The opinion about the fault zone is referred to the survey report Multipurpose Dam
Construction Project (1985) by Japan International Cooperation Agency
A. Outline
Usually, geological survey is narrowed down from wide area survey to point survey. After
reviewing existing reports and data, then wide area survey is conducted and through satellite or
aerial photograph general geological condition of the site is comprehended.
As a following step, field geological survey is carried out and with simple tools such as a
geologic hammer and compass, physical eyes we can check general geological condition. The
next step is geophysical prospection, which can correspond to X-ray or CT scan in hospital and
generally elastic wave exploration and electricity resistivity exploration are followed.
For the last step, boring, a concept of point survey will be conducted. This is the final review
of all pre-conducted surveys to confirm all the conclusions of the survey process, which can be
compared to endoscopy in hospital.
The geological survey conducted in 1985 is considered that they would have followed above
steps because these steps are general geological survey steps. According to the above report, the
Karian dam site has clear 3 fault lines along the riverbed and a fault toward NE-SW is
developing through Ciberang river. Also later in the process of project, examining and planning a
measure for the fault zone will be consistently paid attention by officials.
Therefore, after reviewing geological survey, field geological survey was conducted at the
expected location for Karian dam. The followings are our opinions.
- If the fault zone could be found from aerial photograph, they should have found the evidence
from the field geological survey but they did not mention about it. According to the recent field
geological survey, the outcrop of the bedrock barely has weathered rock and weathering zone of
tuff and the rock floor was almost the same. Therefore there was no sign of fault.
- Even in the elastic wave exploration conducted afterwards, there was no mention about siding
design to examine fault zone. Also in explaining map there was no sign of clear fault, in the
same way in the boring survey which is conducted afterwards.
- The terms well-defined or confirmed were used in description of fault zone in the report,
meanwhile the term assumed was used in the blueprint(fig c-2, c-36), which makes us to think
that this fault zone is just assumed.
- According to the geology part for Cilawang Dam in the same report, it is described that fault is
not found, but according to the geological map of fig 3-1(f-1), fault zone clearly appears which
is at right angles to the dam.
2. Field geological survey
A. Geology distribution
In this area there are the alluvial of holocene, terrace deposit of pleistocene, tuffaceous
sedimentary rock of pliocene to miocene, and southern volcanos of miocene. They are mainly
composed of fine to coarse tuffaceous sediment and pumice tuff with interbedding of lapilli tuffs,
which belong to the Genteng Formation of pliocene in the inundation area.
- It says fault develops clearly through Ciberang River, it can be assumed that one of the
reasons of creating river and making it deep was fault. Also the boundary surface
between the broken stratum and the remaining stratum could not be evident because
many years have passed. However, broken stratums underground bedrock had been
crushed and softened so it might have been different from remaining stratum, which can
be used for assuming that there were fault activities.
To clarify this, we are going to do 6 borings at each 50m spot from where the rivers left and
right topography slope is rapidly changing, which is assumed to be the boundary between the
fallen stratum and the remaining stratum, and will examine the condition of bed rock and joint
orientation. (See picture2 boring survey planning in Karian dam area)
3. Drilling
The drilling was conducted in surrounding area of the river which is considered to be the
stratum distant from fault, and for BH2,5,6 drilling was carried out on the right and left of dam
site that is considered to be the remained stratum.
BH6 also has the purpose to estimate the ground water level of the tunnel under the condition for
the design certificate.
In around the river, a vertical drill and the opposite direction of inclined drill was planned in
order to cross with the estimated fault plane, and we also placed an emphasis on identifying the
lower part of stratum of the river. (See table 1)
The rock that is distributed in this surveyed area, regardless of its rock type or with or without
fault activity, is found that overall degree of weathering is very severe or it has widely
distributed less lithificated stratum of clastic sedimentary by volcanic activity. Also the survey
showed that the foundation ground was formed with weathered rock or weathered an aluvium
that only has form of rock.
Core recovery of the rock including weathered rock slightly exceeds 10%, except the bottom
15m of BH-1(the lower ground of the river, 45 degree slope drill) and BH-2(bored on the left
side of the Mountain crest), and the core recovery of the rock that has more rock strength than
soft rock is only less than 5%.
It is considered that the core recovery on the drill log as a result of drilling that is written on
1985 and 2006 report, does not only include the rock core but also all the numbers collected
from weathered rock that is almost like soil that is drilled not using drilling water.
Comparing the survey result to the original direction, the core recovery of the rock in the lower
stratum of the river that was confirmed by inclined boring was expected to be low, but no clear
difference was found.

4. Conclusion
A. This survey was conducted to identify the existence of the fault zone that is one of the
technical issues by the conditions for the Design Certificate.
B. In the report Multipurpose Dam Construction Project(1985) by Japan International
Cooperation Agency, it was referred to that fault was developed in parallel to the flow of the
river, therefore, the survey direction was set up supposing that the river area is where the
upper half of normal fault has fallen, thus, fallen stratum might be more crushed and softened
than the remaining stratum.
C. For BH-1 and BH-4 drilling that were drilled around the river, inclined boring was carried out
with an angle of 45 degrees to confirm fault plane if obtained data from the foundation
ground of the bottom of the river and the fault planes slope is the same with the left and right
slope. In addition, we tried to get fault clay mineral which is the feature of fault plane.
D. BH-1, 3, 4 borings were constructed around the river that is supposed to be the fallen stratum
of the fault, and BH-2, 5, 6 borings were constructed on both side of the stratum that is
supposed to be the remained stratum of the fault.
E. The out crops which were found from surface geological survey are all weathered rock or
weathered and sedentary soil of bed rock that only has a form of rock. Thus, even though
there is fault plane, visual identification is nearly impossible because of weathering and
erosion.
F. We tried to find fault plane and the evidence existing in fault plane by inclined boring from
the result of drilling, however, we could not confirm fault plane given that the stratum in deep
underground is an unconsolidated stratum or highly weathered stratum.
G. As a result of core logging, it is considered that the discontinuity in this stratum such as
bedding and joint was only impacted by solidification without any big external force in the
sedimentary environment of the time. No sign of magmatic injection or serious diastrophism
shows low possibility of fault occurrence.
H. The surrounding area of the river was found that in sedimentation stage the soft part of the
upper was cut little by little by streams of river, and sediments of river such as sand and
gravel are deposited in 5-10m thickness and foundation ground above soft rock is distributed
under about 20m vertical depth.
I. Overall, left side of the foundation ground appeared to be somewhat better than the right side,
and on the right side softer foundation ground is distributed than the left side and it gets better
towards the deep part.
J. The stratum that rock core is not formed is unconsolidated stratum which is estimated to be N
value 10-30 by standard penetration test in every boring. hard and soft are distributed by turn
and does not show any particular tendency, therefore, it is considered that this is also caused
by the composition and density of the time of sedimentation.
K. As mentioned in the introduction, the referral of fault zone at the planned dam site is
questionable, and the stratum distributed in this area was found as unconsolidated or severely
weathered stratum, not only with drilling survey but also on the ground surface not an
appropriate condition to find characteristics and evidences in fault as slickenside, fault breccia
and fault gouge. Therefore, since we could not confirm the distribution of a particular
fragmentation of stratum in fallen stratum that is taken into account when planning the
drilling survey or fault plane caused by fault activity, we cannot say there was a fault activity
in dam site.
L. Thus, it is considered that there is no need to take any special measures concerning a fault or
an active fault, it is recommended to install measuring tools such as piezometer and
inclinometer during the construction, monitoring ground displacement in a long-term, and
continuously paying heed to and observing as measures.
