Q3 Two cylinders P and Q rest in a channel as shown [16]

has diameter of 180 mm and weighs 500 N. If the
bottom width of the box is 180 mm, with one
side vertical and the other inclined at 60,
determine the pressures at all the four points of
contact.

Q4 a) An inclined plane as shown in figure 4a. is used [8]
to unload slowly a body weighing 400 N from a
truck 1.2 m high into the ground. The coefficient
of friction between the underside of the body and
the plank is 0.3. State whether it is necessary to

from sliding down. What minimum force is

Q5 a) Determine the position of center of gravity of

Q6 a) A bar of length 1000 mm and diameter 30 mm is centrally bored for length 400 mm, [8]
the bore diameter being 10 mm as shown in figure 6a. Under a load of 30 kN, if the
extension of the bar is 0.222 mm, what is the modulus of elasticity of the bar?

Q7 An overhanging beam ABC, such that span AB = 6 m & overhang BC = 2 m carries
a udl of 12 KN/m over entire span ABC and one point loads 10 kN at the free end C
(figure 7). Find out reactions at the support, write equations of SF and BM for
section AB and BC, and draw SF diagram and BM diagram for the beam & calculate
the point of contra flexure if any.

Q8 a) A jet plane travel s along a vertical parabolic path


defined by the equation y = 0.4x 2. At point A, the
jet has a speed of 200 m/s, which is increasing at
the rate of 0.8 m/s2. Determine the magnitude of
the planes acceleration when it is at point A.

b) A body is moving in a straight line with uniform acceleration at an initial velocity of 12 m/s,
after 5 s its velocity is 20 m/s. Determine i) its acceleration, ii) the distance travelled in this
time and iii) the time taken to travel a distance of 200 m. [8]
