Model Question Paper - I
First Semester
MCESE- 102 ADVANCED DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES
(Regular 2011 Admissions)
Time : Three Hours Maximum : 100 marks
1 (a) Explain clearly the concept of strip method analysis of slabs. (5 marks)
(b) Explain the yield line analysis and sketch the yield line pattern for a rectangular
slab with
(i) All sided simply supported condition;
(ii) (ii) Two sided simply supported and two sides fixed condition (5 marks)
(c) Design a reinforced rectangular grid floor of a conference room 12 m. x 16 m. with
the centre to centere spacing of ribs at 2 m. both ways. Assume the slab thickness is
approximately 1/20th of span, total load including self-weight is 6.5 kN/m 2.Use M-20
grade concrete and Fe-415 steel. Assume the grid floor is simply supported on all the four
sides. Also sketch the reinforcement details. (15 marks)
OR
3 (a) Explain with figure the Rankines theory to determine the lateral pressure on the
walls of bunker. (5 marks)
(b) Design a coal bunker of square shape with 2.5 m. sides to store 300 kN of coal
having a unit weight of 9 kN/m3. Assume that angle of response of coal is 30 0 and the top
surface of retained coal is level. Sketch the reinforcement of sidewalls and hopper bottom
of bunker. (20 marks)
OR
4 (a) Design and sketch the reinforcements of slab, beam and column of the Portal frame
of a hall 12 m. wide. The Portal frames are spaced at 3 m. interval with its base fixed.
Heightof frame from base to the centre of beam is 5 m. Take thickness of slab as 100 mm.
Live load on slab is 2 kN/m2.. (20 marks)
(b) Write down the salient points to be noted in the detailing of reinforcement for Portal
frames. (5 marks)
[P.T.O]
5. (a)Explain the classifications of shear wall. (10 marks)
(b) Design a shear wall of length 4.16m and thickness 250mm subject to the following
forces. Assume fck = 25 and fy = 415 N/mm2 and the wall is a high wall with the following
loadings:
2T 16
4160
3780
2T 16
760
250
250
380 380
(15 marks)
OR
6. (a) Explain the design procedure for continuous deep beams. (5 marks)
(b)Design a single span deep beam for effective span of 6m, overall depth of 6m. Width
of supports is 600mm. Total load on beam including self weight is 400 kN/m. Sketch
the reinforcement details. (20 marks)
OR
8. A flat slab floor has panels of 6.6 x 5.4m in X and Y directions between centers of
columns which are 450x 450mm in size. It has an edge beam all around the periphery
of 250 x 500mm which carries an exterior wall of weight 6kN/m. The slab thickness
is 150mm and the characteristic live load it has to carry is 5.25 kN/m 2. The height of
each storey is 3m.
(i)Analyse exterior frame in 6.6m direction and determine the distribution of moments.
(ii) Determine the maximum torsional moment produced in the edge beam.
(iii) Check whether the moment can be transferred to column without transferring it on
edge beam. (25 marks)
