Module 1: (10 hrs)


Introduction to nanophotonics, Photons and electrons: similarities and differences, Free-Space Propagation,
Confinement of photons and electrons, Propagation through a classically forbidden zone: tunneling,
Localization under a periodic potential: bandgap, Cooperative effects for photons and electrons.

Module 2: (8 hrs)
Axial nanoscopic localization, Evanescent wave, Surface plasmon resonance, Lateral nanoscopic localization,
Near-field optics, Near-field microscopy, Examples of near field studies.

Module 3: (12 hrs)


Quantum-confined materials, Quantum wells, Quantum wires, Quantum dots, Manifestations of quantum
confinement, Optical properties, Nonlinear optical properties, Quantum-confined stark effect, Dielectric
confinement effect, Superlattices, Plasmonics, Metallic Nanoparticles and Nanorods, Metallic nanoshells, Local
field enhancement, Plasmonic wave guiding, Applications of metallic nanostructures.

Module 4: (12 hrs)


Photonic crystals: Basic Concepts, Theoretical modeling of photonic crystals, Features of photonic crystals,
Methods of fabrication. Nanolithography: Two-Photon Lithography, Near-Field Lithography, Near-Field Phase-
Mask Soft Lithography, Plasmon Printing. Nanocomposites as Photonic Media. Biomaterials and
Nanophotonics. Nanophotonics for Biotechnology and Nanomedicine.
