ASSIGNMENTS
PART– A
1. Decision criterion under situation of uncertainty is governed by the attitude of the decision maker?
Explain.

2. Solve the LPP Max Z = 40 x + 35 y

Subject to: 2x + 3y  60.
4x + 3y  96
4x + 3.5y  105
x, y 0
3. A wholesale company has three warehouses from which supplies are drawn for four retail Customers
Company deals in single product the supplies of which at each warehouse are:

Warehouse Supply (units) Customer no Demand (units)

1 20 1 15
2 28 2 19
3 17 3 13
4 18
Conveniently, total supply at the warehouse is equal to total demand from the customers. The following
table gives the transportation costs per unit shipment from each warehouse to each customer.
Warehouse Customer
1 2 3 4
1 3 6 8 5
2 6 1 2 5
3 7 8 3 9

Determine what supplies to dispatch from each of the warehouse to each customer so as minimizes
overall transportation cost. Test for optimality also.

4. A physician purchases a particular vaccine on Monday each week. The vaccine must be used within
the following week, otherwise become worthless. The vaccine cost Rs 30 per dose & the physician
charges Rs 50 per dose. In the past 50 weeks the physician has administered the vaccine in the
following quantities.

Doses per week 20 30 50 60

No. of week 5 15 20 10
Determine how many doses the physician buys every week.

5. Give the various sequencing models that are available for solving the sequencing problems? Give
suitable examples?

PART– B
1. Suggest optimum solution to the following Assignment problem and also the maximum sales:

Salesman Markets (sales in lacs)

A 44 80 52 60
B 60 56 40 72
C 36 60 48 48
D 52 765 36 40

2. Draw the project network and trace all possible paths from it. What is the expected project length?

Activity 1-2 1-3 1-4 2-5 3-5 4-6 5-6 6-7 5-7

Pessimistic 7 7 8 1 9 8 14 10 11

3. Customer arrives at one window drive in bank according to a Poisson distribution with mean 10 per hrs.
Service time per customer is exponential with mean 5 minutes. The space in front of the window, including that
for the services car can accommodate maximum of three cars will have to wait outside this space- a) what is the
probability that an arriving customer can drive directly to the space in the front of the window b) find out how
long the customer has to wait before starting service. c) What is the average queue length? d) What is the
average no. of customers in the system.

4. The maintenance cost & resale value per year of machine whose purchase price is rs 7000 is given below:

Yr 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Maint cost 900 1200 1600 2100 2800 3700 4700 5900

2. A company manufactures two products A & B both the product passés through two machines M1 & M2. The
time required to process each unit of products A & B on each machine & available capacity of each machine is
given below.

Product M1 (time per units) M2 (time per unitts)

A 6 2
B 4 4
Available 3600 2000
Capacity (hrs)

The profits on product A and B are Rs. 100 and Rs. 150 respectively. Solve the problem graphically to get the
optimal solution.

3. Find the sequence that minimizes the total time in hrs required to complete the following tasks? What is total
elapsed time? Also determine the idle time for the three machines.

data is known.

Product Full Partial Minimal

Good 8 70 50
Fair 50 45 40
Poor -25 -10 0

Determine the optimal decision under each of the following decision criteria and show how you arrived at it.
a) Maximax b) Maximin c) Laplace d) Minimax regret.

CASE STUDY-2

RM (Mudland) Limited has recently installed new machinery but has not yet decided on the appropriate number
of a certain spare part required for repairs.

Spare parts costs Rs. 2000 each but are only available if ordered now. If the plant failed and there was no spare
part available, the cost to the business of mending the plant rises to 15000. The plant has an estimated life of
ten years and the probability distribution of failure during this time, based on the experience with similar plants,
is as follows.

Number of failure over ten years period Probability

0 .1
1 .4
2 .3
3 .1
4 .1
5 and over Nil

(For the purpose of this question, ignore any discounting for time value of money)

You are required to calculate:

a) The expected number of failures in the ten year periods
b) The optimal number of spares that should be purchased now: (Include in your working a table to show the
cost of alternative ordering policies and failures.
c) The cost now of the ordering policy chosen
d) The value of perfect information of the number of failure in the ten year life.
