Faculty Senate Statement

(Unanimously Passed by the Faculty Senate, May 15, 2017)

We, members of the faculty, through the forum of the Adelphi University
Faculty Senate would like to address the issue of the Adelphi University Mens
Lacrosse Teams use of Donald Trumps speech from the Republican National
Convention as they came out onto the playing field for a game.

We recognize the students right to free speech, but during an inter-collegiate

sporting event, our teams represent the university as a whole. As such, we are
concerned that this act, approved by the Coach and Athletic Director, can be
perceived as an Adelphi University endorsement of a particular politician and
their entire platform. The actions demonstrated by the Adelphi University
Mens Lacrosse Team is not an accurate representation of the diversity of
political beliefs on our campus. We urge the Administration to address the
issue through the development of policies so that this will not occur in the
future.
