developmental path to progress from
one level to the next.
Burnes who will no longer act as the director of the
Bonner Scholars Program in order to focus more on
student work, said the organizational charts will fulfill
student work’s goal of improving communication with
students and departments.
According to Burnes, for a job to be a meaningful work
experience, it must fulfill one of the following require-
ments: provide a service to the college, reduce costs,
bring in revenue or have value to the student.
Randall Goble, director of the Cage Center, said
the idea of meaningful work extends to every job on
campus.
“Every job on campus is meaningful to the extent of
that position,” Goble said. “They’re there for a reason.”
According to Briggs, there are currently 1,600 jobs on
campus. The student work budget has increased from
approximately $2.5 million in 2004 to about $5 million
last year due to increased minimum wage and the imple-
mentation of incremental work levels two years ago.
Burnes said the number of jobs on campus show how
important the student work program is at Berry.
“People are really beginning to understand that the
work program is now truly central to a Berry student’s
education,” Burnes said. “It’s not just a nice thing we do
for students to make some money.”
Despite the record-size incoming freshman class,
both Burnes and Waters said every student would still be
guaranteed a job on campus if they chose to have one.
