Demographics

The 2001 Census lists a population of 621, though the 2007 estimate is slightly smaller,
hovering just under 600. The population on the two inhabited islands generally is split
between the ethnic Europeans on West Island (est. pop. 120) and the ethnic Cocos Malays
on Home Island (est. pop. 500). A Cocos dialect of Malay and English are the main
languages spoken. Eighty percent of Cocos Islanders are Sunni Muslim.

Education

Education services are provided on Cocos (Keeling) Islands by the Education Department
of Western Australia. There are two campuses, one on Home Island and the other on West
Island. Pre-primary to Year 10 classes are provided. The schools offer a vigorous
bilingual program in both Cocos Malay and English.

Education

There are two schools in the archipelago. They are on the two inhabited islands. One is
on West Island, and the other on Home Island.

School instruction is in English, and efforts are made to discourage students from
speaking the local language (Cocos Islands Malay, a Malay dialect) on school premises.
