20. Show ( in terms of electron configurations of the atoms involved and the ions
formed) how the following pairs of elements form ionic compounds.Deduce the
formulae of the compounds formed.
a)Potassium and fluorine - KF
K(2,8,8,1) F(2,7)
K(2,8,8) F(2,8)
b)Calcium and Bromide - CaBr2
Ca(2,8,8,2) Br(2,8,18,7)
Ca(2,8,8) Br(2,8,18,8)
c)Sodium and Oxygen - Na2O
Na(2,8,1) O(2,6)
2 Na(2,8,1) O(2, 8)
d)Magnesium and Oxygen - MgO
Mg(2,8,2) O(2,6)
Mg(2,8) O(2,8)
21.Explain why:
a. Potassium bromide is KBr and not K2Br or KBr2
They cancel out each other because potassium has a valence of -1 and bromine has
a valence of +1
a. Barium chloride is BaCl2 Ba2Cl or BaCl3
Barium has a valence of -2 whereas chloride has a valence of +1. Barium Chloride is BCl2 as
the charge of barium has to negate the charge of chlorine has to be -2 to neutralise the
charge of barium which is positive 2. This is why there is 2 chlorine ions for each barium ion.
23.
